Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Last couple of times we’ve been to Gauchos the experience was disappointing. Average steaks, bad service and they jacked up their corkage fee. Having said that, Meat & Wine Co are not much better (in Melbourne at least).

Sounds like it's gone downhill. I've been to Meat & Wine Co in Perth a couple of times. Nothing wrong with it but nothing great about it either. I had a better steak recently at the Pullman SYD airport recently.

We had mini AFF gathering at Meat & Wine Co last year, four members. Three of us had to send back the steaks for being overcooked!

We should do a run to Flemings Steakhouse in El Segundo which is close to Los Angeles Airport. Or Ruths Chris in Marina del Rey as steaks are way better over in California. Just have to save up to cover the 20% tip and figure out the red wine to pair with the steak.

Out of curiosity....why go there when you can go to Gouchos? Having asked this, I haven't been to Gouchos in a long time but memory tells me it is much better than Meat & Wine Co (in Perth at least).
For me to is because it is one of the few places I can use my Yuma and get $50 off. Have to use another 2000 before the end of December.

2012 South Oz cabernet showdown this weekend. At 1/3 of my purchase price, the Clarendon was the pick of the pair. Shadrach still with plenty of meat on the bone whereas the Clarendon drinking perfectly now.

Last year interstate covid lockdowns forced us to travel more in our own state so we checked out some local wineries. I don’t usually recommend QLD wines but there are some exceptions. Opened this one last night and I reckon it’s good expression of cool climate Durif.

Is this what they'd call a steak run? Can we BYO? Know anywhere nearby the AFFers can crash for the night? ;)

We went to Witches Falls Winery - Cellar Door and Online Store winery in Tamborine Mountain region a few weeks back and did a tasting and I have to say that I was seriously underwhelmed with their product (approached with an open mind considering SA is overall my go-to). Thin to the point of austerity and the majority of their wines made from grapes sourced from SA (apparently) because of variable vintages(?). Whites better than the reds but I was shocked at the lack of character and flavour profile 😐

Tonight’s theme: 2016 or older Cabernet Sauvignon.

@Daver6 is away in Qld, so it was a great opportunity for everyone to bring something decent. Too bad Mrs Daver6 had to miss out…

Owing particularly to one participant’s generosity, we had 9 peeps and 15 wines. 😎

A cracking lineup from 2016 back to 1995. All very good to excellent with the exception of the 2004 Thompson Estate which was a mess.
