I did the bucket list thing and spent 60,000 points to upgrade from J to F MEL to LHR on the A380. Now I travel Y every week on the long haul between MEL and ADL and only do one international trip a year and have only done PE for the past few trips so J was going to be a step up.
And so, on to the flight. I already had F lounge access so no advantage there and also had a slight headache which seemed not to be helped by the widow Cliquot. The MEL-SIN leg was good, I had the tasting menu and all the wines etc and enjoyed the space but I kept wondering whether I had done the right thing. Although everything was faultless I was a little underwhelmed.
In SIN the crew changed (who knew we had so many coughneys in Oz) and I was wondering if the experience would redeem itself. The short answer is yes. If you've never slept on a plane because you are 189cm and weigh over 130kgs then this is for you. I skipped on the PJs - awful colour, J seems better. The bed was great and certainly made a huge difference given my first leg was 36.5 hours door to door. The second leg I fly BA J LHR-JHB and the ended with J on QF JHB-MEL.
I thought that sloping J bed in QF was possibly the least comfortable bed I have ever slept on, but then I remembered the alternatives....So the moral of the story is that F ruins the travel experience in all the other classes. Sometimes ignorance is indeed bliss.
