New Amex statement credits

Has anyone else had a charge against their Amex cards when registering on the AMPOL APP offer?
I registered 2 cards on the AMPOL App and each has received a $1 charge to Caltex Gumly Gumly FP

I've not used this offer, but a similar charge does occur when using the BP App.

Charge or just an authorisation (to validate the card)? Usually drops off after a couple of days.

How would Amex differentiate between International and domestic spend? I don’t think they can if it’s all priced in AUD, so I’m assuming that this promo includes International flights as well.

There are a lot of restrictions on this offer according to the t&c. For example;
  • Payments made towards selection of seats, reward seats or charter flights are not eligible for the offer. Flights operated by codeshare partners are not eligible for the offer.
  • Payments for flight upgrades or other flight extras/ancillaries are not valid for the offer.
I suspect that this is just an attempt to get you to do the ''right'' thing. A bit like offers that say no GCs.

Note also that this is a very small offer - only available to 6000 cards.

Agreed. I don’t see how they can distinguish between any of these charges if its all coming from Merchant “Virgin Australia”.

Do VA paid upgrades get billed by VA or plus grade or whoever they use?

Airline Amex transactions actually show the route, name and ticket number on the statement, so it’s quite possible they could in fact distinguish between a flight purchase and something else.

Intriguing. Personally I’ve never seen that.

Reviewing the last 12 months of my Vrigin domestic and International bookings made using my Amex, every transaction appears with Merchant name “Virgin Australia 994010 Winton”.

There is no route, name or transaction cost number anywhere to be seen, even when I click into the transaction go further detail.

QF bookings have all the details - including booking class! I’d never noticed that before on my personal cards. Remember it from Corporate AMEX card days.
