Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

No pictures but Saturday night's tasting was: 2002 Penfolds 389, 2003 Wendouree and 1996 Penfolds Kalimna (Bin 28).

The 389 was superb straight out of the bottle, which gives me hope for the remaining five. Wendouree was average on opening but after two hours was superb. Kalimna was sublime and showed beautiful depth and subtlety.

Start with simpatico, almost all the 2018 wine I’ve tried are tannins over fruit ,almost as good as the Standish but this is softer, mix berry fruits, chocolate ,toasty, I can’t tell if it is the oak that makes it toasty.again, power all the way.
This next bottle uses the same fruit but more oak, very noticeable sweetness and creamy, raspberry ,silky smooth mouthfull, very approachable,I think the star of this vintage probably goes to the simpatico,in all aspect.

How approachable were these young? I have some '16 Sympatico and Symposium I'm keen to give a go.

With symposium I think it’s good to drink now, the mataro blend makes it quite easy to drink. The simpatico not as friendly for the 16’ vintage, I pop n pour most of the time to see how the wine changes during the day, but if you are just drinking at night then decant it or just unscrew the cap during the morning , when you come home from work you’ll have a decent bottle waiting for you.

Got it for $10 during recent DM clearance sale.
I know Fox Creek do mean strait Shiraz but this is first time I’m trying one of their blends. Was expecting decent quaffer but this JSM is so much more. Seriously good drop and a bargain even at $25 RRP.

I am pretty sure that the vines my father planted contribute to that. He was contracted to Fox Creek for a few years. They knew they were on to a good thing, so they made my father an offer he couldn't refuse and bought the vineyard.

Chardonnay: Eastern Peake Intrinsic >> Howard Park > Domaine Naturaliste Floris

Grenache: first-love Lino Ramble Gomas still splendid, as is/was Thistledown Smart, my first from that producer and vineyard - looking forward to the Pannell version

Parri Chianti: preferred previous Australian sangiovese, such as Coriole

what 2-year-old powerhouse shirazes weren't/aren't?

ps no backdrop boxes? :)

It was your post that got me to order the Montbourgeau, so thank you. It was a pretty good wine, but acid not quite as high as I expected. I have one more bottle which I'll aim to knock off in the next couple of years. Also, showed best when at about 15-17 degrees C. Grande Annee was all class. Again, showed its best warmed up a little so about 12C.

how about the truffle? how and how long did it keep?

The truffle was exceptional. Very good flavour and aromas. I had 90% of it within two weeks and was still in pretty good condition at the two week mark. I kept a tiny bit in a jar with eggs which was consumed at the three week mark. At this point it had started to loose a bit of intensity.

I caught up with my friend who brought it up from Manjimup on Wednesday night. She was telling me the same as the article. Total bumper season but they can't move the product. They're not able to get it fresh to Europe/Asia. Even to the east coast in a timely fashion is a struggle. Apparently they had freight contracts in place to send direct to Melbourne from Busselton when the JQ flights started up.
