Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I am sure it was better than the garbage I had tonight... Some Folded Pen wine.

I'm not sure, but the Riesling went well with the pre dinner cheese and the chicken dinner.

I think riesling's tremendously under-rated here in Aus. Top-notch riesling can go with so many dishes (provided you get the right combination of sweetness, acidity etc. and you aren't eating beef wellington or similar). Anything from certain cheese to pork to spicey Asian food can go with riesling. And the best bit is that most top rieslings in Aus go for <$50 retail, and much less on sale.

Edit: spelling, and grammar. Even my edits are ****e

I think we're really finding that out. There's now a couple different Rieslings in our previously all red cellar.

Inspired by Daver6's photo, I decided to tip out our cork "jar" (it was jar until that got full, and I needed to find a bigger, albeit ugly, recepticle) and see what was in it. I started keeping these in 2013 (shortly after our move back from overseas) as a lot of these wines tended to be the older sort still under cork that were drunk on special occaisions and in good company. After reviewing the shot, I think I might have a problem ... a cork collecting problem :)

I hope that the AFF wine lover's community has also had, or will have, the opportunity to share in some of the same great wines that I've had the opportunity to and share experiences of stuff I'll never have the opportunity too - life's too short to drink bad wine. Unfortunately, life's too short to try all the good wine too (and still have a liver). To some extent, we all live vicariously. Please keep sharing in this forum!

Quinta do Bomfim tasting. All fabulous. If I had to pick it would be the middle one.

And some we didn't get to try.

I agree. It's one style of white that I quite enjoy and this one went well with the creamy pie filling that had a hint of lemon to it.

So, 1 week on & now for the Zinfandel. One again 17% but you'd never know (provided you don't guzzle it like water).

A very similar flavour profile to the Durif, but not so robust. Super smooth, velvety palate that just goes on & on. Once again, like the Durif, no hints of jamminess at all. No splinters from what must be a lot of oak. Quite brilliant, just a notch below the Durif.

Now to hide the extras I got, see what they're like in a couple of years. :D

Nice to hear Riesling getting a good rap here. Seriously underpriced with respect to quality. Thank goodness for all those SB drinkers keeping Riesling producers profitable :p

I didn't really feel like wine tonight but +1 felt like a red so I cracked this Fo bottle thinking I would sip and savour just one glass. I'm not sure where it all went wrong but the bottle is now empty. Man this is a nice wine

I just can't get past the white pepper taste in the Maverick Twins GSM 2014 - I sometimes astounded that there's even any wine those bottles! I'm happy to gift my bottles to Sydney-siders who like this

I wasnt too fussed on it either (though whether it was white pepper or something else...). Must give it a second chance at some point.

I had a 2014 Maverick twins GSM over a couple of nights finishing last night, and really have to agree (especially given price). I had one bottle upon purchase in January and found a pronounced 'green' (i.e. stem) note that took a good decant to tame. I thought i'd leave the rest for a while to settle. But upon my second bottle last night the green note was gone and I was getting a load of roses on the nose, mixed in with another spice I couldn't pick(perhaps the white pepper?). There was a jube-y sweet arrival on the palate that quickly turned into tart red fruits, but the overall impression I was left with was one of Turkish Delight!

Not everyones bag I would surmise, but smelling a good wine is about half the experience for me, and this one is pretty fragrant. I'll drink again in another couple of months to see if the smells are there, and to nail down those spices I couldn't quite place.

Maybe ones of these days those of us that can't smell or taste some of these will book in to do a wine appreciation course (in our capital cities)....;)

If I could put in my two scents worth, I can ascertain many, but not all of those bouquets and I thank my dad for that. We had a house next door to a musty, dusty, smelly ol factory(sic).
