Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

My QR flight did not get reinstated. We discussed this a few pages back. I don't have much room for extra miles. I'm interested in trying for the JAL flight. How can I get the agent to see it if they say they can't see it?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I had a look at the JAL website and found this: JL017 YVR-NRT, JL 771 NRT-SYD, can Qantas get this one?

My understanding is, yes...they can. I just checked on the BA site and it's there.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Not sure how this happened but I managed to stuff up my beautiful OW ticket. First I had Qatar take back my MEL-BCN flight, I got over that even though we now miss out on flying on Qatar. Our last leg is YVR-MEL and I saw that Qantas was flying YVR-SYD In July 2017 so I was watching for seats to be released. Now I realise that that route finishes on 22 July 2017 and I missed out on the availability. We couldn't find anything in J to get home from YVR. Arggh! As a desperate measure, I took CX from LAX-HKG-MEL which will mean buying a ticket from YVR to LAX and a night in a hotel. Late July next year seems totally booked out. Of course, I will keep checking but so angry with myself for not being more careful.
Does anyone here have any other ideas that would work better around 24 July? I only need one seat.

Yoyo, buying the YVR - LAX ticket is probably quite a reasonable and comparatively inexpensive compromise. CX has a YVR - HKG flight but you would probably have to try for QF from HKG to either MEL or SYD because you will probably find that CX's married segment issue will block you from getting YVR - HKG - MEL/SYD all on CX. Another option would be to fly (if your mileage permits) YVR - JFK and come back through Europe (where there are lots of possibilities) rather than across the Pacific. This might allow you to get that QR flight you wanted by transiting through DOH.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I don't know how many miles you have up your sleeve but what about YVR-MIA/ORD/JFK/DFW/BOS/PHL-DOH-MEL?

errr? you are taking the micky, right? Just take out the superflous ORD-JFK-DFW-BOS-....then it might be slightly realisitic.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

The married segment didn't seem to be a problem as I had a seat booked in CX in June but that was too early for me. That's after a JFK_YVR with CX889.
Fairbasa- thank you for checking that one for me. What am I doing wrong with the BA website? I am logged in but it doesn't seem to work. Do you click on the red button book a reward flight or are you using a different website altogether?

No worries, I know this route because I am planning on taking it about a month after you!

The BA site is pretty average, there's probably a better way...but the way I find the rewards section is:
1. Login up the top
2. In the menu at the top go to Exec Club, then spending avios in the drop down
3. Click the red "Book a reward flights" button half way down the page
4. Enter the itinerary.

To pull up those flights for you I had to search for the legs individually, I.e. YVR-NRT then NRT-SYD.

Also, if you don't already have it...make sure you grab the Oneworld schedule tool. It's absolutely invaluable to me, you rightclick on an airport and click "Destinations" and it shows you every single destination you can fly to from that airport...or you can use it to find routes you can't otherwise find through QF/BA/AA. It's great because it shows EVERY OW flight...rather than just the partial views you get on QF/BA/AA. Obviously you then need to go actually search for award availability on those respective sites, but knowing the theoretically possible flights significantly helps tracking down availability. Get it here.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I'm not sure there is actually a restriction on the number of times you can transit a city.

.

From Qantas.

14.5.4 The following Stopover conditions apply to oneworld Classic Flight Rewards:
(a) up to five free Stopovers are permitted;
(b) additional Stopovers are not permitted;
(c) only one Stopover is permitted in any one city in the Itinerary; and
(d) only two Transfers may be taken at any one city in the Itinerary.

I presume I can stopover in a city but also transit through it?

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Yes, you're essentially correct but the rules also state you can only have one departure from the original city or country of origin. So if you originally departed from say, MEL, you wouldn't be able to transit through say, SYD, if that flight involved a second departure from Oz.

You can have up to 2 transits plus one stopover in any individual city

Cheers answers my question. May have to start my journey in another country so but no big deal in the grand scheme of things. QR availability throwing a spanner in the works and I want to have a plan B in case it all goes wrong.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

re CX married segments

I understand if there is availability SYD-HKG and HKG-YVR that you cannot assume availability SYD-YVR without a break >24H due to married segment rules.

If I input a flight ie. SYD - YVR end to end and it shows availability SYD-HKG-YVR should this be ok to book.

