Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

No pics but I finished off the bottle of GB Abednego that I opened last night. It was decent on the first night but very much improved after the extra airing time! I really enjoyed this one and for ~$80 in a 6-pack from DMs after my AMEX credit etc, it was brilliant value.

Unfortunately I lost my purse at AKL last week but the silver lining is that I have new replacement cards to register with AMEX for the offer again ;)

The wine - Rockford Vine Vale Riesling 2015
Immediately a Riesling. Citrus-driven "tropical fruit". Healthy mouth-feel and complexity beyond the surface. Balanced. Easy to drink, but an absolute pleasure.

This is a special wine - only available to restaurants and stone wall members at Rockford, but I definitely recommended if you see it on a wine list. Often well priced at the restaurants I have seen it in.

$33.00 CD - $34.29 delivered with insurance.

The food - Home made bread-crumbed and grilled Flathead tails, served with Local "Fish'n'Chup" shop chips, lettuce & tomato salad and fresh lemon.
(Yes - the [-]compost[/-] salad is "basic", but I was in a hurry).

The richer notes of the flathead tails suited the wine well (or vice versa?).

My Scottish friend and I have polished off the bottle in short order, so this wine is clearly a winner.

I tried to do a Vivino for this, but I am still new to all this technology. How does it all work?

Should I be "following" you lot?

While on the theme of white wine, I had this the other day:

2012 Cullen White (Margaret River)

As the label suggests - This is a white wine - a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho. No wonder they just called it "White". This wine has been forgotten in my cellar for a year or two and when I stumbled across it "Drink now" was the theme. I didn't have any at release, but I suspect things have mellowed slightly since release. The aroma of the white sauvignon is well apparent (stonefruits, etc), but the balance of the Semillon and friends make this a very approachable wine. I matched it to some BBQ chicken with light spice and it worked well. The spice may have scared a Chardy off, but this blend held its own.

An entry level label from Cullens, but a solid everyday wine.

It's on here, Mr P: http://www.vivino.com/wines/25294239

But there's only one rating for the 2015.

I popped a note up with some tips on Vivino on the Wine Apps thread. But, if you prefer, you could PM me and I could spend 15 minutes on the phone giving you a whistle stop tour. Once you have mastered the basics, you'll hopefully find it a breeze.

Last night's theme for the tasting group was alternative whites. The Tahbilk Old Vine Marsanne was WOTN.

JohnM must be having one of his long boozy lunches again today given he hadn't posted this yet :)

Luckily still have to find a few more bottles to cull, so should be good drinking for the next week or so.

Next to go: R Wines "The Wine" 2005. Same guys that made the most ridonkulously presented wine I've ever seen "The Anamorphosis" (I still have one of the box sets archived away)

Huge 17% alcohol - put it in the fridge to cool it down a bit, given it was a hot, muggy Sydney evening. Don't let the alcohol scare you off - this is very well made, well structured, big fruit taste. Really impressed by this, pity I only had the one bottle.

Coldstream Hills 2013 The Esplanade Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley)

IMG_0480b.jpg

Succulent cherry and strawberry notes combine with a rich and funky palate, full of complex earthy, wet straw, smoky and dried meat flavours. The flavours are beautifully balanced and the wine has a generous, slightly creamy, mouthfeel. The tannins are supple and chocolaty, the finish long and lingering. Should be a show stopper with more cellar time. A captivating and deliciously moorish pinot.

Nice burgundy colour, medium finish, spicey, vanilla oak. Will certainly develop more as it ages. The Temp definitely dominates the finish.

Nice wine. It's about the glass.:) QF WP would be proud.:)

QF WP heard that!

Been a bit quiet on the drinking (wine) in my house. But Friday night MrsQF WP must have been channeling daver6 because she pulled a Tahblik out of our wine rack (I didn't even know it was there). I didn't search very far to find my selection.

We finished them yesterday afternoon when we had surprise visit from former neighbour who advised they are settling back in Brisbane (that was exciting) but not in their house across the street :(. But their new house is only a 5 min drive and will be the source of many a party in the future.

We also opened this (one of them selected it from my wine rack).

Don't have tasting notes on them - was too busy celebrating

Sunday night Pinots: new shipment from Akarua arrived this week.

Young CO Pinot. Winemaker's note fairly apt "This Central Otago Pinot Noir is layered with generous sweet, ripe, red berries, subtle savoury characters and a touch of spice. Soft supple tannins flow gently across the palate, leading to a long fruit driven finish."

I did intended to take this home but then again I did buy it to drink it.
A mistake wine (note the blend), it is now produced.
There is so much going on that I find it difficult to describe. A nice earthy Grenache with smooth overtones. A very light style making for perfect summer consumption because of the very low tannins. The blend does exhibit some spice and nice fruity characteristics.
It's already 3yo and a drink now wine IMHO. Glad I grabbed a few bottles whilst I had the chance during the Hunter tour.

Purchased recently from Dan's at ~40% discount. Very good value, drinks well now but I'll cellar the two bottles left a few more years.
