I have an allergy to cats and can’t be in the same room as one.
Simply if I’m going to be seated near one I won’t be flying so if I have to change airlines for now so be it

MrP has allergy to dogs. His eyes swell and he develops asthma which he doesn't have otherwise. Can't be in the same room as them, he needs to go outside to breathe. Small or large. Size is irrelevant.

based on what evidence?

There’s almost nothing to find regarding pet incidents or law suits in the USA or Europe over the carriage of small pets in containers in the cabin (the abuse of the ‘service animal’ in the USA has now stopped).

The FAA has ruled pet allergies aren’t actionable given the prevalence of pet dander outside of aircraft cabins.

those with allergies, do they currently disembark from aircraft in australia when service animals or guide dogs are on board?

Aussies seem to be making a big deal based on ‘what ifs’, which haven’t manifested elsewhere. Is there a reason we are different?

Not sure it's about the 'what ifs'

It's just unhygienic, dirty, annoying and serves no purpose.
A dog does a cough in the cage early on in the flight.......then what? The pax 10 rows away or same aisle has to put up with the stench for remaining trip to Perth, Darwin or Cairns? Yuko.

Obviously plenty will be happy with it, just few here stating, not their preference.

If an animal pops you do the same as when walking in the park, you pick it up and dispose of it. Same as a baby soilingntheir nappy now.. it gets changed.

If passengers have gone to the expense of procuring a container and paying for carriage, it’s likely they have a reasonable understanding of their pets and their limitations.

If this was an issue it would be widely reported and airlines wouldn’t allow pets to be carried this way.

Yeah open the cage to pickup the poo with a plastic bag. Then the dog takes off on his/her sole chance to be free outta the cage, running under pax feet, maybe jumping on pax lap, barking, whatever. Crew spill coffee onto someone's face, dogs runs under crew legs while pilot going to the loo and dog all of a sudden in the coughpit, oh no....whole plane chaos.

Good, fair comment. I don’t change Airlines because of a flight with a drunk on it or a smelly close passenger.

But I still wish VA hadn’t gone down this route.

Actually we've never experienced a guide or service dog onboard. It is accepted that this is an essential requirement for those in need of one. The animals are highly trained, pets? Nope. I don't assume that people take responsibility for most things these days particularly a pet.

Just because it's ok in USA doesn't mean we need to embrace it.

Everyone except you seems to agree pets in the cabin within the USA is quite rare, and many seasoned travellers have managed to escape them entirely. Maybe Americans also think it’s a bad idea to carry their beloved pet in the cabin?

What the hell does “not actionable” mean when it comes to the FAA and allergies? As above we explained the concept of dose to you so plenty of people will be fine with remnants of dander but will be quite affected by a farting dander-releasing machine under the seat next to them.

It also says to avoid airlines that carry pets which might be good advice for many here.

Around 30 flights in US, never seen a pet boarding or disembarking yet.

Saw a service (blind) dog 20+ yo on Ansett

... and I have seen several this week.
