Pay Points to Extend Qantas Status

Some temporary changes in my travel patterns so I'm unlikely to earn enough SC to retain WP this year. Considering paying the 120k QFF points to retain instead.

Has anyone taken up this offer before? If so, were you able to 'retain' WP the following year for the standard 1200 SC? or did you need to earn 1400 SC to attain again?
you only need to meet the 1200 - this is my situation - retained it last year for the 120,000 and I will just hit 1200 this year. The "status circle" on my personal Q FF page shows me progressing to renewal at 1200. Was worth it for me for a number of reasons which I think you can find in some of my older posts in this thread.

Hugely helpful, thanks @JB expat

I suspect I will take up the offer then, the 200 SC discount on the following year makes it an easier decision.

After 10 years of WP, ( and 2 of LTG) I had a career change this year, moving to monthly travel or less rather than weekly.
My membership year ends on 31 October, so I’m wondering how far out others have been getting the 120,000 points offer?
I’ll be tempted as we have a family trip to the UK planned but not booked for 2020 - so F lounge access, F check in and upgrade priority and/or release of award seats might just make it worthwhile.

I never got an offer but I contacted them and they offered it to me - I just emailed them and said I was disappointed I didn't retain WP and they said to call and I did and they just offered it without any issues

I might have to go down this route in October 2020 :(

Do you usually have to get within a certain range of 1200 to get the offer? I'm going to be well short due to a change in job roles, but am keen to keep it for another year to assist with award bookings.

I think I was less than half way there - I can check if you like

Thanks VPS, my SC balance will probably be around that mark.

With 910 SCs and no Qantas/Jetstar segments (I am currently based in London), I called Qantas today to see if there was a way I could retain platinum for another year (my anniversary date is end-September). The operator straight away suggested that I could spend 120,000 points to secure platinum for another year; she did say that she would first need to check that I had earned enough 'points' to be eligible, though I can't be sure if she was actually referring to some sort of minimum SC earn or merely checking my QFF points balance (I suspect the latter).

In any case, I accepted the offer - the first class lounges at LHR and other platinum benefits (for example, being able to reserve front row seats in Club Europe on BA) make it worthwhile for me, particularly as I expect to be able to earn 120,000 QFF points through one or two credit card sign-up bonuses once I return to Australia.

910 SCs! QF has given the offer to flyers with tallies that are a fraction of that.

My opinion on using the points have changed. With the devaluation of points and a slowdown in my acquiring of points I think spending 120k points would be a hard sell for me right now. 50,000 maybe, but not 120,000 points.

I think 120K is pretty reasonable, as long as you'll be flying over that period. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, I've burned 120K points on less (domestic upgrades on 737, anyone?). I'm sure that would upset a few on here but given it's literally 1 of about 6 card offers annually it's not worth sweating.

I am kinda expecting to lose my platinum for the 20/21 year , I am really hoping I can have the 120,000 offer to retain for another year.
For me that is worth it

It's all about planning.Mrsdrron on her anniversary date will have exactly 1200 SCs.
On my anniversary date with BA I will have exactly 1500 TPs.
Actually by some fluke it just happened that way. :D

I've cancelled a few flights this year for one reason or another (well one reason) and am coming to the end of my FF year at the end of this month.
I have only 540SC and three squiggle flights.
QFF rang me late last week with the 120k offer.
Accepted their offer.
They now want me to aim for Platinum One

Hopefully next year is a flying one for you. I’m going to be short this year and I think hubby might be shy too so it’s a good reason to keep some points at bay as he may well get the offer but don’t think I will. Although buying points seems very easy these days. We have a 5 hour layover in HK in July and First lounge is a requirement (for me).

This was also my experience - Qantas did not pro-actively make the offer to me, but rather I rang them up. To be clear, I did not explicitly ask to exchange points for status, but rather tried to phrase my question in a way which didn't rule out a pure 'comp' (something along the lines of "is there anything that can be done to let me keep platinum for another year"). In response, the customer service rep immediately offered me the option of paying 120,000 points.

Based on my experience, and other reports up-thread, I suspect that Qantas will happily take 120,000 points of any platinum FF who is short of the re qualification requirements and bothers to ring them up.

Viewing this thread in London, one of the ads I see is for a 100,000 QFF point sign-up bonus for the The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card :)
