The authorities that delay and get caught by some mind-numbing atrocity are always criticised for the delay, and those that decisively implement change intent on protecting those they risk alienating, are invariably criticised for being stupid ... where does that leave those souls with the burden of thwarting evil and protecting the innocent?

There's always going to be some "square earth" believer that argues change is unnecessary. Perhaps it is, but unlike some others, I'd prefer not to risk my, and my families lives on a hunch.

I assume you mean "flat earth".
I haven't argued that changes are unnecessary. I have argued that these changes make no sense.
For example if the US and the UK are relying on the same intelligence why are the measures they are adopting so different?

Including DXB, AUH & DOH just makes no sense as they are known to have tight security. It's a ploy to disadvantage the ME3 as posted on View from the Wing and One Mile at a Time from competing with the US3. If there was credible intel, why aren't other countries jumping on board? And why aren't EK, EY & QR implementing this on ALL their flights? They don't want to lose a billion $ A380 with all those people on board. I personally feel a lot more secure with laptops, etc being personally inspected in front of the owner than going in the cargo hold, even if it meant having to arrive a couple hours earlier for the flight. And the restriction on cameras is ridiculous, all you have to do is prove the camera works as such and show the inspector the digital preview. The terrorists don't have to do anything. They can sit back in their living rooms and laugh as the innocent public loses more freedom, more productivity and possibly have valuable cameras & laptops damaged or stolen. I just hope this doesn't spread outside the USA and UK.

Blutac and Semtex have different X-ray signatures.:)

Yes, but you still have some minimum wage person staring at the screen.

And when they take away our phones?

Well here's the thing. A phone (iphone 6 plus) has an approx 3000 mAh battery. An ipad 2? 7000 mAh.
So it would only take 3 terrorist to combine their fake iphones to achieve a yield larger than an ipad bomb.

It's a bit like the liquids ban. Has nobody worked out that 10 times 100 mls is equal to 1 litre?

The logic is astonishing. It's political knee-jerk reaction stuff.

What's more. You can't bring on a set a NC headphones, yet you can carry a CPAP machine, no doubt large enough to carry a small nuke.

They are launching the Good Ship Security down the rails with a hull full of holes.

And here's another take on the ban: Electronics Ban Not Declared for Terrorist Threat – FlyerTalk - The world's most popular frequent flyer community

As for IATA's opinion as posted in Onemileatatime... IATA is a commercial organisation looking after the commercial interests of its members.

:o That's the thing I was most afraid of!!!

Are they going to refund my $400 and supply me with some in ear ones instead? (Which I find highly uncomfortable anyway)

I'm sure they will be able to offer you ear plugs! :)

Hard to believe anything in the news today - being 1st April.

Heard Ikea were starting an airline today - fitted out with Ikea flatpack furniture instead of the normal seats for a more comfortable flight........

Agree. But the issue here was poor reporting of facts not a jokey kind of thing.

The WA paper has an ad for Ikea offering amnesty for people to return pencils...

And now back to topic.

OMAAT reports the ban is about to be extended to flights from Europe to USA...

Surely it's only a matter of time now before this is universal, like the LAG ban. No doubt some of the more authoritarian AFF members will be ecstatic at these developments :)
