Noise Cancelling Headphones

My Sennheiser PXC 450s are amazing. The sound reproduction is great and they cancel a fair bit of the noise. Would really like to do a live trial of The QCs and the Sennheisers on the same flight, so if some weirdo bugs you on a flight to try your headphones in exchange for his, that be me. Will probably be Per-Sin in early June.

Its a very new product, and I also haven't seen any online reviews.
(But you can check out this 'video review' from a US-based retailer - NoiseHush i7 Stereo Noise Cancelling Headphones i7-12174 - YouTube)

I saw the product at a trade show in the US earlier this month and was very impressed with the build quality, specifications, and performance - equal I'd say to a leading brand product costing 3 times as much!

So I ordered them for our store and am able to offer them at more-or-less the US price.

I have confidence in this product and am happy to make one available for review by an AFF member. If you are interested, please PM me detailing your planned trips and experience with other products.

zazz.com.au has noise cancelling headphones for sale today till midnight

"Klipsch M40 Noise Cancelling Headphones 269.95
RRP of more than $450 - Don't pay more for class leading Klipsch quality"
I know nothing about these but put this up in case anyone is interested

Never heard of them, and they've never come up in any comparisons I've seen.

At that price I'd just shell for the sennheiser 450s or Bose QCs

I love my Senns, no downsides as far as I have seen (about 2 years use, multiple flights and trains).

I've read the QCs may have better NC capability but nothing beats the 450s for sound reproduction (in the NC field)

Any general recommendations? Got a trip to Central America via the US in about 10 days, and my old Sony's have just about coughped out. I was looking at the Beats by Dre headphones as a possible replacement (lots of people rave about them, but I wonder how much of that is marketing hype vs. actual quality), but I'm sure there's probably better options. I'm female and have a fairly small head, so I will want a set that trend a little on the smaller side in terms of over-head size.

In Perth, and flying via MEL/LAX/MIA. Presumably anything recommended would be cheaper to pick up in the US in transit? I'm sure my current ones can last another flight or two if necessary...

Forget Beats by Dre.. , unless image is your 'thing".. Try the hush on AFF or trump up to the Bose QC15..

I brought the Bose QC15 a few months ago and have found them brilliant, then again these are the first pair of noise cancelling headphones that i have purchased.

Steer clear of the Beats (assuming you are looking at the Executive model). They are beautiful. Gorgeous. But they are awful. I bought a pair of Quietcomfort 15 and my wife bought the Beats Exec for a recent trip. We returned the Beats when we got back and swapped for the Bose (thanks to Apples no questions asked return policy and price matching!) because:
- the white noise when the n/c is turned on is very loud, it is distracting even on a flight. the Bose is whisper quiet when there is no sound source plugged in.
- the quality of the n/c is very ordinary, no match for the Bose. The years of research have paid off, and Beats just cant match it. Very noticable when side to side comparison made, particularly on an aircraft.
- the Beats are very, very heavy. Considering you'll be wearing them for a long flight, this will be a problem!
- one of the two cables for the Beats (looks nice in red!) was producing hollow/tinny sound. We replaced the first set at the store (again, no probs with Apple) thinking it was a manufacturing fault. The staff were horrified at the sound. Second set had same problem, so not sure what is happening with the cable, maybe a tricky connection that needs to be just right.

Your mileage may vary, of course but I would steer well clear. Do not succumb to the sales staff that push Beats due to their own preferences (guided by fashion rather than real world product use?).

Thanks for the advice on the Beats :) That's why I said I was concerned a lot of the raving about the Beats was more marketing hype than actual quality. You basically confirmed what I thought.

I will venture in to my local Apple store (or I think there might be a Bose store around) and check out the QC15 headphones recommended. Presumably still cheaper to pick these up duty free in transit in the US? Or know of any good places to buy them in Australia? I fly on the 25th, so not got a great deal of time to get anything shipped to Perth...

I haven't tried the QC15, but recently acquired a set of QC3's and they are phenomenal. Much better than any noise cancelling headphones I've had before.

OZ price for Bose 15's $399 in US $299 latter what I paid while there.

Not necessarily, a bit of planning you can get them at Myer when they have a 10% off sale, using Myer gift cards which often have a 10% sale, giving you a 20% discount down to $319.20, and then getting the travellers GST refund of 29.10 on that brings them below US pricing, not including Myer 1 points.

Funkear have the QC3s at a discount at present.

Right. I can use my Sony's till I hit LA and then hopefully pick up the QC15's in transit at LAX. Unless I see them on sale in MEL duty free - though I'm not holding my breath on that!

I've got the QC15s - big fan (but full disclosure, I haven't tried others out). It is annoying though that the ear pads are coming apart (had them for 2 years) but they can be easily replaced (and note it's $65 in Oz, $36 in US). I'm hanging to read reviews of the new Bose QC20s though - about to be released shortly and are in-ear noise cancelling. Very keen to see how they match up to the QC15s for noise cancelling.
