Yes that's fine the extra miles were only for a 3rd award. You could even fly in F for 72,500 miles (one way to US).

Which airline though ?
Extremely hard to find seats on QF F through AA. I am actually being kind to say extremely hard. More like almost impossible. It's extremely hard even through QF. AA get the seats a couple of weeks later.

Well, that's bad news. So why would people buy AA then, are they good for anywhere?

You can go many places using AA miles on a variety of airlines. It's just that going to the US for 72,500 miles is not (easily) one of them.

I mainly use AA miles to fly EY F to the middle east and also CX J to Asia. Next year I'll give CX F and BA F a try.

AA miles or QF points getting a J seat now to the USA from OZ virtually impossible, what a joke. One can of of course go via HKG on CX.

is it cheaper to do that with Advantage or Alaskan miles?

From memory I remember calculating alaskan would cost around US$4k for two people one way aus-hkg cx J and hkg-USA cx F which would mean that both are around the same under current AA promo versus the usual Alaskan 40% promo

Not always.

Got a seat on QF1 in F last year through AA at T - 2 months... and it wasn't showing on QF's website. A fluke I'm sure... but you never know

Just be aware though redeeming J or F milesAAver awards on AA has virtually dried up.
Until now we have had milesAAver F awards NRT-USA-NRT once or twice a year without a problem. Now milesAAver awards in F on AA are only released 4-7 days out.Anytime awards in F are 170-200000 miles rather than the 62500 miles for the sAAver option.
You still can get partner awards but I think you will see the Americans wise up and those may dry up as well.
The burn rate side of the equation has definitely changed for the worse.

I expressed myself poorly. What I meant was QF F transpacific from SYD/MEL to the USA (or vice versa) were the ones that were almost impossible.
QF F metal to DXB/LHR is a different matter altogether. Its much much easier. I flew earlier this year DXB-MEL at T- two weeks, and then a month later my brother and a mate flew DXB-SYD they booked around a month out from departure. Was a comparative piece of cake.

That said, in the past few months it seems that QF availability to DXB/LHR in F has dried up considerably.

Just a quick heads up on this.
I logged onto one of my accounts which has had purchased miles this year and it showed as eligible to purchase the full 80K plus bonus.
Might be worth having a go if you have an account you want to top up :)

Damn unlucky not the case with me. I tried three of my accounts which have already maxed out and got the following message.
We're sorry! You've reached your annual limit to buy miles. Learn of additional ways toearn miles with the AAdvantage program.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Qantas Cashcard to buy AA points to take advantage of the double points promo from QF too?

This promo has been extended to 2nd Jan 2015 :D

Which means you can purchase again on 2015.

As always the gamble is whether or not this will be the best offer for the year.

At least I don't have to worry about the Dec 2014 offer and have already purchased my miles for this year using this promotion.

A double AA dip what a great idea, now combine this with USDM could be a winner :)

I take it can buy more each calander year not each 12 months?.

AA works in calendar years, so yes it should be possible :)

Agree what a wonderful concept. 250k miles for the price of 160k. Or an F return trip to the Middle East on EY for two pax. Works out to be a touch over A$5,800 at the current exchange rate

Yes mrsdrron and I both bought the max.125000 gets us 2 F NRT-USA or vice versa. So our F return on JAL later this year comes out at just under $6000 all up for the 2 of us.

Well, I've been an Alaskan miles buyer for the past year or so ... but this too good to resist; especially as it looks like I can go again in the New Yyear. My first AA miles buy :)

When did they change the annual limit for buying to 100k?
I went to buy 80+45k for Mum.. for buying anywhere between 80-100k you still get 45k bonus.
Then I logged in to my account (bought 40+40k earlier this year) and it said I wasn't eligible to buy more this year.
Hmmm...
