After a good 2020 (for NZ), the NZ govt/bureaucrats wasted 2021 & now 2022, by being slow in getting vaccination into the country (more than 100th in world roll out ranking) and slow with ordering RAT's. In mid 2020 the jabbing polices were slowed to match the very low supply, then speeded up when more supply become available. But to all the Govts it seems a hard call. Even when it's clearly escaped. They took so much pride in being zero zero zero. Closed borders. We will Protect everyone blah. In SA we had zero cases before we opened - can only imagine the angst. But in WA, and certainly NZ its way beyond that now.
Same with RAT order/supply. Pollies give themselves a pat on the back (in front of a TV) when supply lands. In many other countries people can easily purchase from many retail outlets (but not in Kiwiland)
in the South Island was ~year without a case, yet still had restrictions and events being cancelled. As are events being cancelled now.. The over zealous restrictions (in SI) for a year have worn thin, with far less support now. (when public support is needed)
Covid-19: Shipment of 10 million rapid antigen tests due over weekend
The new shipment, along with tests that arrived in the last two days, will bring the country's stock to 22 million by Monday.

Covid-19 total: Record rise in cases due to backlog in processing - modeller
A Covid-19 modeller says testing and data-processing backlogs are probably behind the record jump in cases.

'Head in the sand': Govt's virus brinkmanship
As case numbers have skyrocketed, the only thing the Government has done is repeal restrictions, accelerating the pace of the outbreak.

Edit
Covid-19 update: 13,606 new community cases today
There have been 13,606 new community cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand today, with 263 people in hospital.

There have been 13,606 new community cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand today, with 263 people in hospital. In a statement, the Ministry of Health said 9262 of the new cases were in the Auckland region. <snip.>
RATs are now used as the primary test at all community testing centres and the Ministry said people who use a RAT will get their results within 20 minutes, which will "help identify cases sooner, reduce testing wait times and minimise disruption to business and ensure critical services and infrastructure workforce can continue operating".
There were also six cases reported in MIQ today.

Another record - 13,606 community cases of Covid; 263 in hospital; 5 in ICU
New Zealand has seen another day of record Covid-19 escalation.
There are 13,606 new community cases of Covid-19 today.
