Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Wednesday 2 November – Lodged at regular suburban Sydney Post Office
Thursday 3 November – Status updated to 'Lodged'
Friday 4 November – Status updated to 'Under Assessment'
Friday 4 November 9pm – Status updated to 'Passport Issued'. Email with AusPost tracking number for delivery.

Didn't pay priority, just a standard Adult renewal.

I was caught up in the Optus data breach, and answered accordingly on the application.
Not sure if the passport office is giving them priority?
Yay, arrived today.

Wednesday 9 November – Passport delivered.

That makes it a 7 day turnaround from lodgement to delivery.

Again, was just a regular renewal without paying for priority or any travel dates – *but* it was exposed in the Optus data breach so not sure if that automatically gave it priority.

And it is an R series :-)

Partner received both email and SMS on Monday saying his passport was expiring soon. Six months to the day from expiry date. Mine expires the day before. Nothing. Hopefully this two week timeframe continues next year so that way can leave renewal to early April.

Applied for 2 passports 5 weeks ago. 1 arrived today and the other after 3 weeks.

my missus decided to apply for a new passport today. Fingers crossed it takes less than 6weeks. Will update back
She just got an email update saying the passport is on the way. This is 10 days from submitting at the local post office

Passport issued! 6 weeks to the day. Need to collect in person as I'm flying out Tuesday night.
Some observations
I had to ring twice - both times answered within 2 minutes and both very helpful staff
First question was "When did you apply and when are you flying?" The lady did a calendar calculation to make sure it was more than 6 weeks and then escalated my processing. I got the impression that they are making sure that they keep to their side of the bargain re the 6 week minimum.
In short - I believe that the 6 week turnaround is all but guaranteed.
Still, very disappointing to learn that some lucky people got a passport in a week!! A bit of consistency would be nice
And, NEXT time I will pay the $200extra - I've already lost that much on the increased prices in Europe, trains, internal flights etc, that I couldn't book in advance!

As I mentioned earlier I lodged 2 together in October. One took 3 weeks, the other 5 weeks The numbers were a long way apart so they probably just headed to 2 different piles.
Earlier this year I paid express for one that was needed in December. I am sure it was a waste of money but the next day it was reported that people were waiting 15 weeks which would have been cutting it fine, though I can see they would have expedited it with a call after 6 weeks. It was worth it not to have the stress though.

My son collected passport on my behalf yesterday. Didn't need appointment but the door guide pointed him to the collection queue rather than the passport ordering queue. Took about 30 mins due to large number of people. Needed a letter from me and his photo id. I used the B11 webform from the passport office website.

Submitted my standard renewal application Wednesday 16 November @4:55pm in a suburban AusPost LPO in Melbourne
Passport status recorded as below
16/11 - Wednesday submitted
25/11 - Friday Lodged
21/11 - Monday Under Assessment
23/11 - Wednesday Issued text at 9:38am
24/11 - Thursday - Received

Mum and brother had expired passports for >5 years they submitted their renewals on Monday 14 November and received theirs Friday 25 November

Oh happy to hear they shouldn't be cutting them up, its the worst feeling.

Mine expires in May so I'm hoping processing time is consistently shorter by then.
I’ve never been happy for them to cut the corners of a current passport just because you apply for a new one.

It’s been possible for you to have two active Passports - second one used to be called concurrent. You could get a second one if an application for a Visa was going to be a very long time ( and you could demonstrate active other travel), or if you needed a second passport to avoid an ‘offensive visa being spotted by another country.

6/12: Lodged renewal at regional Tas Post Office. Priority paid (I need to apply for US Visa ASAP)

12/12: E-mail from Passport office saying application finalised and passport on its way, with AusPost tracking number

15/12 Arrived rural Tas Post Office

So 4 working days for the actual passport bit.

Scrawny little thing isn't it? Not like my previous, extra-capacity one with tatty edges.

Applied for Passport renewal on Monday. Received notification today that it is on its way. Super impressed as I thought I may wait weeks/months at this time of year. It was due to expire in June.
