Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

That said, Langtons have the 2014 Tyrell's Vat 9, and the Mount Pleasant 1880 and 1921 vines in stock.
lovely haul!

Vat 9 is also at kemenys for $72. I'm surprised with all the excitement about this wine (and it being sold out by the time I became a private bin member) that so much seems to have made it to retail.

Braved the crowds at the PWS Champagne tasting with Viridianne. All the usual suspects where there (Moet, Veuve, Ruinart, Taittinger, Dom etc.). Too many too keep track off (I think there were around 80 all up) but the following caught my eye, either because of the taste, the grapes used, the approach or similar:

37 mate. That one year makes a difference. So far I have 72 maverick quaffers and with 75k bonus FF points I should have a few nice bottles of champers.
For the 'main table' I have 6x GB fishell hoping to get another 6 mount pleasant (2014) and have whites/rose coming from Bloodwood.
The leftovers will be filled by Friends & family deal from Robert Oakley

Where did you get your hands on one of these? I tried to buy a few, but I was away during members pre-sale.
Hopefully will pick up a few soon. I'm getting married in the hunter next year, if I sell her the idea of 'wedding souvenir' wines, I won't have to hide more boxes :)

They are hard to come by, khussey. But you may get lucky if you keep your eye out or plead with McWilliams (by playingthe wedding card). As AC mentioned above, we clubbed together at the right time to pick up 30 bottles between 4 of us in the pre-release members sale. I joined as an 1880 club member and we got the discount prices.

I had the privilege last night of trying another of their amazing 2014 wines:

the Mount Pleasant Rosehill Shiraz 2014

My notes for this early try as follows:

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/54441198

2014 McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Rosehill, Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin - CellarTracker

"Another spectacular 2014 Hunter Shiraz from Mount Pleasant. Rosehill was planted by Maurice O'Shea in 1946, and features a higher, undulating North Esat aspect that's blessed with the renowned Hunter ancient, volcanic soils.

This Shiraz is beautifully made. But for me, a shade under the Old Paddock & Old Hill 2014 at this early stage. But it's more typical of Hunter Shiraz: It's highly aromatic (it's best feature), finely balanced, and intense but med-bodied and silky smooth, with dark cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, mushroom, almond, sea salt and spice. It's very ageworthy. It's why it gets a Wozza 95.5/100 (4.3/5.0) from me
."

For those interested, I did a little blog on both Mount Pleasant Wines here: http://Is the 2014 Hunter vintage w...-2014-hunter-vintage-worthy-of-the-hyperbole/

The other end of the Mount Pleasant scale to Wozza et al, but am enjoying the 2014 High Paddock tonight.

Medium bodied, with a palate of cherry, spice, and earthy undertones. Not a long finish but this was only about $13 from Cracka so I can't expect too much!

A friend of mine just polished off a bottle of Mount Mary Quintet 2010 and raves about it..

Wondering if anyone else here has tasted or enjoyed this red and what your thoughts may be ?

I drank my 2008 Quintet earlier this year, as it doesn't rate highly compared to other vintages. I think I wrote a note in the nice wines thread.

Quintet is in the Langton's classification. It's been a quality lighter cab blend for quite some time. Not cheap though!

I was treated to a 98 quintet last Christmas that blew me away. Not sure if that was a particularly good vintage, or if they all get to that level with a decent amount of bottle age, but it was up there with the nicest I've tried.

Pricey one to collect tho!

The 2013 is available retail from Langtons for $135 (less ~10% Cash Rewards).

97 JO
96 JH

I have a few others stashed away, but I intend to keep those for a while (the oldest is only 2005), so I'm sorry but I can't help you with any other notes.

Whoops that'll teach me not to do due diligence...

I haven't visited GWD very much of late but obviously this is going back quite a way (looking at the 2009 vintage on the label) managed to find it still for sale through Nicks https://www.nicks.com.au/2010-tonic-estate-fountain-of-youth-shiraz? So $23 doesn't sound too bad considering your decent reportage on it, 2010 but that was hardly a bad year in the Barossa...

Thanks for the heads-up, I'm dead-set curious about the Amarone style, I'll have to try and seek some out, Rug another FF'er big wine enthusiast would probably like it too if he hasn't already tried it yet...
Hi whining&dining cant say I have had one of those amorones but will chase it up. The biggest Barossan red that I have enjoyed but sadly have no more was the Greenock Creek Seven Acre shiraz 2006 at 18% alcohol quite enjoyable lots of flavours; alittle heat but much better with 24hours in the decanter. Cheers Rug

I have had a few 05 and 06 from Langton's. Both nice, but both too young at the 10 year mark I tried them.

Watch out for the mixed cases Langton's often sell. It's quite common they'll have a Quintet in them, and at well below the auction guide price. The most I've paid is an average bottle price of $83 (that included the RunRig and Madeleine). The least around the $60-$70 mark (no real top end wines, but included the Quintet).

Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon 2001: Langton's classified and one of the stalwarts of Australian Cabernet. Still dark red in the glass. Cassis, mint and graphite on the nose. The palate has dark fruits, savoury spice and grippy tannins. This drinks much younger than it is. The primary flavour profile is still very much evident - a testament to the dry vintage and excellent cellaring. Impressive. CT91. Thanks to Alzoam for the generous gift - this is a cracker for an estate cabernet.

Bannockburn Chardonnay S.R.H. 2008:
Harking back to an older style of Chardonnay. Along with citrus and apple, there's the butter and nut flavours on the nose. The palate has plenty of fruit and a good acid line. Really nice drinking on a 30 degree Sydney afternoon. Only 100 dozen made. CT91 from me.

Super different wine tonight. And I really, really liked it. Big, bold, warm climate Shiraz drinkers - look away now! This is not going to be pretty!

the Bannockburn Geelong Shiraz 2010

IMG_7718.JPG
In my musings, I concluded:

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/54680500

2010 Bannockburn Shiraz, Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong - CellarTracker

"Move over Côte-Rôtie! Bannockburn (famed for their amazing Pinots), have produced this uniquely light, highly aromatic, complex Shiraz, that hails from their cool climate, dry-grown (30 year average) vines. Halliday gave it a whopping 97.

And I can see why. It's very Bannockburn in style thanks to 100% whole bunches in the ferment and the 2 yrs in French puncheons. Sweet, fleshy red and black cherry, strawberry, asparagus, earthy mushroom, sage, rosemary and black pepper combine on the fragrant nose and the sweet, fleshy viscous palate for a fine, lingering wine. Such elegance. It would be easy to mistake this for a premium Pinot Noir in a blind tasting.

It's still pretty young, with at least 3/4 years in the prime drinking window to go. I loved it. Hence, a Wozza 95.5/100 (4.3/5.0) from me.
