Perth Qantas lounge

Downstairs lounge has improved things dramatically in my experiences of PER

Perth Airport has so many issues, the lounge is the least of my worries. Firstly parking at the airport, then getting a ticket and checking baggage, then getting through security, and then finally I can get to the lounge. The lounge generally has little food and it is hard to find a seat. Once I even had a Qantas staff member come over and tell me to keep my kids quiet and if you have even been in the Perth lounge you will realise how stupid a request that was! (Also no one around us had any issues with our kids, I think she was just in a bad mood).

I have never ever had an issue with finding parking in Perth.

I cannot comment on your particular experience, but I only 'tolerate' children running rampant around the QP because if you do dare to say something to the parents they generally become extremely aggressive towards you (Who are you to say how I should look after my children etc). It is therefore best not to say anything at all, even though you would like to.

Used it a fair bit over the last month. A few observations:

1. I've heard (via people experiencing it) that Rio Tinto IO have moved a reasonable amount of their flying to Virgin so I believe that has contributed to numbers being down a bit at the early morning times.
2. Food around 4pm is minimal at best (agree with an earlier post that a J lounge would be nice for the slightly better food).
3. Yet to see a loud swearing drunk in "Tapout" gear & Tatts yet have been bothered a few times by various loud talkers on the phone. Not sure that problem can be avoided in that lounge either up or downstairs.
4. They're churning the coffees out pretty well in the mornings.

Happen to be visiting friends in KTA, one who works at Rio Tinto. She can confirm that statement.

No updates here. Has the situation in Perth improved

I can't remember the date (think it may have been 23rd July) but the Australian confirmed that QF are building another QP in Terminal 3, on the ground floor opposite where Virgin's lounge is at the moment. To facilitate the flights they will operate in that terminal soon.

I bet Rio employees are very disapointed with that.

I know of people that are extremely (QF WPPG's and WP1's) that are now stuck in row 27 for their weekly Pilbara trips that are very "Not Happy Jan!"

Well they are entitled to vote with their feet.......

Quit their job because they don't like their employer's choice of airline?

Oh yeah totally, we are nuts on here  & I'm currently going through the process of a new job now, if it's not QF, im not working for you.

I'll be in the Perth Lounge with 2 others. Last time there was 4 July so I don't think it will have changed that much. If we can get seats by the window that will be great. The view is the thing there!

Pretty much all the employees who are FIFO living in Perth and working in Karratha/Dampier/Cape Lambert now fly Virgin due to Rio going through a cost cutting exercise. At this stage the majoirty of people who live in the Eastern States fly QF as the connection times in Perth from and to Eastern States are too long and against Rio's FIFO policy that they must provide the "cheapest and most direct" route beyond Perth and the direct BNE flights are filled with Rio employees. Technically Rio can put people on Tiger and Jetstar or mix of to get to their destination from Perth/Syd/Mel/Bne (it does happen too, especially ADL based employees who fly JQ quite often)

Surprisingly it hasn't effected Qantas too much by the looks still up to 12 flights a day some days PER-KTA-PER but Virgin put an additional flight on every day I think?

Tell you what though biggest issue is EVERY Rio employee can get instant Gold with DJ so the whole bloody plane is Gold! and Lounge may as well be Rio Tinto's private lounge.

Yes there are many people who are not happy with the change to Virgin and some have changed their routings etc to stay with Qantas but some have actually said they will wait for Virgin to go East as they get plenty more upgrades and more consistent aircraft and service.

Makes my time much more pleasant in the QF lounge now especially on Tues/Wed :)

What the? It is their employer that has changed the airline of choice not the individual. Are you implying they resign?

I think the implication is pay your own (not the company) or put up and shut up.

Blunt, but with these corporate things there's usually little variance allowed; may get a bit of latitude if you're a contractor.

Makes no sense at all. The comment was strictly to do with Rio moving over to Virgin and plenty of top level QFF's weren't happy with the move as they enjoyed their status benefits. They can't change airlines as it is a predetermined policy shift in an attempt to save $. They're (RTIO employees) simply not allowed to pay their own travel so the whole "Vote with your feet" argument is nonsense.

Yes, contractor's on Rio's sites may organise their own travel so that may not be a problem but for the direct employees it's Virgin for the forseeable future.

Well, you could argue in the technical sense it's not "nonsense" as if people are that disgusted then they would have to leave (or negotiate a separate deal around company policy).

Of course, we don't expect many people to do this because that would be much cutting off one's nose to spite the face.

So by extension, the superficial "vote with your feet" argument is meant to imply, at a simple level, you put up with it and shut up. See?

Anyway, so some RTIO employees will be unhappy they can't use their QF benefits and status - obvious. It's nice b****ing material for the mess room water cooler, that's all.

I've just return from KTA trip on VA as a VA PB. This was a leisure trip to visit some friends who live there.

Observations:
* VA flights in both directions were pretty full.
* Aircraft was all Y, but two rows of J seats. Good for WP. Row three (front of Y) has oodles of leg room (tested this on the return sector).
* Food offered on this flight was much better than what I receive from QF to BME a couple of months ago.

Other than loss of status for the Rio employees, I don't really see this flight as being any worse than QF. In fact, if travelling Y it is better. All three toilets are for use by Y pax.
