It seems preferences in the House of Reps saves a few souls who may otherwise get the boot. I'm always amazed to see how low the vote may be for a particular candidate (Lab or Lib) and when Anthony Green pulls up the magic preference figure someone who was miles behind suddenly is dead even or ahead. In this election I assume Labor with its record low vote survived better (as in not losing another 20 seats) due to Green preferences in the main.

I'm not sure I like it but then there are faults with the first past the post system as well.

Apparently one of the new minor party senators released a tweet expressing their view the Dubya ordered 911.

I think 1st past the post is the go as a large majority of candidates have no chance of ever being elected yet pass votes on to various parties, and those voted in can get things done.

First past the post is unfair as it can elect a person who does not represent the majority. Preferential results picks the candidate who is most preferred by the majority.

There also seems to be a bit of confusion between senate voting, where preferences are very important and HoR voting.

Maybe not the place for this but I can't think of where to post it...

Apparently Julia has seperated from Tim and now has another fella. Anything to do with the election?

Perhaps we need a rumour and gossip thread.

Well, I know where she is living in Adelaide as she bought an acquaintance's home. Seems a little too quick after any separation though.

FWIW i think preferential voting works great in the House of Reps where you just number the boxes yourself.

In the Senate, the problem is not preferential voting it's that the preferences aren't easy to do yourself and the way the parties allocate them aren't transparent.

Interesting washup. The ALP did pretty well in the end. All the betting suggested 91-100 seats for the Coalition and 51-60 for the ALP. At this stage, the Coalition is unlikely to reach 91 and the ALP have 60 in their sights, so they have done better than the majority of people expected. With the Senate now certain not to be a Coalition majority, the country is in a good place overall. And the ALP have the chance to rebuild from scratch, which is essential going forward to provide a viable alternative. As someone who doesn't really care what happens with the caveat that exteme landslides are never positive, I think the result is a positive one overall.

Except that the primary vote for Labor is the lowest in a 100 years. They've a lot of ground to make up for with their core group of supporters.

But a do agree a landslide doesn't make for good government.

How many shares are required in QF to get CL status?

Wrong post wrong subject must be me getting use to iPhone app.

Yes 1-6 on the green paper was fine but 1-120+ on the meter wide paper full of parties I've never heard of was a big ask

I've always wondered why there isn't three options for preferential voting in the senate - the two current options (1 above the line, or 1-xx_ below the line) PLUS the ability to number of preference order above the line, so you only have to number 1-20 instead of 1-100).

Antony Green's advice works best here. Vote for the top 10 people you want to get in first and then for the rest.

Or if this elections experience is anything to go by (take pleasure in) starting in reverse order and put the people you least want to get in last and then number the rest. ;)

Or a combination of both. I always had to put Flo last and cory bernardi has taken that role on now.

Having been a scrutineer I can tell you there are many who cannot number a senate paper beyond 1 to 20. Do not over estimate the voters.
