Oneworld separate ticket interline changes

Bugger!

However my earlier question posed with regard to QF remains - Does this apply to bookings made prior to the policy change?

Much as I would like to, I can find nothing to suggest otherwise. :(

I do think that this will change the travel bookings patterns of lots of us - and others - who previously booked long haul flights well in advance, then added on shorter connecting flights, as plans firmed up. Certainly, in my case, I stuck with OneWorld for connecting flights, wherever possible, for all the obvious reasons including checking bags right through.

That will definitely change now, as we will often need an overnight stay before proceeding, and that means much more freedom of choice - particularly for those with status in more than one Alliance.

Interesting times!:)

Exactly! Airlines have become extremely adept at shooting themselves in the foot.

Facing up to this hurdle later on in the current trip.
Have factored in enough time - but that doesn't get around the likely impossibility of re-checking bags and using the transit time to do something interesting.

Not a happy prospect to be lumbered with bags during a long transit. :(
Will report back in a couple of weeks. (All interim flights fit the eligibility criteria or are point-to-point.)

What's the routing?

Very upsetting... I was as ready as I could be after reading the initial news to deal with a connection from QF J > AA F (SYD-xDFW-DCA - on separate tickets) in late September with SWMBO, our 5 month old son and all the 'stuff' that we'll be dragging along with us, but was somewhat calmed by the fact that AA was indicating that they would still check through to QF in the reverse, to get us home... until now. Truly disappointing for us that this benefit has been taken away from the OW alliance.

Cheers,
Matt.

That has changed when I checked today.

Separate PNRs on OW - QF will not check through or issue BPs.

Pure chance that my next LAX stop would have a 4 hr buffer, just pure chance !

As of today, QF still says it will through check bags on separate tickets provided you are connecting to OW, QF or EK: https://qantas.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6638

I would screenshot that page if necessary just in case you have an existing set of tickets and there is a discrete policy change in the future (all existing sets of tickets should honour the conditions in effect at the time of booking)

I have edited my post.

The link is here.

OK - so that's the Qantas website.
Worth pointing out that QF -> OW has, since about 1 week after the OW policy change, been that they would not be interlining on separate PNRs from Sep 1.
Nothing recently changed there (that I can see).

The latest posts have all been relating to AA now falling into line when they initially stated there would be no change.

Regards,

BD

One important point from the AA that differs from perhaps QF is this point:

When issuing separate tickets, whether in the same PNR/booking or not, it is important your customer beinformed that American is unable to ‘through-check' bags with 2 separate tickets if they are traveling on American and non-oneworld carriers.

That is different from QF's policy, which seems to still allow through checking of luggage with respect to non-alliance partners if they are on the same PNR, irrespective of being on the same ticket. I know in my previous job when I used to travel to the US semi-regularly for business, it was very common when coming back from the US to connect from AA to SQ, all in the same PNR but different tickets, that would seem to be closed off now as an option.

The good thing about AA is I guess as long as you can manage your LAGS, you can take luggage on board that in most places in the world you would be forced to check in :p

Which begs the question: what is "enough time"? Do you allow, say, three hours? And then during winter add another one. And then if it's LHR or JFK add a whole nother day? How does one "allow enough time" for delays? I doubt an airline - Qantas included - will look after you if you allow three hours in MEL after DXB-SYD for a separate ticket on NZ to Auckland, only to be delayed six hours because you've been diverted to SYD or BNE on account of fog.

It's no longer one world, apparently.

On arrival in DFW it's not so much a big deal as you'll have your bags with you after customs so just recheck at the checkin area outside where you would've had to drop bags off anyway before going through TSA.

The return journey is the real PITA as previously you would've just checked in at DCA and got both AA and QF boarding passes and seen the bags in SYD.

What OW airlines probably haven't realized is they are doubling their workload as QF will now need to use their staff to check pax in at DFW for QF8 where the pax is inbound on AA on a separate ticket.

It's a bummer for pax who are NB or no status as previously AA would have honoured the QF 2 piece allowance when checking from AA to QF so now pax will need to pay for luggage eg from DCA to DFW, reclaim it then checkin again from scratch at QF.

The whole process has now become the reverse of seamless so I'm at a loss to the reason why airlines pay millions of dollars to belong to an alliance? Just what are they getting for the money?

Exactly!
It would be interesting to hear the QF rationale on this.
Calling Red Roo.....:)

Just need to plan better or learn to beg. Here's a snippet of upcoming trip

PG CNX-BKK revenue booking
CX BKK-HKG-TPE revenue booking
CX TPE-HKG award booking
QF HKG-SYD-BNE award booking

and I definitely not going hand luggage only. Golf clubs refuse to be left behind....

Well with all these "full service" carriers shunning the idea of through checking baggage to separate tickets, even within an alliance, one contribution to flyertalk really makes you wonder what is happening in the airline world:

Just thought I'd post an update to this that I got my bags interlined between Jetstar and UA on separate itineraries
smile.gif

This was a 3K flight PEN-SIN and separately booked UA flight SIN-NRT. The lines between LCC and full service seem increasingly blurred....

more info on AA changes...seems they will make concessions for award mixed with revenue tickets

Interesting comment within that article:

although I’m not sure how they can retroactively apply it to tickets purchased before the new policy was implemented.

If I had the time between now and my flight, I'd be inclined to challenge the airlines at the ombudsmen level. As far as I am aware, there has been no general announcement of the change, and certainly not to pax who may be holding tickets that could be affected.
