Pets in the Cabin - Coming soon on Virgin Australia

so what happens if
1. there is someone with a dog next to me and I don't like it and then it does its business in its carrier and I really don't like it and nowhere to move too?
2. I vomit from the smell or get and asthma attack and need oxygen . Could easily happen to a pax.
Well yes. All ‘possibilities’. No different to being next to an infant that soils its nappy?

All of these things will have happened already in the US and Europe. Australia isn’t unique. Obviously the instances of any of these things happening has been outweighed by other factors.

What do you do when a pax sits next to you with body odour? I mean that happens frequently on flights. IF you need to vomit, there's a little bag available in every seat pocket. I'd suggest you use that. How do you deal with a baby that soils its nappy. That happens all the time.

At least the bebe’s ar-e is covered and the nappy goes elsewhere…

Not sure about dogs but cats can hold on for 12 hours easily and would guess dogs are similar.

Just like humans, no two pets are the same. Averages and claimed individual experiences don't count.

Many pets will not go the toilet on command, even if they did, not sure if VA will be proving a "pets toilet" at the airport, and thus when does your 12 hours window commence?

If the pet has been trained to signal when they want to go, will VA be allowing owners to take their pet to the on board toilet?

I guess it’s not much different to dropping off pets in crates for transport in the hold.

We’d need to know how many of those arrive with soiled crates.

I think I read its 12-24 hours.

Yeah, but pets coughping all over the carpet is a bit different to a baby doing a poo in a nappy. Plus what about if you are allergic to cat hair?

Pets aren’t permitted out of their carriers.

Service animals - guide dogs - do not need to be in a carrier.

The article above was about a service animal in the USA, which didn’t need to be in a carrier.

So no parallels with Virgin’s current proposal.

As for pet hair, the FAA (USA) has said there is pet dander carried by most passengers, and is present in the cabin regardless of a pet. So they aren’t considering it an issue.

There doesn’t seem to be an avalanche of law suits in the USA over the issue.

VA stated only some flights will carry pets. So I guess you avoid those ones.

Yes
I think this will sort itself out as a market tolerance issue
A = Pax like me avoid
B = Others + pets in cabin
C= meh

Profits A v B +C= decision by VA
Variables:
1.sufficient supply to keep everyone happy?
2. B gets cancelled and put on A 🤷‍♀️ (where do the pets go? Rhetorical Q)
3. A gets cancelled and out on B (another rhetorical Q)
4. Whole thing a brain fart with free market testing via forums like this

PS - I maintain what is O/S is irrelevent (my opinion/travelling in Australia/again my opinion only). If I want to live with cultural practices in USA/UK or ? I would live there.

Im not sure it’s anything to do with cultural practice? It’s to do with the claims that animals are going to be poo’ing uncontrollably, and aircraft are going to be routinely diverted due to pax in anaphylactic shock due to allergies.

None of which seems to have happened.

Yes
But traditional practices are part of a culture my example being dogs in pubs in UK etc
… and yes… they s-it and can be a problem for pax with allergies.
Its accepted part of what happens.

Animals on planes here will be no different

My point is the fact that because its done elsewhere is not —for me—an argument it should be here. For me..not that the impacts would be different from animals on planes.
Ditto guns in US and other examples

Australia's major domestic airports have animal relief areas already. Major airports these tend to be air-side after security screening. At regional airports it may be an outside area so need to relieve before going through security or will need to exit and re-screen if needed. At BNE domestic, its on the upper (departure gate) level near the Jetstar gates so pretty much central, to the right of the exit to the lower/arrivals level.

Its not a place you want to visit without a need to be there. The odour of animal relief is strong inside the "service animal relief area", but I am told the odour does encourage animals to join in the action.

Now using such a facility will require said pet to be removed from its carrier for relief completion.
