NBN Discussion

At 500m you should get better than 64/22.
How many phone outlets in your house?

And if they had incorrectly put you on a 25/5 plan then sync should have been exactly 28000/6400.

I don't think that's right. My modem has always synced at something like 135/52 since day 1 (I am only 150m or so from the node), but I initially started on a 25/5 plan before upgrading to a 100/40 (and my real-life speeds have reflected those plans).

Most modems will show a Max sync and Actual Sync.

For actual sync
50/20 - 55.0/22.6
25/5 - 28.0/6.4

A few posts up thread mention a Customer Service Guarantee and compensation when things go wrong. Is this something specific to your agreement with the ISP or something that everyone is entitled to with NBN?

With our ADSL2 it seems specific to the ISP. Through takeovers we have ended up with IINet and the compensation is woeful and they are very keen to avoid payment. Yet to do the required reading for when we get NBN

Today I overheard a colleague talking to his ISP about getting the NBN.He was obviously told they couldn't give him a date for connection. He then said that's good as I have received a few better offers. His next statement-So you are now guaranteeing tomorrow morning.

NBN is coming to our street fairly soon. I plan to keep my iPad so it runs on TELSTRA 4G just in case they bugger it up like at Sydney,Crawley and East Victoria Park. I hope they are learning from their mistakes before they get to our place.

Well mother finally has a phone. The company she was with went belly up in the week before Christmas and it has taken till Tuesday last week to get a new one. She had to get the NBN so that took several weeks initially, then something was wrong and they were going to come back....another few weeks, then the wait for Telstra (who she wanted) to come to do the connection. People tried everything to try to get it on sooner - Telco Ombudsman was contacted, local MP, Legatee, Vet Affairs....and so on. Telstra was like a brick wall. Looked at alternative suppliers and that was going to be another 6 weeks. I remember a time when people who had an urgent need were connected quickly. Obviously those days are well gone. Anyway, she is happy now.

So is the phone a landline connected via the NBN or through the old phone network (not clear from your description)

Had a call from Vodafone (my mobile provider) offering me NBN unlimited (don't know what speed) +a 4g backup for $60 a month. Unfortunately still have 18 months of contract to run on ADSL - speed currently 10 mbps.

Her phone is a landline through NBN as she was not able to have the old phone network and had to get NBN connected. She had a mobile while she was without the phone but it created all sorts of problems for her, for example she used to turn the volume down without realising and then not be able to hear it if anyone rang and the numbers were too small for her to manage. We looked at a KISA but she needs to be able to ring many more than the maximum numbers it provides so it wasn't going to work. My brother did most of the organising so we tried not to get involved.

And if power blackout?

Stuff only knows! The really bizarre thing is that I couldn't reach her on the new number this afternoon but the old one worked! Sister used the new one last week and it was fine.

NBN has a battery backup free of charge for those who need “Priority Assistance”. Otherwise it’s an optional purchase.

Can also use a generic UPS

Some weird things happening with the NBN. But NBNCo and politicians keep saying how it’s fantastic

I hope I have the correct units here.
We are having ongoing problems with our Naked DSL connection. Last weekend our download speed bottomed out at 0.5Mbps; we couldn't download anything or make a call on our VoIP phone. I rang our provider, not Telstra but it is big and has been recently taken over, who did something and our speed shop up to a whopping 5.3. Since then it has slowly dropped back to 2.5, which is pretty useless. The best we have ever got is 8.2.
We can see Perth city across the river from the end of our street but cannot use any mobile provider except Telstra as we are in some sort of black hole.
NBN has now come to our street and we are wondering if we should change over to NBN and a new provider. Our thoughts are to change to Telstra, a 1000 Gb download plan for $79 with a (waived) connection fee of $99. Promised speed is up to 40Mbps.
I have a few concerns.
Can we keep the VoIP phone connection and the number?
What is the minimum speed if 40 is the promised maximum?
What email would come with a Telstra plan?
What will happen to our emails which come through our current provider?
Has anyone been in a similar position to us?
