Please, no food or drink while using the desktops in the Qantas Lounge

*Now at work, I normally eat lunch (usually a bread roll or similar) at my desk whilst browsing certain flying-related websites , resulting in a weekly 'turn the keyboard upside down and bang several times on desk' routine, which results in a mix of bread crumbs, sesame seeds and poppy seeds being expelled from the recesses of the keyboard! They're quite resilient, those keyboards!

Keyboard spice!

I'm too paranoid to use a public terminal unless I absolutely have to for some reason - I mostly just use my laptop instead. If I spill food or drink, it's therefore entirely my problem to deal with. :p

I normally turn the keyboard upside down at work and bang it on the desk. Most people around me look at me funny wondering what the hell I am doing. As I hardly eat at my desk the main things that come out of the keyboard are small bits of hair, more than likely eyebows and dandruff.

I’ve pulled the keys off my keyboard a few times to clean it all, but not recently

I don't mind such a rule on public computers.

Much better than a group filthy or out-of-order computers.

I think this is pretty ridiculous - I eat and drink in front on my computer at home and at work and don't have a food/drink stained desktop. I shouldn't be restricted due to someone elses limitations.

The only keyboard incident I have had as midflight watching TV on the laptop, eating dinner and drinking a glass of white during turbulence... it didnt end well...

What you do to your own keyboard is your business, but I think it is perfectly reasonable for Qantas to protect their equipment and the ability of everyone to use them. Your example perfectly illustrates this.

Bit patronising. I certainly haven't seen any such signs in either the Mel or Syd F lounges.

Now is that because they think F lounge users are a better class of person less likely to make a spill? Or do they assume that it's worth replacing a keyboard in the event of an accident?
Definitely because F loungers are a better class of person :!:   :p

Why is it perfectly reasonable for Qantas to disadvantage me, and the vast majority of Qantas Lounge users, because of a few clowns who cannot control themselves? Very disappointing to label all people the same....

What example? The one referencing my desktop that has no stains or problems (this being comparable to the situation in the QP) or the example midflight during turbulence? I don't recall much turbulence in the QP...

I'm eating a ham and cheese toastie (at home) as I type this. Surprisingly, after lots of trial and error, I've found biting over the plate instead of over the keyboard reduces crumbs on the keyboard!

I don't recall ever eating at the computers in the QP as my inner germophobe doesn't trust my fingers touching public keyboards and then food, but am certainly guilty of having some sort of beverage while using the computers.

Unless Qantas is actually having a problem with the computers being damaged with this (which I doubt), it just seems a stealth way of reducing the time people spend at the computers by stopping "picnicking". Which is a good goal, but doesn't take account of the many people who may only spend 10 -15 mins in there and want to quickly grab a coffee, beer, etc while checking emails or whatever.

They should install those Foldable rubber keyboards.
Not only are they easy to keep clean/waterproof, they are quiet when you type.

Problem solved QP! :D

Those foldable keyboards are resistant but are practically inefficient, i.e. you really need to push hard down on keys for the to work - that's hell for anyone who can touch type.

While we're thinking about it, people sneeze all over the place in QPs, including keyboards, the buffet, tables, etc. I'm starting to think if we're going to insist people do not eat or drink near computers, what should we do about our sick (read in many senses of the word) patrons.... Certainly, who would like to use a computer that someone has just witnessed another sneezing like mad all over the keyboard, the screen, used their hand to wipe their nose then back onto the mouse.........

Yeah I see what you mean, but it really does depend on what brand/quality of one you buy.
There are some really coughpy ones out there.
The one I have previously used (wish I could remember the Brand) had big box like keys and was very easy to type with compared with some types that had softer/flatter/smaller keys.

Think I've covered keyboard stories on the forum before. I keep a container of Cyber Clean both at home and work to keep the keys clean - as I find nothing grosser than a dirty, scum filled keyboard laden with crumbs, skin cells and hair.

One of my pet hates used to be people who would take the newspaper, beverage and food to one of the computer desks so that they could read the paper and eat, with no intention of using the computer. To me this was selfish and ignorant.

Re the keyboard, I have read that most office keyboards have significantly higher bacteria levels than a toilet seat.

Having been in PER, SYD, TSV and BNE QPs in the past week I can say I've only seen this sign in BNE. Not certain about SYD though. Looks like the local manager (Wendy something) has taken it upon herself to be the iron fist of "Qantas requirements". It didn't seem to stop anyone much but I did hear one of the dragons chip someone at one stage. I ate my breakfast there this morning but without placing my bowl on the table (i.e. sitting back). Wouldn't want to get into trouble!

Sorry about that, it was just a particularly bad dose of BirdFlu at the time and I thought no one was watching. I did empty the bucket on the floor beside me though:rolleyes:

Interesting that no signs in the BNE Business Lounge.

Does this mean that the people in this lounge are a better class of person? Or are the signs in the BNE Qantas Lounge there in preparation for the Flyertalk AGM next week. ;)

* Posted with 2 beers on my left hand side after I had some food and a beer earlier....

I was just thinking that myself :!:
