I'm saddened by this process, i was hoping to scan by putting my wallet up against the machine...

Now I am left with a mental picture of suits mooning the machine because they cannot be bothered removing their wallet - thanks :lol::lol::lol:

It also makes me wonder why Qantas has gone through all this hullabaloo, given the barcodes have been on the card for 12+ months.

Be interesting to see if the card barcode works at the gate at.
1. PER - when you have checked in via OLCI or MOCI (rather than NGCI)
2. Other airports

I may be wrong, but I thought the "new" scanners that were put in place to read the bar codes, also scan the RFID, so instead of holding them in the red light for 3 seconds, they simply wave them over the same spot.

yeah i received my new NGCI QF card today. All I can say is the marketing material it came with must have cost QF a fortune. It amazes me how much they spend on material.

I reckon.

BTW their paper aeroplanes get lousy mileage (range) :p

Unless I followed the instructions incorrectly.

Perhaps those of you with young kids and got the letter could practice for the audition for the next kid who throws the paper aeroplane at the beginning of the QF safety video. :p

It was pretty damn cough. I thought I did it properly too and it just didn't work.

LOVED the idea though :)

I've only just read the full Airports of the Future - Next Gen check in details.... slow I know!

But great to see that they will be introducing domestic priority boarding for WP and J class passengers as well!! Missed that detail. Great news :lol:

I'm not one of the lucky few in the trial. But just did seat selection and noticed that it now asks if Dangerous Goods will be carried as part for the seat selection process, for those passengers using the intelligent Q card.

Got my new card last week. Have always been a hopeless paper aeroplane technician, so didn't even bother trying that!

What do people think of the new design of the cards? No more embossed print - rather its just printed on.

And does the 'Q' in the corner actually do anything or is it all about the barcode and the 'Q' is just for show?

The "Q" is for the chip, which is used when you place the card against the reader at the check in area.

At the gate the barcode is used.

Also all FF cards no longer have embossed printing, all are now smooth.

I have now stopped using OLCI and am only using iPhone check in. It is a little clunky as a process (log into webapp, choose flight, check in, input phone number, get sms, click link to boarding pass...) but saves a piece of paper and can be done without babygr standing at the doorway of the study shouting to come in ;)

The benefit I see here is only if you are rigorous enough in your processes to select seats in advance and then reselect at T-80 (unless you don't care where you are sat) and then just scan at the airport.

I will in most likelihood use this when it is made available to the broader flying public.

My only concern is those times when you don't get to the airport until 20 mins before departure and thus might miss the check in cut off - which you are more likely to risk given you know you have no queues t be concerned about...

Hmm in retrospect I might stick with iPhone and home for a better webapp...

Our new cards were waiting with the pile of other mail when we arrived home yesterday. The Qantas letter was a good one to get as at least it was not a Bill. :D
