Thats a good deal drron, I was looking at these recently and I noticed yesterday they are listed at $4699 in the current good guys catalogue, with the bonus deal. They look and perform great, you will forget you spent more than you wanted to fairly quickly once they are up and running

Is there anyone still using conventional TV screens and has not upgraded to Plasma, LCD or what? I have a 51cm NEC TV that is over 10 years old and still does a great job.

The obvious question would have to be why invest all that money on new technology on something that is not used that often and does not really make that much difference?

We have a 11 yo 81cm WS DEC CRT TV that is still our main TV. This is connected to:
  • A SD set top box
  • An AV receiver
  • A Playstation
  • A VCR
  • A DVD player
  • External TV Antenna

Earlier this year we puchased a 68cm Sanyo WS LCD with inbuilt HD decoder which serves as the second TV. This is connected to:
  • A 400 Gbyte Hard Drive/DVD recorder
  • A VCR
  • External TV Antenna
  • Foxtel Decoder

The Foxtel box is connected to the 26" TV, the 400Gbyte hard drive/DVD recorder and two AV transmitters

Also I have a 48cm WS LCD in my bedroom, it has an inbuilt SD decoder and is connected to an AV receiver.

My ambition is to replace the 81cm Tube TV ith a 101+cm LCD for < $1k ... the prices are getting close (in fact some are already there, but I don't like the brands.).

I was until yesterday, but after reading about the 55" LED I had to take a look for myself.

I didn't buy the LED, for the amount I'd use to I couldnt justify 4.5k on something that will likely be down to 2.5k next year, instead I picked up a 50" Panasonic G10 Plasma.

I noticed JB's put it out for $1941 where it was 2.5k last week (and 3.5k when the model was launched in April) and when another retailer offered to undercut it on the spot I couldn't say no.
(BTW, not that i'd ever buy from them because their staff are atrocious, but HN still had it ticketed at 2.8k)

Given I don't smoke, am not a big drinker and enjoy entertaining friends at home, spending under 2k on something that's going to bring me joy (i'm a big movie lover) is money well spent.

By the way, the LED was beautiful, nice buy Drron...thanks for prompting me to move into the 21st Century.

About 3 years ago I decided I was not happy with the expected life of Plasma (brightness fading over years of use and burn-in) or the speed and viewing angle of LCD. So I opted for a 36" High Definition (1080P) wide-screen CRT. It weighs more than me and cost more than LCD or Plasma of similar size at the time.

The picture quality when viewed side-by-side with LCD at the time was noticeably superior, and I have more confidence in the technology delivering the same picture quality for many more years.

I do have a smaller LCD TV (22") that came as a "bonus gift" when we bought a fridge. Its good for the bedroom, but real CRT while not huge provide excellent picture quality.

At the time there were only 2 manufacturers of large format high-definition wide-screen CRT TVs in the Australian market - Sony and Toshiba.

But if I was buying a new TV today I would be more likely to go down a similar path as drron.

I was until a few months back and we moved to LCD. Had about 80 cm CRT, but the v-hold went, and I wasn't sure if it was possible to have it repaired.

It seems that for us TV/movie viewing is part of our life. Unlike perhaps someone with a 51cm TV. But more power to you for still being with CRT.

I am always a few years behind most people. I have been addicted to cathode rays for many years now. It seems that the best use of my TV right now is not actually watching anything but playing DVD's via the $65 Sanyo DVD player which is hooked up to the NEC 51cm TV....

I believe that Plasma is far more better now than before. Absolutely, much reliable compared to any other stuff we have in appliance stores.

Plama is certainly generally less expensive that comparable sizef LCD screens these days. ISTR this contrasts the situation in 2007/2008.

The reality is the Plasmas are on the way out ...

Well we now have our 26" LCD that was free with our purchase.Great picture and finally something to watch when mrsdrron has the controller.;)
