Perth to Sydney on 747 in J, upstairs or downstairs?

Upstairs is fun. You can think you are on a small 737 in all J class. But there is the coughpit and crew coming back and forth. Row 1 downstairs has none of that. There's nothing in front! Only a cupboard. It's a bit wow for J-class. Anyway, both are good!

Did 1K in daylight and 5B overnight long-haul. Loved the Rockstar seat(5B) as a solo. Did upstairs on JAL economy years ago and, if you haven't experienced upstairs, I would go for it just because you might not get another chance.

Mrscove had 2A and really liked the fish dinner tonight. I had a bulkhead 23Kso I had plenty of leg room which I liked. Both seats were on the ground floor of the 747-400. The flight was quick at 3.5 hours PER-SYD.

Wondering if travelling alone whether to choose 5B or 5J or would the upper deck still be better?
Upstairs is more private, but 5B & 5J have copious amounts of space.
i have selected these a few times for my son travelling from the USA to Australia and he says they are terrific for a solo traveller.

I am +1 for downstairs in the nose - really like it, although only done upstairs once. On long haul though it often ends up with children (not that it worries me, but I know it is an issue for some people) , or at least it does on the South African route, which is mainly where I have flown it.

For our trip to Chile in January, we are upstairs in the exit row (couldn’t get 4 seats in the nose), so will have another comparison.

For short haul either is OK, but for longer flights Rows 1,2 and 3 are by far the most exclusive. Super quiet and cocoon like for overnight trips.

I've got a couple coming up. If it's the old bird and on my own I go 4A or 4K ( old first class )...done this a few times to Africa. If the newer ones and on my own I go 5J in preference to 5B ( Africa at end of month ) or if with Mrs TA then 14AC upstairs ( Honolulu in Dec ).

Lo͏v͏e upstairs in the bubble

Love upstairs exit row but also flew 1A and had 1B free on a flight to HK

This was great as they made up 1A as a bed and I had 1B to sit up in

And yes 1A on the non refurb is the best seat on the plane Syd-JNB

I did the Syd - per x per - Syd run last week on qf581 and qf582. QF581 sat in 2k old F seat -awesome views looking both sides. QF582 2A in normal a380 style J seat. Upgrading to J on this route a no brainer in flex Y as only 10,000 points for 7,800 nett points due to points earned. A zone is my preference

Taking my 8yo son Syd - Per return at the end of September, just to fly the 747, as he'll probably never get another chance with them being decommissioned in a couple of years. He's a huge Jumbo fan. Its all a big surprise for him, so he doesn't even know about it. I surreptitiously asked him where's the best place to sit on a plane. Without hesitation - "top floor". So top floor seats are now arranged.

I find upstairs is noisy not from engines but air rushing past the fuselage at 900 Km/hr

Well, I'd rather the soothing noise of the air rushing past at 900 kmh, than the not so soothing experience of silence. That would just creep me out!

but if solo upstairs 14k, is my favourite, not that you could hear me enjoy it through the deafening noise!:D

As an edit, the one thing I don't like about upper deck on a 747, is curiously the windows are much lower compared to the seating position. Find myself having to stoop to look out. Yes, I still love to look out, especially on take off/landing. But that's me

We sat in 3 flying to Santiago last year. It was definitely spacious but the cabin felt a bit weird to be honest. Each to their own of course. Very much looking forward to our return journey to SFO next year with both legs upstairs. Something else to tick off.