Thanks

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Qantas rang me back and said the LAX option put me 350 miles over the limit. However, I told her about the JAL option and when I fed her the flight numbers she was able to see them suddenly when she couldn't before. I told her we wouldn't be over the limit if they hadn't taken away our Qatar flight. It doesn't matter now as they found that JAL flight which she is apparently booking now but will call me back when it is done.

Funny how that tends to happen :P

I can't knock them, I don't know what the system is like on their end. Glad to hear it's hopefully sorted ;)

It was a / not a -. I.e was listing all the US cities QR fly out of. Not to go through them all.

JL don't use one of the big GDSes as their reservations system (Galileo/Sabre/Amadeus) and their system doesn't always return the right availability if you query for something like SYD-JFK on JL. With JL searching segment by segment tends to yield better results and because they don't use married segment control, it's fine to search that way.

Probably not a big deal to some, but it is to me ! Just booked the first leg of our trip to Europe next year as per the guidance of the AFF tutelage, with special thanks to Travelislife.
The days chosen were a little bit early than originally planned but FOMO (fear of missing out) kicked in especially after I found one of the business seats disappeared when I went to check the dates with my wife!
Oh and a pointer for newbies, I went to the payment stage ie paid for it but it bounced out saying start over - which I laboriously did but thankfuly before I got to the payment stage again , I noticed my points had been reduced. I then checked my emails and found that my booking actually had got through and was paid and confirmed! Could have easily booked a repeat and been none the wiser!
Anyway onwards and upwards!

Hi AFF team,

we booked our return flight SYD-ZRH using points. We leave SYD on QF117 on the 29 SEP in Y (the rest of our flights is on CX, HKG-ZRH-HKG in J, HKG-SYD in Y). I've been checking online for any availability in J that might open up and it opened up on CX110 and CX162. I rang through to QF call centre yesterday, the operator confirmed that there is availability on both flights and tried putting us on CX162 in J but for some reason the booking wouldn't go through. Agent advised that they will send a request for the flights to CX and I will get a call from them once response comes back. Missed the call from the agent earlier today. I just got of the call with the call centre. The agent who I spoke to read the notes on my booking which stated that CX can't assist with our request without any further explanation.I can still see both CX110 and CX162 showing as available in J for 2 pax but the agent kept telling me today that there is nothing available anymore. The only option she offered is putting a request for J upgrade on our existing flight for 54k each which is quite steep. I am ok with flying Y on that leg but would be nice to fly in J give that there is availability. Did anyone had similar experience? Is it just a matter of talking to the right agent? Any hints or tips how this could be sorted would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Maki

This probably isn't the right thread as it doesn't sound like a OneWorld award. In saying that, it sounds like married segments to me. Are you having a stopover in HKG? If no then you require availability for SYD-ZRH (i.e. SYD-HKG-ZRH) as a through booking. Availability only on the SYD-HKG sector isn't enough. If you have got a stopover of >24 hours this shouldn't be an issue and it should be bookable. Similar on the return.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi there

Have been keeping an eye on award availability for BNE-BKK-ICN-Europe (I'm flexible)-MCO-YVR-BNE as I'll shortly be booking a 280K One World business class award. My intended departure date is 2 Sep 2017.

Alas when I logged into QFF today, I noticed there are award seats available until 7 Sep 2017, about a week longer than I thought possible given QF's 353 day advance release policy. Did I get the 353 day period wrong?

Anyway, so I can retain some flexibility for the return leg of the journey, I'm trying to avoid CX for the first leg or two (the award permits only two transits in the same city). I'm hoping one of the experts on here can advise whether it is likely that MH availability for 2 Sep 2017 would be available yet if I call the QF call centre. If not, do you know when it is likely to be available? Do they release seats 353 days ahead of time too?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Cheers

Geoff.

Why don't you use BNE-SIN on QF then SIN-BKK on CX (once daily). MH charges even more fuel fines than QF. That'd then allow you to do either BKK-TYO-ICN or BKK-HKG-ICN on JL or CX respectively.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hmm... Ok, why isn't this working.

This is fine:

SYD-ADL-DOHx-NBOx-LHR-KEFx-LHR-SEAx (own arrangements) SFO-HKG-TPEx-TPE-HKG-SYD

It all prices up at 280k plus about $1500, however when I swap SFO for LAX:

SYD-ADL-DOHx-NBOx-LHR-KEFx-LHR-SEAx (own arrangements) LAX-HKG-TPEx-TPE-HKG-SYD

it prices up to 516,000 points. I add it up as 34000 miles so it's under the 35000 max... any ideas?
