Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Just read that BA flights from (but not to) Brazil have had taxes reduced (down to GBP24) and thought that might help planners on here

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Personally I've never had any luck getting a transit through HKG with 2 CX flights (but admittedly the combos I've tried for have been on major routes from Europe or Nth America). Other AFFers (as they have stated in this thread) have apparently been successful though. From memory the second leg of one such combo was a direct flight from HKG - ADL; so it appears that not all CX combos through HKG with a <24hr transit time are blocked.

In October last year +1 & I booked an ~ 6 hour transit through HKG without any problems. SYD-HKG-MXP

Last Saturday I helped 2 friends book an overnight (<24Hour) transit thru HKG. MEL-HKG-CDG

Both times with 2 CX flights. They do exist so keep trying.

We talk here about QF releasing Award seats at midnight GMT (10/11am Australian Eastern) Question - is that the time that QF "updates" it's system, so that all OW carriers award seats update. Or does the system update at the time each individual airline supplies data to QF.

In a nutshell, looking for my next leg to book, which I am looking for EK DXB-HKG is 11am the right time to be looking for EK Award seats??

That's the time QF releases reward seats on their own flights - and it is unrelated to the updating of reward availability on other OW airlines.
Also EK is not a OW airline and you therefore can't book any flight on EK metal as part of a OW reward. People sometimes get confused about this because EK is a partner airline for standard classic awards. Suggest you look for CX availability for the DXB - HKG leg

Mixed luck here with CX transits for our upcoming OW Award booking.

BNE-HKG-JFK no problem - other than the 1 hour transit before a 16 hour flight!

CDG-HKG-BNE - could not book this as a transit, so we have a 1 night stopover in HKG.

It can take the system an hour or 2 to reflect availability. Also they can sometimes miss a day and publish 2 days at once.

YMMV

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

A HUGE thank you to everyone on this board who have helped me complete my first One World J Award Booking for 280,000 points. I could not have done it without all the tips and suggestions etc that gave me confidence to give it a go. Plus the very helpful guys at Qantas who took me gently through every step!

So now my husband and I are flying next Sept/Oct..

BNE/HGK with CX
HGK/LHR with CX
LHR/BCN with BA
MUC/LHR with BA
LHR/HGK with BA
HGK/BNE with CX

Our first time flying CX J so looking forward to that experience. We will have to stay over in HK on the way home but that is no hardship!

We have been doing similar flights for years and never thought about the Oneworld Award… always thought of it as a RTW award.

I am happy. Thanks again.

just curious, if you don't mind telling us, what you paid for the fuel surcharges on that ticket?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Ok, so this thread is 271 pages. Most of the information posted back in the first 100 pages is now fairly dated and not relevant, but some of it is, so trying to catch-up means reading the whole thing from top to bottom.

I am willing to earn my stripes by reading through all it... but before I embark on this journey (I might do a TR) is there a concise or shorter summary somewhere already? If not, I might write one as I go.

As soon as I have the final figure I'll post. I forgot to write it down so will now have to wait for it to turn up on the CC.

I agree. Does this forum software allow for Wikis? This would be the perfect thread for it.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi All

This is my first post, been a bit shy, but love reading through the different threads. I have been booking a 280K award since March for a March 2016 take off. My husband, daughter and I are having a gap year. So far I have booked Perth - Hong Kong (stop) - Hong Kong - Baku (Azerbaijan) (stop) - Baku - London (stop) - Oslo - Toronto (stop). I am not sure I have been given the correct information from the Qantas booking centre. Are we allowed another stop before flying home? Maybe Miami to Lima (stop) and then home to Perth via Santiago/Sydney. I know probably not possible to get J , but Premium economy seems possible.

Can you assist with other routes, either from Buenos Aires or Rio and are we under the 35K Miles??? Cheers....

Welcome, ebonyw. You have been sitting in the corner for a very long time!

It would help if you provide your exact routing so that we can help you work out whether you are under 35k miles? For example, I'm happy to be corrected but I don't believe there is a direct oneworld service between Oslo and Toronto. It would be good to also include the carriers you are travelling on.

From what you've provided you are indeed permitted another stop (up to five in total), provided you meet the other criteria.

