Next Generation Check In

Quick question on NGCI and exit row, apologies if this has been covered somewhere else.

I am flying SYD-MEL tomorrow on QF421 (with partner) and I did OLCI this morning. We have both been pre-allocated an exit row on the A332. (hurrah)

OLCI will not issue boarding passes and says that I need to go to a bag drop counter to get my boarding pass. Seeing as there are now no bag drop counters in SYD T3, what should I do? Just approach a QF staffmember and present the receipt that was issued instead of the boarding pass? At this stage we are travelling with hand luggage only so we won't need to check in the bags.

I am NB so I can't use the premium desk or check-in at the lounge.

Thanks

It sounds like you don't have a next gen card. So you are going to need a printed boarding pass. I would suggest trying the check in kiosk in SYD. This will still not get you a boarding pass but maybe one of the staff (floor walkers) will be able to override it. :?:

Otherwise you're just going to have to line up at the desk.

I keep forget how much easier the next gen card is with not having to print a boarding pass. I wonder what would happen if someone just fronted to board with the QFF card when in an exit row without having been seen by a staff member.

As others have pointed out you can just approach one of the loitering QF staff members and they will help you out.

For the record if you have a QP membership you can just go through security and into the QP and check-in with the staff at the service desk there. They just have to visually confirm that you're not a cripple and verbally confirm that you're OK sitting in an exit row.

That's what I normally do. :)

Sooo..... I thought Silvers couldn't use the new Premium Service Desks...

BUT - QF website says:

Next Generation Check-in is now available at Perth, Sydney T3 and Melbourne domestic terminals. Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyers with a new Qantas Frequent Flyer card with intelligent Q chip are eligible to use the Premium Service Counter for check-in.

Perhaps they have caved to pressure, though they might need to then re-print all those new airport signs, so seems unlikely.

Just viewed the NGCI video and the FAQ's embedded in it also talk about WP, SG, PS and QP ALL having access to the Premium Service Desk.

(Although the audio in the video only refers to Business pax)

It appears there is another group of citizens that are liking the new check in proceedures domestically-

Someone must be recycling articles. There's nothing new here, and we've had such a debate related to an article of the same kind on this forum before.

Even before NGCI you could achieve the same thing, and since every airline in Australia (except TT? Doubt it...) has OLCI, it was "possible" on any airline.

What an extremely confused story. Confusing e ticketing with no ID checks. Then the AFP association guy also confusing online booking with a lack of ID check. If your ID is checked at the airport then it should make little difference how you get you ticket.

Then there is also the statement that it isn't a risk anyway as all baggage is screened.

Qantas has reportedly spent millions of dollars rolling out its "next generation" self check-in systems in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane - with Canberra and Adelaide to follow - which have reduced the number of check-in staff required.

Simpy untrue regarding the number of check-in staff required. There are more staff than under the old system.

Is there still a dedicated desk for pax with domestic-international connections? Got one out of Brisbane next weekend and I'm guessing they haven't removed human interaction for pax transfering onto an international service after the domestic.

Can you please tell us where they are hiding?

It would seems strange from a business perspective for Qantas to outlay significant capital on a new check in system and then increase overhead to man it.

I guess it depends on the time time of day, I have flown out of Perth 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Not once was there any assistance. All were PER-KGL @ 16h30 hrs.
The first time i just left my bag of dirty clothes on the scales and went on to board my flight (i was late) because it couldn't read the tag. Qantas nicely brought my bags by taxi the next day.

Daniel, it does require human assistance for domestic-international transfers, most especially because a human being has to sight your passport! Go to the Service Desk at BNE Domestic.

I don't normally have luggage on domestic flights and just check in at the lounge so can somebody decipher this for me:

(from MEL T1 description)
Business class check-in is also available via the Check-in Kiosks and from counters 33 and 34.
Qantas Club and oneworld Emerald passengers check-in is available from the Check-in Kiosks and from counters 35 to 36.
Group check-in is located at counters 41 and 42.

Is that implying that emerald members can no longer use the business class check in (33 & 34) and must instead use a separate counter? In practice I thought there was only a premium services counter anyway?

Is this the page you got this info from?: Melbourne Domestic Airport (T1) Guide

I think it might be a bit out of date. Despite the paragraph regarding NGCI at the top of the page there is a note down the bottom saying:

Information is correct as of 30 November 2009.

In addition to this, I was under the impression that Qantas Club members no longer had a priority check-in counter (contrary to what you quoted above).

The Qantas Club reference also threw me - but of course you're right just outdated material. How unlike Qantas to have outdated references on the website!

Ok I thought I'd give NGCI a whirl today as I wasn't in a rush when I got to CBR.

So tapped in at the pole at MEL, it beeped and turned green.

Walked up to the bag drop, put the bag on tapped my card, followed the prompts and woosh, my bag was gone! All that took less than 3 minutes from when I walked in the door.

If i wasn't so impatient at the other end, I might do it more often!
