Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Dr Ralph's - I can't stop buying wine quicker than I can consume it - thread has really got me thinking about the wine choices I make. Those choices start at the buying stage. But they also flow through to the wines you actually drink. It's meant I've spent the last 10 days sampling some exquisite wines. Wines that you would hold back for further bottle age. And wines that you'd only bring out to impress the wine-loving father-in-law.

And after a massive week at work (think 4:30 am starts and often 12:30 am finishes), it was only appropriate to continue my fine wine journey with the:

Serrat Close Planted Shiraz Viognier 2015

On Vivino and Cellar Tracker I posted the following note:

2015 Serrat Shiraz - Viognier, Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley - CellarTracker

http://www.vivino.com/users/warren-dav/reviews/54857179

"This is Cool Climate HUGE! Especially the black pepper, and the firery ginger! Ginger? Yes! This Shiraz Viognier (95%/5%) from the Yarra Glen in the Yarra Valley is so close planted that less than a bottle a vine is produced. Halliday annoited a prestigious 98.

Every fragrant whiff is different, as dark black fruits, black pepper, tar, violets, rose petals, honeycomb and a touch of meat leap out the glass. The palate is finely balanced, but concentrated and rounded, taking those flavours on a long drive to that firery ginger, but fine lingering end. Have with a seasoned piece of fine meat for the full fireworks display! Incredible.

How good will this be in 7-12 yrs? It has so much promise. Hence a Wozza 96.5/100 (4.5/5.0) from me.
"

What a fitting wine. And it's definitely my wine of the week, even considering some of the Hunter's best of the 2014 vintage that I've tried. I tried to look for a link to a current stockists for this wine, but could only find Langton's auction lots. Shame. As it's certainly my kind of wine that I would wholeheartedly recommend.

A 2004 Tassie Cabernet tonight - one of my prizes from the last SYD wine tasting event (thanks AC I think) the nose is unbelievable and a very fine wine, but it is not quite as good as the 2000 to drink

It gets out of hand more quickly than you realise Wozza.

Thanks for the report on the Serrat. I have one case put away.

Call me old-fashioned but it looks a little uncouth (I prefer to drink straight from the bottle as I lift it from the pantry shelf thus blocking the family's view, but then again it would only confirm their gravest doubts)
Maybe you should buy magnums W&d that way it does not look like you have drank as much. Guzzle buddy and the giant wine glass just what you need after a bad day or for TGIF. FWIW the wife prefers the giant wine glass no constant trips to the fridge. She usually claims evaporation. Cheers

A gathering of the lads for a tipple..some great wines in the mix..

Billiecart Champers to start - Toasty with a bit of zest..

E&E Blackpepper Shiraz - 2001 - Smokey and herbaceous on opening, medium bodied, just all there! Balanced and silky with some fruit still left in the tank...first rate.

Henschke Mount Edelstone 2004 - A beautiful wine... a florists shop on the nose..elegant blackberries and cherry....just pipped the E&E as wotn.

I have to be a bit more moderate these days Rug, a 1/2 a bottle a night was making me a bit weary the next day (that and my first attack of gout this February) it did cause me to have a look at the glassware I was using and this is/was my weapon of choice, lovely to drink red out of and nearly 2/3 of a bottle gone in one fell swoop!

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

A powerful, dense, and brooding wine. Deep, dark, fruit well supported by the somewhat drying tannins. Lots of sediment, but lots of enjoyment too. Barossa Cab Sav done well.

Picked this up in the AMEX Langtons frenzy earlier in the year for a ridiculous $19!

I just found a pair of schott zwiesel tritan cru classic burgundy glasses that I had been hunting for for a while. Didn't know where they got, looked at the receipts from dannys for a while and was perplexed...BUT....after looking for our new cat which came home on Friday, presto, right under our bed. It says 848ml on the sticker. No need to keep filling the glass. I can't wait to pour someone a tad then empty the rest in my bowl. it should be bloody funny.

I previously bought some white wine tritans and they are a treat.

The thread is nice wines I have drunk. Meatloaf said two out of three ain't bad. I say of the Danny m penfolds tasting today, one out of three is good. These are the 2014's.

Firstly the 128. I can't get into the DB or Wozza qualitative analysis for a medium tipple, but I gave it a 6.5/10. Ridiculous price of mid thirtees on it.

Next the shiraz cab blend of the 389. Very nice indeed. Great fruit that was lacking in the 128, nice barrel treatment and lovely fresh fruity lingering finish. Great mellowing tannins than didn't upset anything. Again, at DM's over seventy bucks, steep in my opinion. At fifty five, maybe. It got an 8/10. It is a delicate wine, no sharp edges, immensely drinkable. For me, just the price is the issue with it, but it's great.

they the 407, the biggest disappointment. Another seventy five bucker, just ridiculous. Dry, bugger all fruit, lacklustre is the work. 6/10. Any clown/reviewer who gives this anymore than 6.5 is deluded.

cheers.

The 620ml looks the go but a tad pricey. Beefarmers sounds good too. I will have to look into both for the good wife and a few others I know. I tend to take my time with each glass I find I enjoy it more. Not good getting gout bloody painful. Hope you saw the funny side of my post. Do you or any AFF member know if there is truth to the statement that magnums take longer to age? Cheers:D

Actually Rug I did find your post funny and particularly the household drinking habits, wifey drinks Sav Blanc almost exclusively (but can be tempted into something more exotic like a Pinot Grigio or the like) she drinks out of thin-walled retro coloured glass tumblers which hold rather more than their size suggests ;). My drinking regimen (makes it sound like a gym programme) is to have just the one glass per night, a big one mind, Monday to Friday then a couple a night over the weekend, NO AFD's, I mean if your liver can't process a single glass of fine vino over 24 hours then it's time to pack it in! Haven't had much experience ageing magnums but my gut feeling is that they will last for longer in the cellar.
And because this is the "nice wines" thread I had better mention the 2014 Schild Estate Shiraz that I'm currently drinking, let's face it, it's not a $50 bottle of wine although I have had 50 buckers that I've enjoyed far less. Without getting too esoteric in my comments it's: dark, swathed with boysenberry and brambly fruits, very fruit-forward, luscious and voluptuous, if it was a woman it would be Gina Lollobrigida and my local bottle shop has it at the moment for 6 for $99, instead of an image of a bottle (mods bear with me here) here's a shot of the woman herself... Heading East to Vic for a change, the last of the Mount Langi Shiraz 2000 - light aromatic nose, a touch of Grenache like raspberry, more the elegant spectrum with a savoury finish- very tasty!

The Schild sounds quite nice; the woman looks quite nice (she was hot in her time). Typical Melbourne weather had me finishing the night befores bottle of Hares Chase Ironscraper 2013; full bodied; everything seems to be coming together nicely; hit the spot on this cold day. Cheers

I've not tried the Ironscraper but heard nothing but good about it (from memory) typical Tassie weather has meant firing up the wood-heater again and snow on Mount Wellington down to the foothills, yes indeed a big red beckons....
