Optus Outage - How is it affecting you?

Yeah I think the absolute statements before we’re obviously off the mark. You would’ve noticed the goalposts moving.

Perhaps perversely, I’m looking at getting a Optus network Sim in case of a similar outage by Telstra. Do you know of a product similar to your Boost but for Optus or others on their network?
Well I did actually have to recharge it once I'd bought it 😉 but that spoils the story.
I'm switching to Boost but Mrs D will keep her Optus (prepaid) service (so we have that diversity). But Mrs D. now has an activated Boost Sim with no recharge on it as well, and if the time comes to use it, we will add some juice to it. The SIM has a 6 month expiry date on it but for $2, cheap to replace and keep on stand by. Dual SIM moto phones are great.

So I've just asked Optus for a refund of the dongle we needed to buy yesterday to keep business zoom appointments. Obviously a Sorry but not Sorry response but wait, we will offer customers (something we can think of when our boffins have a round table think tank) to satisfy the morons.

I'd taken screenshots or photos of everything that happened yesterday with regards to new purchase so lodged a TIO complaint.

Optus is terrible for the most part - mobile coverage issues aside, their website for log in/billing is always so slow and buggy and the app horrendous (but I guess after recent updates the Telstra app is not much better). Allegations from Whirlpool suggest the cost cutting from the SingTel slashers over the years has been somewhat ruthless. The fact that it took years! for them to enable visual voicemail after it became available on Voda/Telstra services just says it all...

I will say that ironically Optus kept us going during the Telstra outages of 2017/18 and even earlier this year during another outrage, so it does pay to have services with both networks. No network is 100%.

Remember when Jetstar were affected by a Telstra outage: https://www.news.com.au/technology/...s/news-story/112e272a6935ae0fba9ddc4b0f88c9b2.

Oh the App. I logged in this morning then wanted to start a chat. Clicked chat and I had to log in again even though you can only chat when logged in. Rinse and repeat. It's the most useless app ever.

All 3 major telcos (and many of their low cost resellers) offer low cost prepaid Sims for $2 (although you sometimes get for free). Boost equivalents on Optus network are Amaysim or Woolworths mobile.

I never bother with the app, easier to view bill and update credit card details via the website.

So they have posted the compensation, and as expected it is extra data which cost them nothing. Given I dont even use all the data I alredy have this is useless. Would rather had a $5 credit to my account.

And very much a slap in the face for businesses who lost business through inability to process payments etc.

Mobile and Tablet customers - To thank you for your patience, we are providing customers on eligible plans at least 200GB of extra data, so you can connect more during the upcoming summer.

Prepaid customers - To thank you for your patience, we’re giving customers on eligible Prepaid plans unlimited data on the weekend for the rest of the year, so you can connect to more of what you love. Unlimited data will be applied automatically to your service starting from next weekend, 18 November.

Business customers - All businesses are unique and have been impacted in different ways and we’re here to help. We know this is a busy time of the year for you and your business, so we are providing at least 200GB of extra data for each eligible mobile service on your account.

Looks like it is big T but not 5G
They currently say "parts of the Telstra network" to paraphrase - AFAIK Boost is the only virtual operator with access to the full Telstra network/coverage at the moment. My 24 hour old Boost service certainly has 5G connectivity.

Boost pricing is similar to Aldi?

Actually there is 300 dollar 12 month for 260
Gig
Yes. I just bought the $35 for 50GB to test it because last time I tried the Telstra network it turned out Optus had better coverage /network speed on offer in this area. Telstra had a seriously rate limited 4G offering compared to Optus at that time.

Extra data is useless for those in higher dollar amount plans (who don’t come close to using the allocated amount each month.) If anything, service will deteriorate as those on cheaper plans have extra data and use up more of the shared bandwidth.

Once my main workplace shifts next year and I’m no longer in a Telstra black spot, I will look at shifting. (Telstra have the contract for work mobiles, but no reception in the building. Optus have a tower on the roof!)

I received the "We’re very sorry for the outage" email from Optus this morning offering at least 200GB of extra data
