Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

Hello. Currently in the middle of an OWA award (so far so good!) However, I'd appreciate some advice...

We are in FRA flying to NRT in J with JAL tomorrow. Just had the 24 notification that I should be able to check in but JAL is not letting me do it online. The system says we have to do it at the counter. They have all the booking details and it all looks fine but I wanted to ask whether this was normal? I am pretty sure I have been able to check in online with other airlines.

Edited to add - the attached image is one of the check-in steps.

Any input is appreciated.

I wasn’t able to do online check in on my non-QF flights on my recent OWA including AA, JL, MH & BA flights.

Can't help with the online check in question but I took that flight in J on a OWA about 3 weeks ago and 'manual' check in and line up took around 5 minutes with baggage so not a lot of time lost there. Security though took around 30 minutes. It wasn't open when we arrived at the lounge (the lounge is after passport control but before security), announcements were made in the lounge about lining up at security a bit earlier once it opened. Other flights were leaving through that area at the same time so it was crowded. There is no priority queue for J class etc (oh the humanity :) ).

The discussion here made me think about a future booking where I am not sure whether to go via a OWA with the usual rules or use airlines which have seats available on QFF ie not subject to a max 318,000 points .

Can someone remind me how Qantas points required are calculated for flights – let's say the flights are BNE-SYD-SIN-LHR-HEL

  • By the individual sector
  • By each flight number ( I know that one of the SYD-LHR options uses the same flight number)
  • By the distance travelled from origin to the first stopover
  • Distance used by QFF is that found on the Great Circle Mapper not the actual flight distance.

Were you trying to check in via Qantas app/website? You need to do OLCI via the operating carriers website.

On my OWA this year I was able to checkin online for BA, AA and AY flights via the BA, AA and AY websites no issue but still went to the desk at airport to get physical boarding passes and check luggage.

Depends on where the stops are - your post has insufficient detail for an answer.

There would be no more than 24 hours between arrival and departures - ie no "stopovers" on the proposed itinerary.
 
Is it normal that the Multi city tool can't find book more than 6 flights at once? i found all flights for itinery in J except the tool decides that 6 is the max and errors if i add a 7th flight.
 
I'm on the phone with an agent atm and she can't seem to start the itinery - would the next best thing to do is book what i can from multicity then call to add the rest of the flights?

Starting airport CGK and she says her system tells it as an invalid starting city.
 
yes, start as much as you can online, then call to add later

You can always ask. But I suspect not. Best of luck with actually booking it. The easy part is done, bring on the hair pulling and useless phone reps

If you are viewing this as one trip, doesn't it need to end where it started? Which would be CGK. Brighter minds will come along and confirm or deny but I have always assumed that.

Thanks for all the answers. I was indeed using the JL check-in system. I just went in again and we have checked in except my wife is 4 rows away from me... 😳 All the other seats are unavailable. ......... Sigh...

Was under the impression the trip didn't need to stop at the start but those notional miles (MEL-CGK) are added to the total miles. However finishing the trip in MEL would be problematic as it has already used as a stopover. Although the trip actually finishes in MEL, it is actually a stopover.

I was under the impression that it would be a transit to end just that we're not taking the transit.

Also we don't need to use MEL as a stop mid trip. Its just there if we can use it for free SC. Could easily stop at SYD and make our way to MEL on any flight.

Edit: Oh you're right the last leg if we don't transit to jakarta is considered a stop. Hmm ill play around with it a bit more.

Could i transit in SYD twice and also do a stopover there?

Don't need to end the trip in the same City but i guess it now uses up a leg.

Booked the first 3 flights of my trip a few months ago. Now to add the middle part as the flights are available. Just a couple of questions if anyone can help.
Can I use a flight which has an AA code but is 'operated by Republic Airways As American Eagle'?
Has anyone ever had an issue where Great Circle Mapper states the route is less than 35k miles but Qantas think it is more. I am 200 miles under on GCM. Don't want to book middle section then find out I can't get home when I try to add the last flights in 5 weeks.

Yes, this is quite common I think. 200 miles is well within the margin of error so you might have a problem waiting for you.
