Just to add my data point......

04 May BNE-MEL

Used the NGCI pole (selected my seat at T-80): worked - told me I was now checked in, got SMS confirmation afterwards.

Used the injector with Q Bag Tag: a couple of easy questions, a laser light show later and my bag was off and away. Whole process took a bit under 2 minutes.

Everything about the whole experience was pretty swell.....except for waiting for bags to appear at MEL! After the first bag popped out after 20-25 minutes, mine was #6 in the line. Oh, and no priority boarding at BNE, and seriously those BP/card scanners could stand to be a lot faster in response (it takes about 5 seconds per pax to scan and board with QF, cf. in quite a few cases with DJ it takes 2 seconds).

I could get used to NGCI.

Ok I thought I'd give NGCI a whirl today as I wasn't in a rush when I got to CBR.

So tapped in at the pole at MEL, it beeped and turned green.

Walked up to the bag drop, put the bag on tapped my card, followed the prompts and woosh, my bag was gone! All that took less than 3 minutes from when I walked in the door.

If i wasn't so impatient at the other end, I might do it more often!
I tried it in MEL today for the first time. The bag came out amoungst the first 20 but not as quick as my sister's bag. She is Gold and did not use NGCI. :(

Used it again but this was the first time in MEL.

Tried to check in 2 bags and 2 booster seats (plastic wrapped). Bags OK but the seats were a disaster. Unit scanned and scanned to only fail each time (I was told by QF agent at the injectors that it would work). After 10mins (even with QF assistance) they told me to leave the seats with them and they would load them manually.

So I can only conclude that bags are OK but booster seats are a fail.

I too like the new Check-In...Its fast and efficient.

And I would agree, the actual scanning of the card and the printout of the confirmation at the boarding gate could be a little quicker.

With a regular boarding pass, its scan in a sec or two. But with the new NGCI card, it take a second or two plus another a couple of secs for the printout.

If everybody were using the NGCI process, it could add a little while to the boarding process...

Cheers

Daniel, it does require human assistance for domestic-international transfers, most especially because a human being has to sight your passport! Go to the Service Desk at BNE Domestic.

Does this mean the whole check-in process (BP, bag tags, passport checks) can be done at the international connections check-in counter? Or does one have to use the self-serve check-in to get BP and bag tags to then proceed to the international connections counter?

Yes, for domestic-to-international connections, the whole process is carried out at the Service Desk - don't worry about the self-service kiosks at all.

(By the way, there is no longer a specific "International Connections" check-in)

Now the MEL renovations are complete it's back in T1.

We used it about 5 weeks ago.

It is important you do this as your passport needs to be scanned/noted. If not your BP's will be rejected until it's sorted. (Had this happen at the gate on my way MEL-SYD(-LAX) - I assumed it was an op-up :-|)

SWMBO is a newly minted PS and was very impressed with the NGCI pole & bag drop this morning. Worked a treat.

Can someone tell me if the NGCI pole be used if there are multiple passengers on your booking? I tried looking on the QF web site but couldn't find the answer. :\

Hi Reductionist,

I could never get it to work with one other (work related) pax on the one booking. This was a while ago and I never bother with the pole now, just check in with my iPhone. I also got rid of my workmate(to his own booking reference) ;).

Qantas help people could not get it to work either despite saying that it should not matter.

Hi All,

Faster, Smarter Check-in is available to any passenger who has a Qantas card with a smart chip (look for a silver hologram in the top right of your card) and an Australian or New Zealand passport.
Anyone passengers who do not have either of these can continue to check-in online or at the airport.

Regards,
Red Roo

Thanks Red Roo.

The specific scenario I'm interested in is this:

2 passengers on 1 booking.

Both passengers have the new Qantas Card with the smart chip.

Do we (or, can we) both use the NGCI pole?

It's not a drama if we have to use the kiosk I suppose. It's just that the pole is quick & easy and I have an unreasonably deep hatred for the kiosks.

Based on Red Roo's post I think if you both swipe it should check you both in..
