Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Will update later, but had a "freak out/trip about to be cancelled" earlier with QF.

short version: booked a segment, but wasn't official. Seats have been cancelled...

Today, booking my next segment, I find the previous segment is gone. Original option was via HKG (day trip to city), but CSR rep found a better flight connection.

Flight is now back to original HGK stop over.

Only 2 more legs to go!

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi
Just wondering if something like this might work . We are based in Sydney but can easily start the trip in Canberra in order to add a domestic trip later in the year.

CBR HKG (stop) (mid September 2017)
HKG - FCO (stop)
LHR. - MCO. (Stop)
JFK - SYD (stop) (mid December )
SYD - PER (stop) (July - august)
PER - SYD (transit only and would drop the last flight)
SYD - CBR

Thanks
no
when you get to Sydney from New York, your 140/280/420 award is over
The rest will have to be a separate award

What makes the trip invalid? Mileage is fine, number of stops is fine, segment count is fine. 2 transits and 1 stop in SYD which is fine. Though they could route CBR-BNE-HKG or CBR-MEL-HKG too.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

:) - anyone else? I am sure I have read of trips being broken up somehow - we just can't take longer than 12 weeks and I would like to make maximum use of the deal.

Is it bad that my concern with this plan would be missing out on lounge access at SYD ??
Is there a lounge in CBR? And would I be entitled to use it given a CBR start would possibly mean an economy seat until the next flight .

Not sure that is exactly correct. You can re enter the country of departure and fly an additional segment, as long as the port of re entry is not the port you departed from.

.. snip ...

CBR HKG (stop) (mid September 2017)
HKG - FCO (stop)
LHR. - MCO. (Stop)
JFK - SYD (stop) (mid December )
SYD - PER (stop) (July - august)
PER - SYD (transit only and would drop the last flight)
SYD - CBR

If CBR-HKG is a direct sector from sept 17 then I don't see a problem. If it ends up CBR-SYD-HKG then the itin will be invalid after the JFK-SYD segment.

Personally I've flown SYD-HKG-(10 or so segments)-HKG-PER-SYD with no problems.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

That's right
the rule says "only one departure from the country of origin"
it means that if you started in Sydney but return to Australia say HKG-ADL-MEL it's fine but you can't stop over in ADL because if it's over 24 hrs in ADL it's a second departure from the country of origin and that's it - can't do it

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

You can break your journey and make two trips out of it, people do it
but it's done outside of Australia and involved buying two positioning flights
do it in NZ and the problem is solved

Ok back to the drawing board.
although I am sure I have read someone starting in Mel returning to Adelaide and having a later trip to Darwin but can't find It t now. I am in the process of reading this entire thread for the second time.

This prices up as 140k points. You just can't depart the country but you can do as many domestics as you like within the country.

Can't depart the country or city of origine more than once

Update: Our itinerary thus far.

1) (U)MEL - SYD - (X)SIN - CMB

2) CMB - DEL

3*) DEL - HKG - JNB (updated)

4**) JNB - LON - (ORD)

Next to book:

**- LON - ORD

5) ORD - LAX - HON

6) HON - SYD - MELB.

Was told my total miles / km was 35,953 miles of 36k!.

Will update later, but had a "freak out/trip about to be cancelled" earlier with QF.

Max allowed is 35,000 miles (56,315km), not 36,000 miles - so you are over the limit

14.5.2 Classic Awards using the oneworld Classic Award table must be no more than a distance of 56,315 kilometres (35,000 miles). Longer journeys must be broken into separate Itineraries.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Ouch, will need to urgently contact them on how we could do this....

Change (5) to: surface sector between ORD - Portland/Origen?

5a) Portland - HON?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Battymum, yes you would be OK if you did your trip to Perth (CBR - PER (stop) - SYD) prior to leaving Oz for the second part of your trip. Your return to SYD would be counted as a stop.

There aren't many direct flights from CBR - PER so J seats are hard to come by, so if you're doing a J award the obvious options would be to transit through MEL or ADL.

Later you could then depart SYD to HKG (stop) with stops also in FCO and MCO. That's your 5 stop limit (I take it you're doing a land leg from MCO - NY).

Can't depart the country or city of origine more than once

These rules also apply to commercial tickets in general.

It's fine for you to quote T&Cs, but given I've priced it up and it prices just fine for ticketing purposes, I'm not sure what point you are trying to prove...

You're making it confusing now that you've pulled PDX out of "left field". How would you get from ORD to PDX - it's a very long way to Oregon if you intend to drive? Would having that land leg really save you the number of miles you need to get under 35K - you'd be replacing ORD - LAX - HON (HNL?) with PDX - HNL but remember that the distance from Chicago to Oregon would still need to be included in the mileage total. I think your line of thinking would just make things worse distance wise.

I presume by HON you mean HNL, in which case you will struggle to get award seats from HNL - SYD.

Personally, if you want to go to HNL I'd suggest you buy a separate return fare from LAX to HNL which would keep that separate to your award ticket. I haven't done the distance calcs for that though so you'd still need to check it on gcmapper.com

Chicago / portland was out of our own cash. Flights were approx $250 per person.

But you do not have too many segments - you have too many miles and paying for ORD - PDX doesn't solve that problem. Even if you pay cash for the flight from ORD - PDX you still have to count the distance between them in your total for your award.
