Photography and Cameras

In the old days when you’d shoot a roll of film, pay to get it developed and end up with a bunch of rubbish.

Hardly anyone in the course used film! I’m getting old.

Nah! None of that terrible commercial rubbish development. Always self wound film from 100ft roll, self made custom developer solutions, own printing and customisation! Most commercial companies did a very poor job at developing and printing since everything was done for fastest processing with minimal use of chemicals so negatives were developed to the minimum density so very light to enable very rapid printing. Much better to do it yourself, especially in B&W, colour was more complicated with tight temperature control of solutions.

I’m impressed! You must have quite the set up and really into photography then.
So maybe it wasn’t my fault after all! ;)

Aah, yes - the days of names such as Tri-X, Kodachrome, FP4, Velvia, Acutol, Kindermann, Cibachrome...... at least if you accidentally mis-set the ASA dial when moving from colour to B&W, you had a chance to recover images if you developed the film yourself. (Way back in 70s, I set up a darkroom for the hall of residence I was confined to! -saved me driving 50 minutes to my darkroom at home to develop/print a roll of film).

I remember well being very impressed that I could push Tri-X 400 ASA film to 2400 with high intensity developers. But, having an organic chemistry lab at my disposal and specializing in Catechols and Quinones was a great help.:) I had my enlarger quietly set up in one of our instrument rooms and would juggle late nights between developing and printing and running reactions. Amusingly I found an old bottle of ID11 developer on Sunday and was nostalgic when I poured it down the sink.

Quite like this one

Our homework this week is AWB and use of filters. I missed the class so didn’t get the handouts but Gee sends an email after class. My camera has auto AWB and interesting filters. Exercises this week - a couple of them anyway.

I enjoy taking photos but I don't want to put myself into a situation of striving for the perfect photo every time-happy to be an amateur & shoot away. Also I don't think I have the knowledge to judge which photos are better but just appreciate what other people post

We have a field excursion today. To Botannic gardens that I was really keen to do. But after days of sunshine - it’s rsining. So now it’s been moved to the city streets where there is cover. Boo. Creates issues for parking now and I’m just not keen. Streets are narrow for a large group. Roadworks. Boring street shops. Nothing unique. North Terrace might have been ok but that’s all open so no go. A bit bummed.

Well that was a miserable failure yesterday. We ended up meeting at a pub on the corner of north terrace and east terrace. Rained heavily the hour or so before hand and drains in the city were flooded as council doesn’t believe in clearing drains. Parked a long way to get cheaper long term parking and straight into an ankle deep gutter of water. Not too cold at that stage but was wet. Hate umbrellas and which don’t work when trying to take photos. Found the meeting point and over an hour or so (late) a few finally gathered. I think our lecturer would have preferred celebrating the recent Yes vote and would gladly have taken happy shots too but it was too far to walk in the rain. One person arrived an hour late and we all had to wait around taking photos of basically - a verandah on East Terrace.

Finally moved off. Still raining, Trying to shield the cameras from not getting wet. One guy dropped the lecturers Lens  He was shocked but she was pretty cool about it. We have a teen age student on the course doing this as a VET course so she had to be monitored as a non adult. So we wandered around like lost sheep scaring people as we were taking photos of street scenes. Still raining and by now the wind had picked up and it was getting cold. Got abused by a homeless guy although we weren’t taking photos of him of course.

Our teenager got lost! She tends to wander off in her own world and as we hit the mall she simply disappeared. Oops. Frantic calls to her mobile went to her mothers phone and message bank. So the next hour a few of us split up looking for her. By now it was cold, we were wet through and I just got a very large coffee and drove home.

Checked my photos and they are carp. Camera fogged up in some. Blurred. Awful.

Oh, and the person who got there an hour late decided she would leave after 30 minutes.

Most of us have paid a few hundred dollars for this course. One of the participants has Tourette’s. It impacts on her with the rapid jumping and hitting the table. Which occurs multiple times in the class. It must be difficult for her. While we are getting used to sudden banging noises it is still quite disruptive as it will happen whilst trying to take photos so you jump in reaction. Also she will leave the room multiple times during a 2 hour period and eats constantly. I’m trying to be tolerant but not really succeeding. It’s challenging for everyone.

So I've resorted to using the larger camera that is more like an SLR without the exchangeable lens. Reading the manual and watching Graham Houghton's youtube stream. And feel like I am moving forwards in understanding pretty much all the basics now. Some samples from the weekend.

I do try use the thirds rule but sometimes that doesn't make for the best shot

Is this the camera you had before you bought the Lumix? Or something totally different?
Good photos.:)

I’ve got 2 lumix. The original is pretty much an SLR without the lens exchange although you can get a macro lens for it. I’d swapped that out for the smaller model and was using that in the class. But in the last couple of days I’m using the big one again. Controls are the same as being used in class so it’s actually easier.

I think I remember it - did you take it on the Hong Kong cruise? A great camera but pretty big in comparison to your other one.

Yes. Probably. I try to blend into the tourist background but this puts me out there a tad. I need to get one of those camera vesty things with a lens or other camera doodad thingy in every pocket

And that would be a terribly good look - especially if you wore the vest over a formal gown while cruising :p
