New Amex statement credits

I would disagree. Those taking advantage of GCs in these promos (and I have often done this in a BIG way) are not likely to be swayed into using the company on a regular basis.

Those companies after a cashflow boost (ie Qantas with their December GC Promo) are probably happy enough, but otherwise the promo is being offered to either:
- Have Amex demonstrate how they can drive custom their way
- Have the store/service tried in the hope of repeat business

While yes I am generalising, the GC pillagers like myself are just taking advantage why we can and are not really valuable unless they need the cashflow injection.

I once bought $50K of GC through DSE just to earn the 575K in points on offer. Did it even slightly influence me to ever go back for any reason apart from other promos? No not in the slightest.

I'm just highlighting that the opportunities for GC pillaging seems to be getting harder. By doing this, they miss out on funds and then don't get any business (including any chance of repeat business).

Again I disagree. GC Pillagers like us use our GCs and so one of the biggest areas for profit in unused cards does not happen, and secondly we do not generate repeat business.. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I will take advantage when and where I can, but I fully understand businesses wanting to limit our raids ;)

What’s the offers for Hilton and Avis?
Didn’t get those two on any of my cards.

I'd love to know what a business makes when someonr purchases $500 Visa gift cards or $300 vPay cards. $5.95 per transaction right and highly unlikely to see that person come back to buy other things.

This little earner was wonderful until everyone and their dog started posting the deal on Ozbargain.

The one I really don't get is JB Hifi.

Throw 2.65% surcharge on AMEX, but let me go buy a bunch of gift cards from Woolies, come in an hour later and buy what I wanted. Wonder what JB lose on the gift card sales at WW et al. 10%? Or is that written off as "marketing"...

Most people don't know or can be bothered buying gift cards from woolworths

I tell some people you can save the amex surcharges by buying giftcards and they look at me like iIhave 2 heads

Even in Woolies I still haven’t had anyone in front nor behind me pay with a Woolies gift card. Same thing at my service station.

It could be argued that even if JB dropped their Amex surcharge, buying GC from Coles/WW is still the better option if you have an Edge due to the better points earn....

But on loses out on any purchase insurance available if they had bought directly using Amex.
