Hi all, as is becoming usual for me, my adeptness in posting photos is hampered by having an old Colombian mobile that does not like to "share" with my lap-top....

This is my second crack at this after I got a "few" last week.

This evening started with a bottle of Poole's Rock semillon - yet another varietal that is relatively new to me, but actually enjoyed. Had it in the chill section of the fridge, but after a few minutes to let it get a tad warmer (4 degrees is a sin for almost anything) it revealed quite an intense variety of aromas. Somewhat perplexing to me as a newbie. Overall a very palatable white - quite dry with a long palate. Have stashed a few bottles to try each year for a while to see how it develops.

I had intended to go to bed early, so followed that up with a cheapie - Riddoch 2018 cab merlot that is going for a bargain two-for-one at Dans at the moment. Not much to say on it - it is what I simply view as a perfectly OK "house" wine. I think that when you are in the lower cost options, blends become something almost unnecessary to closely contemplate.

But due to a party at a nearby house, I have stayed up and thus decided for my second experience of the Epic Negociants No 40 shiraz.

As I have said previously, shiraz is a very aussie thing. Never done much for me, but probably because familiarity is what makes most people happy. But trying it after the semillon and the cab sav, maybe it has enabled a greater deal of respect now in me.

And I am really enjoying it.

As is me, there are restrictions on a proper sampling - imbibing it out here on the deck in the dark, I cannot study properly something I love - the sheer colour. I have no sheet of clean white paper for a background - instead use the laptop screen - and even there I can see somewhat. It is not cloudy, but has that slight opaqueness that is beyond its tender years - this is only a 2017 vintage.

On the nose it has what is often described as "eucalypt" in Australia - I get that. A complex and not un-pleasant experience.

I would describe it as of medium body, but really it is far fuller than that - it is just that I have been subject to some tipples that make this almost a rose ;)

Actually quite delicious - the overriding perception to me being of a lovely blackberry jam - ie the red fruits having that aged, almost burnt (in a good way :) aspect.

Again, swayed by my previous assaults, the tannins are smooth and desirable.

All in all am really enjoying it, hence my desire to post.
 
I am at that stage of my life where buying wine is infrequent.I still have quite a few bottles to finish off in my declining years.However one of the greatest pleasures is putting away wines in the cellar that you think will age.Sometimes it is easy but the real challenge is trusting your pallate and putting away a wine that others haven't picked.One of these was in that category.

Obviously an easy choice.I have another bottle and will consume it in another 1-2 years.Will not last as long as those from the mid 70s that I have had.

Most thought this merlot wouldn't get to 21 but it did.It was my last bottle and wouldn't last much longer but very easy drinking.

You certainly can cellar whites.The Chardy was past it's best but the reisling was still good.
 
Early celebration for my cousin uni graduation, she ask if she could pick a bottle from my wall cabinet and I just quickly said yes as I was pretty sure I don’t have much aged wines in that cabinet, then her sister asked the same thing and I just waved my hand and I’m preparing a dish for this dinner as well.

Before they left my place i saw what they hold up showing me what wine they picked , I saw a penfolds label and a Wynn’s label bottle , I’m pretty sure I have some bin 2 and a bin 9 somewhere and I have lots of black labels. this is what happen at dinner.

I have no idea how these bottles end up at my cabinets, it’s too late to do anything about it, corks off, and I was told the penfolds cork was good, Wynn’s cork was soaked half way and broke in half when it comes out.

Bin 389 was still bold another 2hr decant , but can notice the leather and some dark sweet fruits, I pour another glass just to breath while trying the Wynn’s.

Wynn’s cab. very light redish colour , similar dark fruit as the bin 389, but not much sweetness ,maybe past it’s peak?!but the herbs and woody flavour is still around, medium finish.

At the end I didn’t get to taste my last glass of bin 389, long story short ,my cousin thought it was funny to mix the 2 together,I just had a glass of Wynn’s cab/bin 389 at the end which just added a bit of sweetness that I was expecting. Fun night! But please no more mixing!
 
Ok Tielec, waited long enough so opened first bottle tonight with a neighbour.

Just wonderful example of the schist Liam soils in the Pisa Range District. Medium body, good fruit, nice depth, long spicy (Rotundone) finish on the palate. Opened up after an hour and mellowed to be excellent drinking. (Neighbour preferred the initial glass). Nice clone blend.

Will superb in maybe 2 years.

JohnM, when you’ve stopped pi**ing about in boats and eating crayfish, get your chops around some.:)
 
Yep the turkey flat rose is good one.
Another couple good ones are bird in hand rose from the Adelaide hills and mr micks rose from Clare valley

Interestingly I don't rate Mr Micks Rose - I still find some of the French ones you get online are better and cheaper than some of the Aussie ones and there are some shocking Aussie roses
