I'm on a 100/40 plan and wouldn't mind moving to a 250 plan. But why on earth the uplink is only 25 is ridiculous. At least make it no less then the plan below it.

Its because most people only want the downloads - and they prefer the cheaper plans
Aussiebroadband sells "Ultrafast" which is 500-1000 up and 50 down $149/m
Superloop sells 200/200 $209/m

Just look at the CVC graphs. The uploads run at less than 10% of the downloads.

Exactly. There is plenty of upload capacity. So sell it to customers for a reasonable rate.

This is what Superloop shows for my POI (Aussie has a very similar graph). My understanding was it they had a capacity restraint for both. So you're saying real utilisation should be the sum of those two and that the sum can't exceed 100%?


Looks like upload utilisation barely hits 5%. Seems like plenty of scope to offer more generous upload bandwidth without having to got for a 1000Mbps plan, which is not currently offered for HFC.

I would have thought either make the 250 plan have at least 40Mbps upload or at the very least, offer a second 250 plan with an uplink of more than 25Mbps. Bit like they have a 100/20 plan and for about $10/month more you can have a 100/40 plan.

Followup. After Telstra stupidity in only allowing one phone line per NBN connection (as above), our home phone was transferred to a VOIP SIP connection today though these people.

CVC is symmetric, however there are technology constraints around HFC upload rates. Just like with FTTC using asymmetric modulation which favours downstream rates, HFC also has asymmetric upload constraints as part of the DOCSIS standard: DOCSIS - Wikipedia

FTTP does not have these constraints.

Not necessarily. Reminder that NBN wholesales the AVC. So NBN is selling 250/25 and not 250/50.
The RSP could buy the ultrafast (500-1000/50) and shape it to 250/50 but they would have to first buy it at the higher wholesale price.
Then there are congestion issues on the HFC network unrelated to CVC which is one of the reasons NBN brought in the lower uploads.

I think NBN wholesales a 250/100 but not a 250/50. It comes down to what the RSP whats to sell it for - if at all.
Sometimes it is worth asking the RSP if they sell an AVC that is not visible on their website.

That was my intended point. To me it seems remiss that NBN don't offer a 250 plan with greater than 25. And if a 250/100 plan exists, do any RSPs offer it?

Sorry, I did mean residential plans. Plus they seem to max out their business offering at 100/40 for HFC.

In FTTP the physical upload capacity is 50% of the download so the upload CVC can never be fully utilised.
Per GPON fibre the bandwidth is 2.4Gbps down and 1.2 Gbps up.
HFC bandwidth is even more constrained in the upload.

The other is the AVC that the RSP are prepared to sell you - for a price.

FTTC but because I have 3 lead in copper pairs. NBN needs to come and cut-in the correct pair

109/44 line speed.
Stable in the rain (would have dropped out if it were ADSL)

Only 27 days after your Dec 31st date - did they actually show up then?

NBN kept cancelling the confirmed dates - 3 cancellations. My RSP Aussiebroadband were great- manually calling me each time NBN cancelled. Each time they called they revealed they had to call several hundred customers. All because of NBN

I actually rang my Federal MP after the 3rd cancellation (never spoke to him, only his offsider - will remember that at the next election) to remind him that his colleague Minister of Comms declared NBN built and fully operational but yet my NBN is not connected.
The next day my RSP rang me to say NBN declared Force Majure apparently because of storms affecting some parts of coastal NSW.
I am never sure if it was the truth as I don't believe anything NBN says.

In any case the 4th appointment date stuck.

AussieBroadband is great - never have to speak to more than one person. Never have to speak to a virtual person like Telstra's Codi.
Took me 1hr 20 min to cancel the Telstra andline accounts. Had to speak with 3 people not including Codi.
I still have Telstra mobiles on the account. But otherwise good riddance Hellstra.

I parked (ported) a landline number over to ABB. Will see what I can do with the current PABX phones.
