Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Today celebrating Moist Merimbula, we are drinking this nice Savignan from the Clare Valley. I thought it had a touch of oiliness with a nice citrus finish. A delightful wine.

We were at Pikes last weekend (the SA long weekend) today we were at the Cube (d’Arenberg) in the McLaren Vale. Although I may be saving money by not being able to travel however I fear that our visits to wineries is costing us the savings, if not more.

how was the Grandfather? been meaning/wanting to buy, can't remember if i've tried it yet - how does it compare with other vintage/tawny ports?

I really like the Grandfather. It's a tawny, so nothing like any vintage ports. Very complex, lots of nuttiness and finishes long and not cloying at all. I tend to usually have an open bottle in the cellar. Not too dissiumular to Mr Pickwicks Particular from Saltram. Maybe even a bit better. Can usually get it on the cheap from cellardoor.co with your birthday voucher.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

We had a dinner party last Sat. to celebrate my birthday and finished it off with a bottle of Penfolds Grandfather Port from the year of my birth. Surprisingly it was still bloody good. Being a tawny port it had not improved since it was bottled in 1969 but still had that luscious flavour.
The cork was wedged very tightly and broke into several pieces but after straining into the decanter the result was outstanding.

I agree about the Grandfather.

honestly can't remember how the 2015 pinot noirs compared, but 2007 Block 9 > 2017 St. Peters shiraz

nice to have your own Wynnsday at home to celebrate the new releases - any highlights? how were the Messenger and O'Deas?

thanks - i possibly have, however can't really recall tasting a tawny - meant to buy Seppelt DP90 at some stage a while back, but by the time i remembered, it was discontinued - how are they different to vintage ports?

don't cellardoor.co birthday vouchers usually exclude Penfolds? anyway, doubt that I'll receive another again, with being just at member level and likely to stay there

Montoro is a somewhat unusual winery in Orange NSW. They make 7 wines and all 7 are Shiraz.
Madge is the mother or mother in law of the owner IIRC and she only really likes white wine. So what to do?
Well, why not produce a White Shiraz just for Madge.
Montoro is probably the only place in Australia that make a White Shiraz.
It's difficult for me to describe this wine. It's really dry, not unlike a Chablis and I found it to have a rather long finish. We had it chilled as suggested but for a different experience you can drink it at room temperature. IMG20201009193218.jpg

Took this along to great little Italian BYO place near us in Shenton Park last night. Could have used more of a decant, but went really well with my goat chops.

Different in terms of flavour profiles or how they're made? For the latter, Google will give a much better (in depth) answer. Probably same for flavour profiles.

I love vintage port too. Biggest issue I have is like any still wine, crack the bottle and it needs to be consumed. Tawny is already oxidised from how it's produced, so no issues just have a glass and closing the bottle for next month approach. I also find VPs a bit unapproachable when young. They also don't tend to have that nutty character of tawnys.

I've been thirsty the last few days!

- 4.5 / 5 for the Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay. Full of flavour with pecan, butterscotch, citrus, nectarine and pear most prominent. Polishing off the final glass right now... so yum!

- 3.5 / 5 for the SC Pannell Grenache. I think my expectations were too high given the Pannell name and a label that promised a "highly perfumed" wine, and more. In fact the aromas were very restrained and the wine kinda boring. Disappointed.

- 4 / 5 for the Paritua Red. A nice, smooth merlot-based Bordeaux Blend, which I quite like occasionally. This was a recent VM purchase ($28 - still available, deal 35459) and am happy with it.

- 4.5 / 5 for the Duke's cab sav. I got sucked in by the 98 James Halliday rating and $35 price tag. Delicious, with intense black fruit flavours and earthy, herbal and spice notes. Great value. Still available at Different Drop, I believe.

All in all it's been a pretty good weekend!

Sorry for the multiple photos. Drank them on separate and forgot to keep the bottles for group photo.

All four Pinots are similarly priced.

Gembrook, TMbT and Hurley were fantastic but Home Hill wasn’t up to par. A bit disappointing from JH98 wine but maybe it needs to sit a bit longer. Will make sure to revisit this one in a year or two.

The most impressive of all was Gembrook, followed by TMbT and Hurley which is a great producer but Lodestone is probably my least favourite from their range though it did age incredibly well.

Was the Home Hill estate given 98 from Halliday? I think that was the Kelly’s Reserve that got the 98 wasn’t it?
I remember thinking the same thing at the cellar door last year, the estate Pinot was just very flat in comparison to the beautiful Kelly’s reserve

Actually both got 98 points from JH. Go figure...

Something a little different again with some grazing plates for lunch with a retired EK A380 driver mate at schmick Shorehouse, PERfect Swanbourne Beach, today. It was their 'wine of the month' type of thing. We had a glass each to give it a go. Followed up with a bottle. Very enjoyable.
