Platinum AMEX Renewal during covid-19

I have to be honest, Amex offers have been rubbish to me(other than the Woolworths $400). My personal experience is you really have to be in the right place at the right time. But, I'd be doing what you were doing, pushing for a retention offer for the inconvenience of not having "offers" 😂 . Good luck!

As a separate data point, for AFFers thinking of cancelling their Plat card, it may be worthwhile considering whether you hold on to your Plat Reserve card as a stand-alone card, as a) it means you don't need to forcibly transfer out your AMEX points

I'm keen on this approach. Seems paying for $395 to keep the Platinum Reserve Credit Card standalone and then reapply for the Plat Charge when travel comes back would allow me to keep all the reward points active with the same redemption rate. The Reserve Credit Card gives up to 4 supplementary cards for free as well.

Has anyone else done this?

I was actually going to do this but changed my mind at last minute because I would actually pay for AFR subscription myself ($628), so I figure for $400 extra, I'm going to keep the card. However I think it feels like a good approach.

but I'm mostly frustrated that they took away offers for 6 months (I didn't hear that from them initially, only checked the Amex offers thread by chance).

Do you have any missed or late payments with Amex from the last 18 months? Has your account otherwise been in good standing?

They wouldn't give me a concrete answer for decreasing the charge limit ....
Was this the Manila Call Centre? If Manila picks up the call, you can always ask to be put through to Australia (I seem to recall that they are based in Sydney, 9.00am to 5.00pm, M-F, EST, or thereabouts). I was told this by the Australian Call Centre a couple of years back. This was in relation to a platinum Charge card matters.

I always found Manila to be rather difficult. Polite, but scripted in responses.

A friend had his annual fee due. He call two weeks ago to see what was on offer. Big fat nothing. Over the weekend he called to cancel. They offered him 30k points. He still cancelled. Don't know if the points were offered due to a different point in time or because they knew he was serious.

200000 points is more normal which actually should cover annual fee. Obviously he need to spend more.:)

@Daver6 @Bell21 @PSS @notblondeman @Ace3162 and anyone else that has renewed with or without a bonus points offer. If you guys don't mind sharing an approximate or arbitrary small (<100k) / medium / large (>500k) MR balance at time of call? Just testing a theory that it may be a factor... I rang up yesterday and also got the 'change to gold/green' offer. I've got a medium balance.

I called two months ago ahead of my renewal, spoke to the AU platinum charge team and got the "downgrade to green/gold" treatment. MR points balance is well into 7 figures, and spend probably averages $10k/month. Account in good standing, think I was maybe late on a payment by 3-4 days once in the last 5 years.

Think I'm gonna try again given some of the offers other members are getting to not cancel.

I didn't even think green or gold were options in Australia anymore, they aren't on their website. Guess they must have kept them around as a fallback option.

Mine was in the large category.

I tried to ask for a retention offer, but that didn't work out, so I thought at the very minimum would be offers reinstated, but turns out it's out of their control apparently, so I'm cancelling the card since I have no plans to give amex 1450$ for essentially no reason (imagine if there's another 400$ offer and I'm not eligble ;) )

No plans to downgrade to green/gold card (it's similar ppd earn to a 0 annual fee card). Bpaying the balance left now, and asking them to cancel the annual fee in a few days.

Absolutely agree. Cancel, start your 18month exclusion, reapply when the world is turning. There have been many reports the platinum charge card technically has the 18 month exclusion, but members have still received sign-on bonus points once they reach the spend requirement when they were under 18 months.

I can confirm that I also got the similar response from Manila call centre. I was not offered any points whatsoever and they were ready to close the account. I have one more week due before my annual fee hits the account.

About the points , I was in the small category with around 85K points.

I think they are "legacy" cards. No new ones issued, but retained for existing card holders?
I have no idea what are the benefits of a gold or green charge cards, as they are not publicised.
But I guess the annual fee is much less than the platinum charge card.
And a few AFF members have said the gold has a platinum credit card (Edge?) attached.

I still have my gold but get Edge as ‘free’ companion. Have kept it for sentimental reasons and as it’s annual fee < Edge’s so I get the Edge for the price of Gold.

Interesting - when it was suggested I downgrade to the Gold, the fee was definitely more than $195 (can't remember what was quoted). To make it even less attractive, I was told there would be an additional cardholder fee for each additional card! By which stage it would cost more than he $395 for the platinum reserve so it was an easy 'no'. The agent actually also mentioned sentimental reasons behind getting a gold.
