I was caught out on an International flight and I am sure it was something like 24 hours before departure that it went to the airport so couldn't select a seat on check-in. I usually select my seat as soon as the flight is ticketed. For those without the ability to select seats early Qantas allow seat selection from 90 hours before departure.Check-in with whatever seats were selected beforehand, then open the in-app boarding pass after completed and there is a view/change seats option, there. It's also accessible in the manage booking area. Depending on flight and operations, that option is possible right up until check-in closes, but for some flights it will be moved to airport control (not that often for mainline services).
