Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

i thought I responded yesterday but it didn't seem to post.

When end I booked my one world award, I booked the Sydney - Santiago flight as soon as I could because I knew there weren't many available. However the rest I just booked when they were all available and pretty much got what I wanted. The 3500 points is the change fee no matter whether you change on the phone or internet. When you change on the phone (which you need to do to add more flights) they also charge you $80 or I think you can pay 8000 points.

Therefore my my advice is do your research as to which routes are hard to get any maybe book those as so as you can but the rest try and book a few together at the same time.

When I booked the 280k point around the world, the agent advised that because the ticket was in Business class the 8000 point fee was waived, still had to pay the 3500 fee.

Tallie, i was going to come back on to say that I did have a recollection that if you were travelling business class one of the fees were removed. My upcoming RTW trip is in economy.

Do you have to use QF on a OW 280k award ?
Or are two non-QF airlines fine ? Eg. MH and QR ?

The rules say no, you do not have to use QF:

14.5.1
A oneworld Award is a Classic Award Itinerary that includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline.

Often it's easier not to use Qantas. I find better J award availability on CX, RJ and BA

I have booked a few of these and trying to find a QF INT flight is hard to manage in my experience.

Bigger problem is avoiding non OW (ie QF partner only) airlines. However with OW expansion getting easier for example QR around Asia / Middle East / Southern Europe.

Love this thread. I must have read it the entire way through two or three times over the last couple of years. Finally used all your thoughtful contributions for some good and booked mum a 70th birthday present she'll never forget. All in J and departing in less than 2 months time! ~$1800 in taxes, but that's what you get going through the big name airports.

SYD>NRT>LHR>JFK>LAX>HKG>SIN>SYD - QF>BA>AA>AA>CX>CX>QF

Thanks for all your help!

I'm thinking of doing a 280k J award in July/August. Is it too late in the piece to even contemplate booking one of these?

The anser to that depends on where you want to go and how much flexibilty you have.

You might start by trying to put an itinerary together online uising the aeard booking tool - that may give you a clue as to availbility.

As you are WP you will have more access than others. If you are flexible with date and route you should find something that suits.

For a J award, on two class AA do you have to book into X rather than P?

In P costs out over 400k but X gives me 280k?

Generally when booking a J award and you include 2 class AA segments you will sit in Y (although I have heard of occasions where is has successfully booked into P).

So where possible on these awards try for a direct transcon 3 class service and you'll sit in J.

I have a similar issue as on a J OWE Award frlying from Washington to Nashville and then onto LA.....all have booked into Y unfortunately because of the 2 class only being available on those routes

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi a few questions is anyone can help please ... We are flying on a OWE Award in J BA from Milan (Linate) to Washington via LHR in July landing and departing Terminal 5 ...we have about 5 hours in Heathrow to kill and will have lounge access being WP's but wanted to know will the luggage be checked all the way through to Washington or do we need to clear customs in London, collect luggage and then re-check?

We also have a few flights then from Washington to Nashville on AA and then onto LA but could only book into Y ( 2 class only available) so I am not sure of the luggage entitlements.

Also for anyone interested I changed some flights yesterday on this trip and the CSR was not going to charge any points penalty ( I was a bit surprised) but called me back to advise because we has changed airport departure points in Italy the tickets had to be reissued so 3500 pp was charged. But no service fee as flying J.....happy with that.

Baggage should interline through LHR.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I am planning a One World trip for 2015, intending to book at an early date, since looking at a fairly involved trip covering Japan, Canada, Europe and Africa.

My query is when arriving at one airport (e.g. Rome) and departing another one (e.g. Warsaw), does it count as one stop or two. I realise I need to add the mileage in-between. Also, is there a limit on number transit stops?

It is counted as one stopover (>24 hours), and a "leg"of your itinerary (hence add in the mileage).

No limit on the number of transits (<24 Hours), per se, but effectively limited by the total mileage of the ticket and the number of flights you have. JV
