Physical currency exchange

A bit belated but for anyone still reading this Unimoni have gone bust and are out of business.

Really? Their website is still live and I couldn't find any news about this.

I could be missing something but are you sure it's not some individual branches that have closed down?

Yes I know I was a bit surprised as everything looked "normal". But no there has been an administrator assigned since August initially with one option of trading out of insolvency but they clearly found that wasn't an option.

Maybe OT however is Canada or the US better for exchanging physical currency and is it best done in the banks or money traders I have just forgotten. As I (we) have not travelled internationally in the past 2 years we have a sock pile of currency mainly NZD, SGD, HKD, YEN and the less used ones IDR, MYR and RMB. My next planned trip will be to the US and CA and am looking to exchange all back to USD with the exception of YEN, at the best FX and minimum fees. Happy for any suggestions.

I still have my currency and did find a local travelex which is open and manned by a real human whom I have called and will attend when time permits!! There are a few left in Vic — but as my upstream posts advise call first. I want to offload sterling as got caught last trip as there had been a change in notes used and only banks accepted the older ones

Edited to add: live websites mean nothing re:unimoni post. Many closed travelex sites still appear on the website. I suppose ani ternatiinal company with closed stamp over 2/3 of the stores not great PR

Just checking but it seems like the only options at the moment are Travelex and the Post Office with the Post Office's rates being slightly better. Any other thoughts on that?

Bugger not again...had the drama with 5 pound notes back in 2018...
Trying to find a bank to cash them is a PITA as a tourist.

I'm still getting paper $5 notes sometimes in Australia...

Even the banks refuse to exchange
I have now found and spoke w Geelong Travelex and she was (a) there (b) human and (c) helpful ++
As I’ll be doing hols on coast will swing by
So Linda - gold star to you
Okay Mod
I am taking licence and providing an update on this thread and awarding the inaugural LINDA award for outstanding service to the travel industry.
I posted the above thread two months ago.
I rang the Geelong Travelex today and it was obviously busy. Within a minute I got a call back from Linda saying sorry she could not get to the phone. I explained I was ready to exchange my euros/pounds etc - yes I remember you. She advised she was sorry i did not get to use them on planned trips/but would give me lots of $$$ to have a nice shop and pamper myself.
What a ⭐🏅
Linda - there is a job for you at QF in customer service!…. What am I saying they made that dept redundant years ago….

Forgot to update...
I cashed mine in...the first place (my usual due to good rates) only took the newer crispy paper notes and that was after getting the manager involved. I got rid of the few leftover daggy notes at a standard shopping mall exchange but got about 5c less.

Still it saves me headaches next time I get to London.

Seems like a lot of currency exchanges have gone in Perth. I recently went to Red Rate Currency Exchange which had acceptable rates, and good opening hours, so worth a look if people are desperate

Fortunately we are in the UK in September for 3 weeks. Looks like a lot of cash being spent.

Over the last couple of weeks in the UK, I hardly used any cash - in fact many places had gone cashless. Which explains why I still have 2 x old £20 notes! Totally forgot about that. Fortunately, I’m back in the UK in a couple days.

Anyone have any recent success with physical exchange in Sydney, preferably north shore (I'm lower north) or the city? I came across an envelope of USD that I'd put in a place for safe-keeping when the $A was in the mid 80c range, and then forgot about it! FX rate now is good for an exchange, but rather not take too big of a haircut on it.

Cheers,
Matt.

I'm in the lower North Shore and am looking for USD esp newer notes and smaller denominations, for tips etc when I go to Africa later this year..how much USD do you have?. .happy to meet up and exchange to AUD at xe.com rate. PM if interested :)

Interesting option! It’s a fair chunk of change, and I’d want to do it all at once rather than need to take the balance and sort that out separately… I’ll ping you and you let me know 🤓

Cheers,
Matt.