You can't have premium economy, it's either economy or business or first

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi Danger

Perth - Hong Kong - Cathay, Hong Kong - London Cathay (Transit), London - Baku and back to London on BA. Oslo to Toronto via London (transit) - BA.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

When I plug into the Qantas classic awards booking tool, I put in business and it says the flight to Sydney from Santiago will be in premium economy.

It's because you look at just one segment and J isn't available for the entire journey

if you try to put all your segments together you'll get an error

it really pays off to read all the rules before booking to avoid future disappointments

A OW 280K award is different to a standard classic award in some respects, ebonyw, so sergeyvzn is quite correct in telling you that there is no PE allowed on a OW award - so if there's no J you go straight to Y!

Regarding your route mileage, you can work out the distance at gcmap.com (great circle mapper) - just plug in the airport codes and it will work out the distance for you. Danger's info about there being no direct flights between OSL and YYZ was correct too - you need to fly via either LHR or HEL (both these would be under the 35K mileage limit but going via LHR is the shortest of the 2 options and adds about 600 miles to your trip). Another transit through LHR would be OK because you can up to 2 transits AND a stopover in any one city.

In your case PER - HKG - LHR - GYD - LHR - OSL -LHR - YYZ - MIA - LIM - SCL - SYD - PER would be about 34,238 miles. Via HEL would take it to about 34,521.

A W oneworld award costs 210k... it does exist, just it's difficult to do with the lack of availability in W award seats. If you cannot get J availability, W is permitted.

You’ve raised an interesting point, Madrooster, and one that is worth threshing out to see where the true status quo lies because I’m not sure that your comments specifically address the question at hand. Let me elaborate……

The question is: “If you’re on a 280K (or 420K) award itinerary can you book into PE if there are no J award seats available?” This presupposes that that there are PE classic award seats available on the particular flight segment (i.e. “W” fare bucket code). I think an important distinction needs to be made between this conundrum and your broader comment regarding the availability of a 210K PE OW option generally.

The OW RTW awards this thread is about are officially Zone 10 awards as shown in this Oneworld Classic Award table:
Zone Return Miles Economy Premium
Economy
Business First
1 0-1,200 30,000 45,00060,000 90,000
2 1,201-2,400 40,000 60,00080,000 120,000

4 4,801-7,200 75,000 112,500150,000 225,000
57,201-9,600 85,000 127,500170,000 255,000
6 9,601-11,600 100,000 150,000200,000 300,000
7 11,601-14,000110,000 165,000220,000 330,000

10 19,201-35,000140,000 210,000280,000 420,000

N.B. the link to this table on the QF website does not work ATM – it appears that the IT work experience kids let loose a gremlin with the latest update dated 15/10/15.

Certainly there is a PE award option available, but, as you point out, its usefulness is limited because many flights don’t have a PE cabin. But do you have any evidence or references that this option specifically translates into booking a PE seat if there’s no J available on an individual segment (because my understanding is that it does not)?

The QF Ts & Cs don’t address the specifics regarding travel in lower cabins in the event of there being no award availability for the class of the booking. The closest relevant rules I could find are:

14.1.1 Classic Awards are subject to airline inventory management and availability is limited. Qantas, oneworld Alliance Airlines and Airline Partners (including Jetstar Airlines) limit the number of Classic Award seats available to Members at their absolute discretion………

14.3.8 Not all routes and cabin classes of Airline Partners and oneworld Alliance Airlines are available for Award Flights. Exclusions and limitations may change from time to time. Qantas Loyalty does not guarantee the continued availability of any particular route or cabin class for Awards…………
and:
14.5.6 Where mixed-class travel is booked in a oneworld Award, the whole Itinerary will be calculated using the Points level for the highest class booked.

In the absence of any written rule that says (either explicitly or implicitly) you can (or can’t) book into PE on a J or F ticket the ambiguity is obvious – the QF call centre says you can’t and, having followed this thread for several years, the accepted position of posters on this forum is also that you can’t. It would be good if we could have definitive proof one way or the other. I know the call centre staff are sometimes wrong and could not provide a reference when I enquired specifically about this (a couple of years ago now) the answer I got was that it was “….just QF policy to only book into Y if no J or F was available”.

So please speak up - has anyone been able to book into PE on a J OW ticket?
