Actually it is a Passenger Movement Charge and "The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (Customs and Border Protection), on behalf of the Commonwealth, has administrative responsibility to manage the PMC."

"The current rate of the PMC is $55."

More information here: Passenger movement charge (PMC)

Quotes in italics are copied directly from the website above.

No no no no no, the NZ airport based charge which is $25

Was going to mention that one #20!
Would someone with forex skills please do an equal count of total taxes for Aussies going across:
Aud$55.00 is Nzd$xx.xx
Aud$xx.xx is Nzd$16.00
Aud$xx.xx is Nzd$6.00
Aud$xx.xx is Nzd$25.00
And supposedly NZ needs our Aud$ coming into NZ.

It's as good as 1:1 +/- 5%

At least we hope it will be included in airfares.
Compared to going to DPS, a direct narrow flight from ADL though, but in the end, its cheaper to visit DPS than NZ.
Only thing I fear is getting "the point" to go that way, on coming back.
So far on my sojourns to NZ, I have not as yet been picked upon on return to Australia, to go that way, and then get the full "kit and kaboodle".
Came back from SIN once, as an Australian passport holder, and got the full treatment.
Not as bad as a Malaysian passport holder with Australia PR, that one was worst.
Sorry about it, had to post fast this OP.
Would I stop going to NZ, most likely not, but maybe less trips over the pond each year, ...
To earn the most QF SC on QF, that EK flight is the best one, apart from LA which now earns less all round. Unless you can nab a QF flight number on the LA service SYD - AKL which is not all that often.
***Didnt realise it was discussed elsewhere on the AFF website.***

AGAIN with the concern about being checked by customs. Seems to me the only people who should be worried about this are people with something to hide. You got extra scooby snacks you shouldn't have?

Goodness me AP I really don't get it. Yes, customs (or whatever they're called these days) obviously target flights and pax from suspect countries/flights over "vanilla" (or safe) places like NZ, but they also do random checks. I for one am glad for it. Yes, folks with connections or dying to get home can be annoyed at being delayed a bit, but it doesn't take that long (I've been checked returning from europe, US, etc). I'm not concerned one little bit about it. Happy our authorities are doing their jobs (or making an effort anyway :) ).

it always surprises me how I have NEVER been stopped in the USA or UK. No complaints, but the first time it happens, and it surely will happen someday, I'll not complain about it. I've got nothing to worry about so they can check, do swabs etc all they like :D

(I know, not related to the pax charge increase)

Dagnabit I forgot about getting the full box and dice by customs when coming off that big bird 767, except Qantas don't fly them over the ditch, make sure you get the QF codeshare to get those status credits, just that bad 737

Ok, my last trash bag reply.
ADL - AKL direct with NZ gives me 25 SC.
ADL - SYD - AKL with NZ gives me 25 SC in whY.
ADL - SYD - AKL with NZ gives me 100 SC in J.
ADL - SYD - AKL with QF on either JC or EK gives me 120 SC in J, or 160 in F if I play it right with an overnighter in SYD, flying EK F with a QF code.
So you see, its of more advantage of me, to fly over the pond with an EK metal QF coded flight.
NZ is good, but does not earn much, compared to EK & QF.
NZ also does not have a F service.
That ends my lecture.

Pretty sure JAL express doesn't fly Adl-SYD- akl

Not sure who's SC you're earning on NZ. Presumably virgin SC. In which case the lower qualification/re qualification requirements with velocity mean those SC are worth more than the QF SC. To attain platinum 100 VA SC are equivalent to 140SC on Qantas.

I often wonder if Poochie ever actually flies anywhere except on these NZ status runs :)

What does this have to do with the NZ departure/arrival tax?

Re: New Nzd$16 to enter NZ (read ENTRY TAX) and Nzd$6 to exit??? Just read online in

This was announced back in May with the NZ budget speech.

I have merged this thread with the "Travel News" one relating to back.

Note the $25 levy is an 'airport' levy - the airports operator gets this and is split for arrivals and departures, showin as KK on e-tickets that go to that detail.

Here's the levies and charges in AUD on a return fare, SYD-AKL going forward: ([-]~AUD173[/-] ~AUD159)

Thanks serfty. So, does this mean that we now need to pay $173 in taxes on a typical tras-Tasman ticket? That seems awfully high! In fact, I've paid less than that for a return ticket on JQ.

Sorry I accidentally left the airline fuel levy in there ... it's more like ~AU$159 ....

What does this have to do with the NZ departure/arrival tax?

Because AP travels to NZ; is any other reason needed?

Yes, I remember the collection of the departure tax at the airport. What a PITA to check in, then you had to go upstairs(IIRC) at AKL, line up, pay the bloody tax to get a sticker on your BP to prove you'd paid it, then you could go through security. The best thing was moving that collection to the carriers via the ticket price, like most other places do.

I remember doing the same at CHC on my first ever overseas trip. At the time I thought everywhere did that and it reallyu was a PITA. Glad its "gone" ie included in the ticket now. Our flight was a super early one and we had to wait ages for the bank (I think) to open so we could pay.

Costa Rica still does it this way, paying separately.

From what I can tell, the taxes involved in travelling from Australia to New Zealand are between $157 and $160 for a return ticket. By comparison, taxes levied on a return ticket between Australia and the UAE are $141.94, between Australia and Singapore is $144.74. The USA is $193.84.

Of that, $111.84 is charged by Australia (comprising of a $55 departure tax and 2x $28.42 International Passenger Service Charges).
