Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Greens aren't selling out "on a core party platform" as the existing legislation (which they have supported) brings in a floating price in 2015.
Three years ago they supported a change from nothing per tonne to about $24 per tonne, with the expectation that a floating price would see it at about that level or higher.

Green wet dream.

They aren't going to turn around and vote to accept a fraction of that price one day sooner than they have to. Not without something really juicy to compensate. What would you set as a fair price for a year of emissions?

Nevertheless, the Greens are needed to support Rudd on this. He can't do it without them, they are saying, "Up yours, Ruddy," and there's not one thing he can do about it besides bend over before them. Why is he trying to pretend otherwise?

No. But that seat on the security council gives great access to the top to lobby for change. Connections and influence that allow us to start a discussion at the very least.

Pretty expensive seat......total waste of money.

Well I guess there is a way to stem the tide. Show the refugees Australia is a less desirable place than the one they are fleeing.

How does Abbott intend to stem the tide?

Probably the same way as last time, but surely the real point is why did the Australian public allow themselves to be conned by Kev07 in the first place?
And a fair chunk seem to be wanting more of the same.........says a lot about the average IQ of the electorate :-)

Oh drsmithy will be all over you like a rash for that comment; he's not a big fan of sweeping generalizations lol

Personally I agree though

Frankly the general public can be incredibly stupid when thinking like a mob. Heck they even voted Howard in a few times and bayed for the blood of Gillard wanting Rudd. Now they've got him they're starting to bay for Abbott's blood because they want Turnbull.

Insert face palm emoticon.

No - the real point is that "the same way as last time" does not seem to be materially different to the policies and practices today. But if I have got that wrong I would be happy to hear otherwise ...... Skyring couldn't tell me the details the last time I asked.

And if you are impuning that Ozzies are sub-par in the intelligence stakes, then I will take that as a comment.

42-58% two party ...

"With Mr Abbott in charge, the Coalition lead ... 51 to 49 per cent."

I like Turnbull he's obviously a very good businessman and he's the only politician to make it onto the BRW 200 rich list (which is relevant because it shows he can manage money effectively). He's certainly more intelligent than TA I think he'd do a better job of running the country than he did in opposition.

I'm still not so sure they'll ditch TA though

Because of a change dependent on Labor winning the next election ?

Doesn't even pass the laugh test.

Either your "friend" is lying to you, or his boss is lying to him.

Read the front page of today's West Australian.

Isn't the 2.7% for inflation adjusted rents? The nominal rents did rise over 25% over that 2 year period.
Rents rose in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Canberra, and fell in Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart.

Clearly removing negative gearing did not cause rents to increase.

Anyway, you don't need detailed analysis to debunk the idea that negative gearing helps property affordability, you just need to look at the massive increase in negative gearing claims amidst one of the least affordable real estate markets on the planet.

So it looks like public servants are the greatest tax rorters-to use the words of some of the regular posters here-
A survey of 100,000 novated leasing contracts by the Australian Salary Packaging Industry Association found state and Federal Government public servants represent the largest portion of novated leasing business (33 per cent) ahead of those in charities and public health (28 per cent), police and teachers (21 per cent) and the private sector (18 per cent).

Maybe it is a rort after all. ;)

It shows he can manage business effectively.

That's not the same thing as managing a country.

Turnbull says mostly the right things (when he's allowed to), but his history at Goldman Sachs is enough to give me serious pause.

Doesn't seem all that surprising. It's been a perk of public service jobs for aaaaages, but only open to any Tom, Dick, or Harry, who wants to sign up for a relatively short period.

Quoting myself seems a little weird but re job losses at Car Leasing companies.

FBT changes start to bite - The West Australian
I'm still waiting to hear someone explain why taxpayers should be shoring up completely unproductive businesses that are facilitating and dependent on what is, in all but name, tax evasion.

Probably one of the larger hypocrites here would have to be Joe "end entitlements" Hockey. Though of course we all know when a conservative says "entitlements" what they really mean is "assistance for the poor".
