Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Hey boomy,
How was the No1 drinking? I was going to open that on Tuesday night

I like it how you already plan what to drink in advance :)

The No1 was lovely but still has long way to go. Since I have more of this vintage in storage I like to open one bottle every year to see how it travels.

I have a friend who held back saying 'I taste kero' for fear of being seen as foolish.

When she did finally blurt it out, I said 'Paula, you're a Riesling super taster. Kero is an acknowledged flavour in the profile, only detected by some - ie. the elite.' Pleased as punch, and never held back on what she thinks about wine since. :)

It’s an interesting molecule and is trimethyl dihydronapthalene or TDN. Amazing what a range of molecules can come from fermentation and ageing of simple grapes.

We love spicy food and usually drink beer with it but some wine verities can also match well.
Viognier is one of my favourites and to continue with last night’s theme I chose one from Barossa.

What’s your wine choice to go with spicy food?

Off dry Riesling like a Spatlese. A Gewurtz is a good match too.

Not being a huge white wine lover, don't mind a reasonable Grenache with spicy food.

Crawford River still young at thirteen

0ym8TG1.jpg

decided upon this after tasting 2017 Ten Minutes by Tractor McCutcheon, Chatto and Sailor Seeks Horse, plus JJ Prum and chablis (though i like sherry, especially palo cortado and oloroso, didn't enjoy vin jaune), at Ryne

medhurst.jpg
preferred the pinot shiraz

hillcrest.jpg
nice cabernet and oaked sauvignon blanc

pocw.jpg
Fredrick Stevenson grenache splendid, POCW pinot shiraz also tasty, Jimjoca > Rouleur

murdoch.jpg
Insider still going strong, Maragle > Murdoch Hill > Freycinet

yhqftYA.jpg

one of the best $40 champagnes

latta.jpg
enjoyed Corduroy the most, not too keen on the Jurassique

riorret.jpg
Little Yarra for pinot - shiraz, Woods Crampton

I9JSQLU.jpg

wish i'd bought this at The Den - delicious

swinney.jpg
all fantastic reds, standout being Mayer - must seek this/close-planted in future (still yet to try Dr Mayer, didn't like Bloody Hill) - Joblot needs more time (best on third/final day), Juxtaposed > Swinney, Lethbridge > Guthrie

sanglier.jpg
M3 and Sanglier tops, though Scorpos best value at $10

anim.jpg
all great wines, perhaps 2016 Lethbridge weakest with 2017 the favourite, Clarence House marvellous as usual, Stefano Lubiana needs time (best on third/final day), Anim juicy

Last night, at @Daver6's suggestion, our tasting group had its first virtual tasting, using Zoom.

What a hoot! At one point we had about 13 people online. Duration was notionally 1830-2030h. I bailed a little after 2100h to go and cook some dinner. I think it wrapped up a little before 2120h.

The prize went to a guy who had a Swinney Farvie Grenache that's recently been raved about. https://www.swinney.com.au/assets/client/File/Nick Ryan The Australian 10.3.20.pdf

It came in a wooden box with straw (in retrospect it was agreed that should have been a warning signal  ) for a lazy $150. Not a good wine at all in his opinion - and he's in the wine game. Needless to say, he was spewing. But it certainly had the conversation flowing. 😜 What his fiance had to say to him subsequently remains a mystery.

I had the Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon that I dragged back from South Africa a few years ago. Much lighter bodied and less textural than I expected. Nothing wrong with it, but no wow factor.

Completely OTT bottle weighing well over a kg and with with a monstrously deep punt. A bit along the lines of wooden boxes with straw...

Needless to say, @Daver6 disgraced himself with some pet-nat thing from Jura. Just as well it was a virtual tasting 😜 - but why he was trying to poison Mrs @Daver6 in public remains a mystery. o_O:p

We've vowed to do it again!

Had a quiet night. Just a Poole's Rock Premier Semillon, to pair with a vegetarian "greek salad' that we enjoyed as a family. Nice enough tipple, but now have retired to enjoy some house wine (The Frontera Pinot Noir) as I grapple with AFF... :)

Fantastic idea, how did you structure this to keep everyone involved?

It had no structure!

We all chatted/shot the breeze and gradually worked our way through each person speaking knowledgeably coughping on about their wine. Then we played guessing games/quizzing about variety, blend, region, the name of the winemaker's mistress - you know, all the b/s.

We have a pretty garrulous and mixed age/gender lot who are all up for a bit of fun, so maybe that helped. Anyway, it really was a blast - confirmed by several congratulatory posts afterwards on the private Facebook group that we use as the communication tool.

@Daver6 works in IT, so he did the Zoom-wrangling on his account, but once the link is up and the software downloaded, it's dead simple.
