It also seems to be at ≥ 50” the prices start to skyrocket.
I have to agree here. Up until approx 2 years ago I would have agreed with the comments from localknowledge (post #25 & 26) but not any more. The newer generation LCD's have surpassed the Plasma up to about 50in and that size is gradually getting bigger. These posts generally indicate that currently < 50" LCD is a better option and ≥ 50" Plasma is better.
Of course, this may be moot in the future with the probable demise of Plasma.
Big warning on my memory here. But I recall reading something about the decay of brightness in plasma and I think it was something like 50% of the brightness will be gone in 5 to 7 years. That it is an exponential decay tye curve. This is basically because every time you apply electricity to the plasma it gets used up. I'm sure you'd get 20 years but it'd being interesting to see what the picture quality is like.I am sure my plasma (Pioneer 50") will last at least 10 years. Purchased it 2.5 years ago, at the time it was double other tv's but the quality won over the price.
People these days are just taking to new technology faster.

Yesterday, I bought an AWA 47" LCD at Big W for $1296 - It has a 3 year warranty and is found on the front page of this week's catalogue (ends tomorrow). Whatever you get, you'll love it! Makes a huge difference.
Me too! Got my LCD at Big W Kawana.
Well just back from taking the plunge.Went with Samsung-LED/LCD.55 inch.5 years warranty. At the Hardly Normal 20% off sale this weekend.
Yes it is a 139cm model.Comes with a free 26 inch LCD as well.A little more than we were looking at but it did seem clearer than most and does have a 6 star efficiency rating.Even at the (quoted on the website) 40% off, that would have been well out of our price range. Looks really good though. Seems to be a typo on the website labelling it as 116CM or 55” though

Well I am impressed.Great picture quality.Spent the morning watching the NFL-looked great.
Also amazed by the ease of setting it up.Plug in the aerial, turn on the power and press OK for auto programming.Voila.So much for some retailers trying to push you to get someone to set it up for you-neither Hardly Normal or Joycie did though.
At the Hardly Normal sale on the weekend though it was $4000($3999.91 if you want to be pedantic). And it came with a 26 inch LCD,plus $100 off the extended warranty. No set of steak knives though.:shock:But because I used my DC that will be with 3700 AA miles.List price x 60% or 80%
Samsung (55") 116cm LED LCD Television - TV, Audio & Gaming - Products

I'm still not going to buy one though.
Unfortunately you have to wait 4-6 weeks for the second. It is a LCD(large is LED)so probably wont be quite as good but looked perfectly reasonable in store and has an RRP of $998-though buying it straight last WE was ~$650.What is the small TV like? As good as the big one?
The kids have noticed that ABC3 starts in 3 days. I was considering upgrading them from kinda small CRT to a bigger LCD. But not quite ready, so I either get a cheap set top box to fill the gap or just bite the bullet and get them a new TV.
