Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Cheers! (Am I correct in assuming AAnytime would earn both miles and EQM?)

No, they don't.
AFAIK QFF is the only program where you can redeem award tickets that subsequently earn miles for points earning and crediting toward status.

Had another thought ablecookie.............an alternative to your YVR - DFW - MIA - BSB leg might be to fly CX from YVR - JFK and then transit JFK - GIG (RIO) with AA or TAM. That way you would only have 2 flights instead of 3 to get you to Sth America and you would readily get J seats on the YVR - JFK flight (which you're unlikely to get for YVR - DFW). You also have the option of 2 airlines instead of just AA for the JFK - GIG flight which both have J seats (DFW - MIA would be Y only). Of course that gets you to Rio instead of BSB but you could then include a return trip to BSB from RIO quite easily.

ATM your itinerary shows a stop-over in Brasilia and only a transit in RIO - is that a mistake or were you really not going to check out RIO? If you flew into RIO from NY, you could have a combined stop-over in BSB and Rio - all you'd have to do is buy a cheap one way fare (either RIO - BSB or BSB - RIO) and the other one could be included in your OW award ticket.

Once back in RIO you can continue on to MAD as originally intended.

NO - even though they book into the F, J and Y fare buckets they are not eligible for earn with AAdvantage.

But that's not to say that another program may credit them, right? ;)

No. No other FF program will credit you for flights in these booking classes. They don't earn any points

Thanks again for your comment and suggestion.

One issue is I run out of permitted stopovers, so have to use "under 24 hrs" rule to see as much RIO in a day!

Will definitely have a look at your suggested routing as well as the idea of paying for a short leg myself.

Have been doing dummy runs. Found there's plenty of JJ award seats available, so going to SA via States is a breeze, possibly being a new Oneworld member, not being taken up much yet?

The other thing is. noticed there's direct MIA-BSB flights this year, but after June 15, it has to route through RIO, which blows my total 35,000 miles! Will wait a while to see the issue may be post-June 15 timetable not completed.

Just did a quick calc, unfortunately YVR-JFK-GIG blows out my miles, even taking out the RIO-BSB leg! 9,420 miles instead of 7052 via DFW-MIA.

I am sailing very close to the 35,000 limit.

If such occurred I would not expect it to be revealed on a public forum.

I think your calculations are amiss, ablecookie. YVR – JFK is 2449 miles and JFK – GIG is 4786 miles – total is 7235 miles, not 9420. Flying YVR – DFW – MIA – GIG is 7037 miles, which is only about 200 miles shorter than flying via JFK.

You would be just a bit short of miles if you included either RIO – BSB or BSB – RIO in your OW itinerary but you’d be under 35,000 miles if you bought a return ticket RIO – BSB (which would mean that that part of your trip would be isolated from your OW distance calculations). I saw TAM flights on routehappy at $152 pp return. That’s cheap and very do-able I reckon………..and you get to fly J all the way from YVR to GIG.

And you can spend as much time as you like in both BSB and RIO and it still counts as only one stop-over!

OK thanks - sorry out of action for a week due to flu. My tours have been confirmed as has my career break leave. Just checking is it the 131313 number that I call to do the multi-city award booking?

For award flights the number is 13 11 31.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi vetrade. well extremely interesting phone call with Qantas where I was complimented on my skills in selecting flights - apologies but I took the praise and neglected to mention the help provided by your good self and others on this forum! I asked the direct question "Can you see flights that I cannot?" and Karen answered "No I can't". I then ran through all the options that I'd been able to enter and get to the Check / Book stage using the multi-city 5 stop award booking. She tried to find a few other options but they all involved using paid flights other than awards - in some cases this did actually reduce my miles slightly but it was always a bad trade-off. She told me quite bluntly "Don't book over the phone with me, you'll be wasting 3,500 points for something you now obviously have figured out how to do yourself. Save those points for any changes you may need to do later". I was quite surprised by her frankness and also that, contrary to what I've read here, there are no flights other than what I've already spotted myself. Am I being told porkie pies here?

Anyway I found a way to get from MEX-LIM and then from La Paz (LPB) to LHR. Unfortunately New York has had to be left out this time - it was always going to be a very rushed visit there anyway so it'll have to be in a few years instead. Here's the 33,531 mile plan that I've booked and confirmed starting 1st February and ending 30th July WooHoo! ...

MEL-SYD-DFW-MEX
MEX-MIA-LIM
LPB-MIA-LHR
LHR-DMK
DMK-HKG
HKG-MEL

there will be several separate paid flights - in particular LHR-CAI - I was able to find ways to fit that into an award booking but it al;ways ended up costing me more for a flight from/to somewhere else

I'm quite happy with the results and am very grateful to you in particular for your advice.
thanks again, cheers Dave

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi djmalc, we are heading off on a 280K award we booked a year ago (even booking a year ahead there were some sectors we couldn't get two seats on the same, or in J).... and had to do a phone booking to get out LAN flights as the online engine kept returning an error and couldn't find any LAN flights (ever). We only knew they were there as they showed up on BA's executive FF website. Whether its any better now I don't know, but we got stuck with 2 x 3,500 booking fees, even though you couldn't book the flights online. Happy Travels!

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi benz, yep I actually asked her specifically about LAN flights but she told me that all award seats on those flights had been booked already. I'm a bit confused about this though - I can see some AA flights available as AAMIles bookings on the AA website - but these flights don't show up on Qantas either and she said those seats had also already been booked. Even if there were some other options that she's mislead me on, it has actually been immensely satisfying doing this myself and I still believe I've got good value. I hope your trip goes smoothly benz - Happy Travels to you and your partner too!

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Thank you again for the wealth of info in this thread.

I intend somehow to reduce my QFF points holding by booking a OneWorld Award.

My wife and I really want to go to South America . I recognise the difficulties mentioned already with partner availability.

I have looked at lots of segments that involve AA flights and at best they offer 1 only business or first class seat plus usually multiple coach ones.

If I were to book up one J award seat and one Y and another J seat came up later, and my whole itinerary is business class , am I able to get QFF to change the Y seat to J?

I'm guessing I am dreaming.

Both your wife's and yours itineraries must be in J (280 K) to realise this scenario - for example you get a J seat booked on the Miami-San Paulo sector and your wife is in Y on the same flight, a month later a second J seat opens up (a miracle:)) - you call Qantas and change your wife's seat from Y to J. Everyone is happy including Qantas charging you 3500 points for the change. It isn't completely impossible
You should also think outside the square and entertain an idea of getting to South America via Middle East flying Qatar. They fly to Buenos Aires and San Paulo and their J availability is better than LAN's from Auatralia or American Airlines' from the USA

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi, calling experienced travelers for advice and help.

After much research for our 280000 trip, we came to the following plan for traveling from Mid July to early Sept.

PER-DOH-TXL-KRK
KRK-TLS land sector
TLS-MAD-JFK-YVR
YVR-NRT
NRT-KIX land sector
KIX-HKG-BKK
BKK-KUL-PER

Total of 34,200 miles, 5 stopovers and 8 transits, some o/n but within the 24 hrs limit.

Problem is with some of the latter sectors on AA and JL with window of 330 days, I cannot book till end of Sept. Is that leaving it too late?

Should I book earlier with "moved forward dates" and then pay the extra points to change over?

Or any other strategy that might help?

Any help will be appreciated.
