Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Celebrating first weekend at home in a month after a real 'mixed bag of lollies' - a LAN run to AKL, a QF to MCY, and a ZL to GFF. This was an Epiqure bonus points special from last year.

2007 Franklin Estate Olmo's Reward tonight. Merlot 46% Cab Franc 45% Malbec 9% from the Frankland River region in WA.

Smooth, savoury, and almost gamey edge to the palate with the plum and cassis playing second fiddle to the earthy and smoky flavours. Quite drying tannins but a nice long finish.

92 from me, very pleased with this pickup from Langton's for $25 delivered.

Sometimes, you just have to indulge in a classic, Coonawarra Cab Sauv with a bit of age in it, on a fine Spring evening in Sydney:

the Wynns Coonawarra Estate Alex 88 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

"This is classic, premium Coonawarra Cab Sauv. It's the 2nd release from Wynns for this single vineyard planted in 1988 in the famous Terra Rossa, and named in honour of the Alexander family that owned this site from the early 1900s until 1966. Usually, the fruit from this vineyard is used by Wynns to make the famous John Riddoch or the Black Label.

The nose is powerful and opulent, the palate medium-full bodied and layered, and the tannins tightly coiled, but smooth and long. As intense cassis, blackberries, bitter dark chocolate, mint, pencil shavings, a touch of sweet strawberry and cedar oaked spices complete a packed but effortless drinking experience.

Drinking really nicely now but it has the power, structure and balance to develop until 2030. There's certainly more to come from this fine Coonawarra Cab Sauv. A Wozza 94.5/100 (4.1/5.0) from me.
"

And big thank you to AnonymousCoward for his generous sharing / generous trigger happy auction finger! Greatly appreciated.

Glad the bottle turned out to be a winner Wozza.

From one Australian classic cabernet to another: Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

IMG_0085_small.jpg

Typical left-bank Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, and small additions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Colour: Purple with brick-red edges.
Nose: Cassis, mint, graphite, tobacco, earth
Palate: Cassis, layers and layers of spice, medium bodied, silky smooth mouth coating tannis, lingering finish.
Well deserving of its Langtons classification. Could drink this all night, every night.
I copped a bit of flack for not rating things below 89, but I'd be extremely disappointed if I had to rate wine of this pedigree at that sort of score. CT93 from me.

I had a 30 year old wine the other day where the cork looked like this. Was largely intact though and wine tasted fine. In the end I reckon that's the key - give it a taste. If you don't like it, don't drink it.

But others here will have more experience and perhaps expert advice.

Photo is a bit blurry, but just looks like a bit of mould. Nothing to be worried about. Before pulling the cork give it a wipe and remove what you can. After pulling the cork, just give the top of the inside of the neck a wipe with a napkin. Should be fine. Pretty common in older wines.

Thanks for the comments. the cork doesn't look good after i pulled it out. its not the mould i worry about, the wine stain around the top of the cork makes me worry. i had a bottle of 93 few years ago, the cork has moulds but no wine stain on top, less than 0.5cm of wine stain at the bottom, this has wine stain all over on the side. doesn't smell good either.

And if it's rubbish, so what. Just get another bottle.

What does the wine smell and taste like though. That's what counts :)

smells awful, the colour looks fine, light redish , i can see my fingers through the wine, taste kind of sour and bitter finish. i can't taste any fruit though, maybe a little, but over powered by the wet carpet flavour.
