Oneworld separate ticket interline changes

Have always found the rules never rigorously applied. Checkin QF in SYD not long ago, QF to HKG, ET to ADD, separate PNRs, lady was happy to through check bags. This was an anomaly. Usually get knocked back.

HKG transfer desk not an inspiring place to while away hours, you can get duty free but not coffee . Last time I had a 6 hour layover in HKG without an onward BP (Feb) I just caught MTR to Kowloon, checked in there, back at HKG in an hour. Sure beats sitting at transfer desk for 3 hours.

This is all very interesting. It certainly seems from the link that they should do it.

A few points on the booking that might make things better/worse:

- I am in paid QF J
- I am WP

BUT

- I am going MEL-BNE-HKG (for bonus DSC's!) so will be checking in at MEL Domestic. That may make things better or worse depending on the staff experience.

I'm now very much hoping they do as the thought of going upstairs and not being able to check in for the BA flight for a couple of hours is a painful prospect, thinking of time I could be spending in the Pier!

How long is your layover at BNE. If you get refused at MEL and you have some buffer, you could ask them not to check your bags through to HKG and you can try again at BNE..

Bit painful to lug bags DOM to INT in Brisbane if denied in MEL. If you are going to lug bags on the train, probably better on the MTR to Kowloon for the in-town checking, and then back to the airport - or a bit of time in town.....

DOM to INT at BNE is 5-10 minutes on the bus from what I recall?

HKIA to Kowloon and back takes over an hour and costs $35 AUD...

And you may still end up with another "No" in BNE after taking the luggage for a stroll.

In which case you can spend an hour on the train in Hong Kong to check-in at Kowloon. Unless you've packed half the house I don't see the BNE transfer being so difficult..

Well I'm sitting on Wifi aboard the first leg to Brisbane and pleased to report the system worked as it should.

The DOM check in agent asked where I was going and when I said "initially Brisbane and Hong Kong but then onto London and Frankfurt" and she immediately said that she wouldn't be able to check me through. "It's an award booking though" is all I said and she clearly recognised this changed the game. She was very willing to try. She did say the onward journey didn't show on her system and she required a look at my app. A quick phone call to a supervisor to work out some things including getting them to check the onward PNR to see it was a reward booking and soon I was on my way with bag tagged the whole way and boarding passes for the onward flights.

Very pleased!

QFflyermelbourne, were the BA flights from HKG a QFF award booking?

I have done exactly that previously but QF will not check through luggage on separate PNR, even with that exemption for award/revenue combination and even showing a printed copy of that webpage.

Assuming the award is a QF or AA issued award, you're better off just getting the paid ticket and award ticket issued in the same PNR.

I'm no expert on AY specifically (never flew them!) but their policy is here.

If I'm reading this correctly, you will be fine so long as both ticket numbers start with 105-

We bolted on a QFF J award booking on AY FRA-HEL to our AY paid booking HEL-HKG-BNE. The award was of course issued on 081- number, the other on 105-, different PNRs. AY checkin agent at FRA just asked if we had an onward booking, and was happy to through check bags and issue all the BPs.

Cheers skip

FRA/BNE fares on AY are usually a similar base fare as HEL/BNE. You'd potentially have been better off saving the points...

Change of plans. AY couldn’t find seats ex FRA (presumably seats in the right bucket) when we queried altering our original booking. We couldda made a separate paid booking on the day for €€€€€. Burning QF points was the value option for the tack-on.
