Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

A mistake tonight. We are having a major clean up with the grandkids arriving in 10 days.Discovered this one in the cellar.the other 11 bottles were consumed some time ago.Pity I didn't leave 1 or 2 a little later-

Some recent photos I bothered to take:

Farmers Market Sausage Rolls with Grenache Rose from somewhere in Australia...

Château Moulin de Bernat Bordeaux 2010
Picked this up in a mixer from the Fo. The bottle says to open 3 hours prior to serving, and damn you should read those instructions. Pretty austere and horrible upon cork extraction. By the 3rd and into the 4th hour it was quite tolerable for this price point. I think these were going for about $15?? which would have been a bargain.

I actually didn't decant it, and not sure how much it would benefit to be honest.

In this case a good thing I opened this bottle before I got the lamb out of the fridge, but patience was certainly rewarded.

Miles from Nowhere "Best Blocks" Shiraz 2011
The real surprise. This was a comp from the Hyatt Regency Perth that somehow made it home with me and has been sitting in the living room (not cellar) for about 3 years. I felt sorry for it, and opened it with my signature pasta, and what a surprise. "Luscious Fruit", and good structure and balance. I only put the tiniest amount in the pasta sauce and actually enjoyed the rest of the bottle. Totally not what I expected from a freebie.

Another pie and some non-descript wine which was probably worth whingeing about, but I can't remember what it is.

No more wine photos made it into my phone... I will try harder this week.

We had a Penfolds 28 at dinner the other night and it was great for drinking now....so we did just that.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is actually one of their best in terms of accessibility and value for money IMHO.

The premiums are good, but the price tags are getting a bit unrealistic now.

It was $58 at the restaurant in Perth. Was that a reasonable restaurant price?
I could have taken a Diana there at $105 but I didn't.

Been too long Penegal :)

A couple of classics:

Petaluma Coonawarra 2003: 50% Cabernet 50% Merlot, 22 months in French Oak. Crimson red. Blackberry, chocolate, earthfloor flavours. Tannins are superfine. Acidity and structure are good. Lingering finish. Really nice. 92 on CT

97 from Halliday (pre-inflation days) and 95 from the WF guys - so had high expectations, after the first bottle had a dud cork. This is drinking superbly now. Velvety smooth on the palate, with blackberries and subtle oak, and savoury spices. Is "amazeballs" still a thing? If so, this is it. 92 on CT from me.

Tonight:

About an hour for the wine to open up: blueberries and some sweet strawberry flavours, with vanillan oak and chocolate notes as well. Smooth tannins. Long finish. Nice. 91/92 on CT from me.

I opened my second and last bottle of this over the weekend - the first a few months ago went down the sink - thankfully this one was still in good condition and an enjoyable drop

Which year? I have a lone 2010 that I'm wondering if it will be too early to open yet.

Now I am very impressed that you remembered your first case purchase. Alzheimers is kept at bay due to the beneficial antioxidant properties of wines, and coffee. Mine were Wynns 1981 Triple blend with a red sash. Many, many cases were found at Coles at $1.99 each(bottle).

OK, will move it to the back and forget about it for now :)

New wine collections require so much patience!
