I would agree Dave.

I have noticed as of recent that international luggage tagging is also rather hit and miss. A frequent long haul, my luggage was tagged "Priority" rather than the 1st class I'm entitled to. Domestic - it matters not, once transfering through other ports - it matters a hell of a lot more.

One day I was flying SYD-NAA (Narrabri), and the agent forget the tag initially (and really I didn't care as it all comes out the same trolley), but then remembered and started putting one on, I said not to bother! She was surprised as most travellers insist even for such minor destinations.

I would believe or at least hope to believe that once my luggage leaves my site with a purple tag on it, the luggage is being looked after and treated with respect (yes, I did get knocked on the head with a golf ball today - why do you ask?)

All joking aside, I agree with the above statements from dajop, however, if my flights require transit, anything that helps get trusty old samsonite from Mel to where I'm going is a great help. As you will see in previous posts, I have had trouble with luggage... LOL (wasn't funny at the time)

On our AKL-SYD flight at christmas, he forgot my priority tags. It usually doesn't matter, but this time we were in the first 5 people to get to the baggage claim, and of course our bags were almost last to appear

I always watch for correct tagging when checking luggage and I am ready to inform the agent If I feel it is incorrect.

It is something I have learned to do over the years. 4 times out of 5 it's correctly done but it's that other time you need to be alert for.

When an error is made and I mention it, often trotted out in attempt to pacify me is a statement something along the lines of "Oh, it doesn't really matter anyway as baggage handling is computerised and your status will be taken into account by the computers". My standard answer is that computers aren't always working and failing anything else the bags still need to be manually placed on conveyors.

My priority tagged luggage has come out last at Perth airport, on 2 occasions. One flight was on a 747, so I had to wait some time. I do wonder what is the definition of priority luggage.

Unfortunately I have to admit that my home port Perth, is the worst airport to get my baggage from. Even when marked first or business it still comes out almost last. Numerous occasions I have to stand there waiting for my bags after paying big bickies for a J seat. I have once wasted my breath by complaining to QF customer Care, and they are appropriately names, because they didn't care.

Rant, rant, rant and rave. Anyway enough baggage is my grudge with Qantas.

Its not good, but since i am lucky to have had mine arrive every single flight i wont complain too much, also if you have bags tagged all the way through on a transit you also seem to be last regardless.

My bags have never been lost as yet, missplaced twice by Qantas, once by Air Canada out of LHR, and once by AA due to a late flight out of DEN due to snow to a tight connection from DFW to BNA. Always had my bags within 8 hours except once with Qantas on a domestic flight when it was 24 hours. I just thank myself lucky that I don't need a wheelchair. The number of time Qantas have lost one of WA's pollies, graham edwards, is unbelievable.

I think if Qantas want to retain their repuatation as a full service airline, and make promises in regard to priority bags then they should live up to it. Take some control of the baggage handlers when loading/unloading baggage. I get frustrated when every other bag (untagged) comes out first, and honestly, there are not too many tagged bags as a % of total stowed.
Infrequent travellers are happy to wait for their bags as it extends their time in the airport and they really don't know any difference.
On a Mel-Syd flight (I always have to check something in due to my occupation) I really don't care about the food. entertainment etc, I just want to get my bag and go. What this means then is that if they don't get the bags right then I all I am doing is getting a few points, so I may as well fly Virgin where the prices are often considerably cheaper.

It is a touchy subject, I just think if you offer something, then as a company it should be followed through and delivered..

..ps - it is early, I am grumpy, and just how do I hide my name now so any baggage handlers can't single me out!

That's easy.. as mentioned before, put a 'LAST' tag on your bag

Its a real annoyance for me also. It will be interesting once I hit OW Emerald to see whether the baggage handling improves and it gets tagged as F.

Personally I find QFs domestic baggage reclaim to be pretty decent. It is normal for the bags, ime, to start coming off within around 10 minutes of arrival which I find most acceptable; even if the bags don't come out 1st , the length of time I have to wait is pretty short. Comparing it to baggage reclaim in London or the US , it is excellent imo

That's easy.. as mentioned before, put a 'LAST' tag on your bag

I put my office address on my bags and my QFF number. That way they can be traced to me if lost, but not identify my home as being empty while I am away.

Ditto NM, and with my experiences I've only had 1 bad one, and that was the very first time I had the "priviledge", mine came off last. Every other time mine have always been one of the first to come off, and arriving in Hong Kong, and then back in Perth was suprised to see my bags sitting there waiting for me as soon as I walked through

Hmm, first I have heard of this too. If that is in fact the case then they need to update their website as it still clearly states:


Priority tagging is a bit hit and miss. IME, the priority tagged luggage about 25% of the time comes out on the carousel after the untagged luggage, probably because their is less untagged than tagged. :shock:

I have been a QC member since Sept 2001, went to Plat March 2002 and am now gold. The only time I have benefitted from priority baggage was when I flew J class. On other occasions they have stuck the orange priority tag on the bag but that means nothing. In fact, it's a safe bet that if you're in my party your baggage will be unloaded last, pink or orange tags or not!

I had real express priority baggage coming back to MEL via SYD from HKG earlier this week.

Used Airport express ITCI; bags were dutifully tagged with the Yellow First.

Next time I saw the bags was in SYD T1, amongst the first out. Carted them through customs and redeposited them Domestic Transfer check in

Too the b*s to T3.

Had a 2 hour wait in SYD then off to MEL.

Came down to the CityFlyer baggage conveyor where the crowd was building / milling waiting for their bags to come out.

The conveyor had not yet started, but lo and behold, there were two bags of mine just sitting there! :shock:

(I guess they must have came on an earlier flight.)

Only problem was, we had to wait another 35 minutes for our remaining bag to appear; well after many of the other passengers had been reunited with theirs.

Just to revive an old thread, i was flying DragonAir from PVG and bags not tagged priority, as expected not OW yet.
But when i picked them up in SIN (Via HKG) it was one of the first out (beat me through immigration and only 2 people in line !, and a 2 second shop via duty free).... It had a big CX priorty baggage sticker thing !

So CX must have read the bar codes as they transfered it from DragonAir in HKG and matched my OW status and tagged it for the onward journey.

Interesting to see anyway.

Coming back from TSV to BNE last week we faced the usual long stroll from gate 19 to the baggage carousel. After a short wait a trailer turned up and deposited a few bags tagged Business and then left. A longer while later the remainder turned up in no particular order with the majority of Priority tags down the order.

Won't be any difference when they do join OneWorld. Priority baggage is not a OneWorld benefit.

True true, I knew about the business class check in, but i didn't realise the deal with luggage tages, so its the airlines themselves that decide to give you the privlege of baggage tagging.
