hi

Just wondering if anyone had used packing cubes - like the ones sold by eagle creek and a few others. I am thinking they might be a good way to organise my luggage a bit more efficiantly and was wondering if anyone had any feedback or brand recommendations?

I use a couple - tend to do "main" clothes in one (shirts, skirts, shorts etc) and "accessory" clothes in the other (underwear, nightwear, togs etc). Keeps things nice and neat :)

I can't imagine different brands would matter one iota. I use some from Kathmandu, but they're probably all much the same.

Packing cubes changed my life! :-)
In all seriousness I would not travel without them now. I have a whole lot of Muji ones. Nothing fancy but different sizes that I can mix and match depending on which suitcase I'm using. These have a mesh top so I can see whats inside. They prevent the scrabbling through the suitcase looking for something and keep like with like or whatever system works for you. They make unpacking easy. If I'm at one location for more than a couple if days I just throw the cubes into some drawers.
Cheers

I am a fan of them being the wearer of a lot of black clothes! I separate the clothes by type into separate cubes. I just use the Kathmandu ones.

I also use 2 extra small ones in my hand luggage. One that holds my bag of liquids and other toiletries etc. the other I use for my plane items - so things like my fluffy socks, a pen, eye mask, tissues, some painkillers, a book, some sweets etc. So when I board I take that out and stash it at my seat and put my hand luggage away as everything I will need is in the cube.

To those that use them,

Do you employ them when travelling HLO?

Absolutely - 2 skinny ones (say 15x40cm) lengthways in my rollaboard. Toiletry bag (similar size) makes up 3 across. Still have a layer for shoes, electronics, reading material etc.

I love them and pack as much as I can into them. Makes unpacking a breeze. I roll most items and they don't crease.

Yes I have been using the Kathmandu ones (bought only when on sales as Kat are otherwise expensive) for years.

I use different colors so I know at a glance were I can find want I want: shirts ; pants ; socks & jocks : jackets & windcheaters etc. Use a separate one for adapters & cables etc.
If staying somewhere long enough to use draws...you just move the whole cube over...and so packing/unpacking is a breeze.

I travel HLO and I am very happy with my Eagle Creek cubes. I bought a whole range of sizes when I was in the US a few years ago and now I just lay out what I need to take and then choose the most appropriate packing cubes. I use my double sided one the most.

I travel with a Red Oxx Sky Train and this bag has no dividers inside each zippered compartment so you pretty much need something to keep your bits and pieces together otherwise they just jumble up into a big mess in your bag.

Katmandu have them and they are pretty reasonably priced I thik I got mine on sale though. I've seen them on Amazon but also some of the specialist travel stores have them. There's a travel light store in Brighton (MEL) which has all that sort of stuff. I love mine, being a pack rat they are great at keeping things corralled.

Not quite the packing cubes, but part of the Eagle Creek "Pack It" range, is the tri-fold garment bag I've been using the past few trips. I'v had to put my clothes in this as the roller bag is full of cough I need to deliver training.

This is the tri-fold garment bag closed up

This is the same bag opened up, I've used it with four shirts and two pants and its closed up quite nicely.

Same Bag now opened up. The frame is rigid, it can't be folded up to put back into the roller bag once all my training material is gone (d'oh). Perhaps after some more use i may be a bit more brute with it and see it if closes up.

Here it is in comparison to a standard cabin sized roller bag

And finally, as suggested by my wife. Rather than carrying it, it actually fits very nicely slid down onto the extended handle bar of the roller bag.

Have used it now with QF, MH and CX (all in J though) and have not had any issues with the two bags above, plus a small shoulder messenger bag for laptop/notebook etc.

Thanks for the info everyone, I will have to check out the sizings of them next time I am home and work out what will work best for me.

When I decided to start using packing cubes I was appalled at how expensive they were for something that is just nylon a zipper and some mesh. The Muji ones I found were the cheapest out there and I think maybe also the lightest. These are the ones I have - LIGHT & SMART- Packing Cubes
I dont think there are any Muji stores in Australia but if you travel in Asia they are everywhere!

Cheers

I second the kathmandu packing cubes. They are very robust and a great deal is you pick up the special offers like they have at the moment. Very handy for packing outfits together eg other half had a funeral to attend and did not have a lot of time between other travel commitments, packed each outfit, labeled bag with some masking tape and it made things run far smoother. Also good to pack each individuals clothes in when sharing a suitcase or keeping things like all the kid lets pjs together.

I also bought some from ebags in the US and needless to say they are cheaper. I have different sizes for different things. One for all the techno cords and chargers. One or two for toiletries. One for undies. One for t shirts. One for long pants. One for dresses. One for jewellery items. Mostly I don't even unpack them. I have quite a few. :).

I use them for HLO and non-HLO travel. I roll all the more casual clothes and it is amazing how you can keep squishing one more thing into a packing cube then zip it shut to compress it. Mine are Kathmandu (when they had two for the price of one or something) and ebags. I prefer the ebags ones but only slightly. When we went to HKG last month I used one that was about a quarter of the size of my roll aboard and packed it full of all my clothes. Shoes were in another the same size in the other half of the bag with underwear squished in around them. On top was my toiletry bag, which is large but very flat (also ebags) and some odds and ends. In my large messenger bag I had one for my plane things, as someone mentioned above. Socks, iPad charger, some of the items from my liquids bag once I was through security, my change of clothes etc. Husband had, as well as packing cubes for clothes, one for all the bits and pieces - adapters, chargers, cords, my car keys (once I had parked at the airport). Of course, that was the one that Mr Security decided he needed to inspect at CBR airport as we left :) But it was easy to pull out the other packing cubes and put them aside so he could concentrate on the one that seemed to have a weapon in it (joking!)
